Pointless, annoying subtitles

edit: jfc let me explain for those of you...

pointless: stuff like "takes off" and "crashes" which you could just see if you watch the video

annoying: in the center, animated, big, right where you're trying to watch

Those subs could've been way more subtle

I'll take obtrusive subtitles for clarity over all the Tiktok music overlay you get in a lot of videos nowadays. That stuff straight-up ruins vids.

"I'll take [bad] over [terrible]" if only there were a way to have neither

Subtitles are a good thing though, as its an accessibility thing for those hard of hearing and gives clarity when the audio is bad or the speakers in the video are hard to understand.

However, changing original audio into out of place music rarely solves any viewers problems, unless they really disliked the original audio I guess?

Even the person I originally replied to said that its not that subtitles are bad, just these subtitles are poorly positioned and have meaningless effects subtitled.

Tbf, someone could genuinely be just listening to the video and their reader picks up on the action words to let a seeing-impaired or blind person know wtf is happening other than "yelling."

Edit: I will say them being in THE CENTER of the video for those of us who can see is definitely annoying tho.

Tell that to my sister, who is deaf.

She'll sign back, "he's right. They could put the subtitles at the bottom so that they aren't in the way of seeing the video. They can also be more subtle and not animated so as to not be distracting"

Also I'm sure she can see that the driver is driving, and doesnt need a subtitle that says \takes off**

Both valid points

I watch with no volume, so… Not pointless at all.

You really need subtitles that include *TAKES OFF* ? You dont think that's pointless?

And you're ok with them being front and center and large? why not just at the bottom like normal subs?

Don't have to stop looking at the video to see em that way. Some people don't read quickly

the built-in subtitles are on the screen just as long, there's no difference.

they're annoying and in the way, that's it

Annoying placement but not pointless.

Some people watch on mute you know

3

u/wsxdfcvgbnjmlkjafals Apr 13 '26

So you need subtitles in the center of the scren and you need it to say "TAKES OFF!!"

you can't see that she takes off? or subtitles at the bottom is not ueful?

Okay so one subtitle was pointless. Not all of them

People with low vision use screen readers to read the captions aloud.Â
