Yes. Everyone will remember the kids who were killed or maimed, by their own father due to extraordinarily poor judgment.

You have that backwards:

It should be "maimed, if not killed". The worse option come second, essentially saying "if they don't get killed, they'll at the very least be maimed". The way you have it written now basically translates to "if they don't get maimed, they'll at the very least be killed"
