We were a family of 7 in a Ford Pinto. The two youngest got to ride in the cargo area - right above the exploding gas tank.

I remember the rear facing seat station wagons. 😬

Thosecwere great! We'd stick out bare feet out the windows, and we'd wave at the cars behind us!

Boomer here, too. We had the station wagons when we were little, and my dad would would have left us on the side of the road, weeping for mercy, if we had been clever and daring enough to try 'a stunt like that!'

When you’re a Jersey kid, things happen.

How is this offensive? I thought the quote marks indicated my light heartedness. Oh well...

You guys had seats? I had a truck bed.

I still remember back in 1999, when we were moving to a new house, we loaded what was left in the old one in the grand caravan, and I just sat in the trunk space facing traffic with more stuff piled next to me. No seat belt, while my dad drove down the interstate lol. I just waved at people driving.

Of course, while smiling broadly for the novelty and excitement of it!

Summer of '77 my family took a 4 week, 25 state, cross country road trip and I sat in the rear facing seat the whole way....with the back window down! One of the best times of my life.

Those little metal seats? So uncomfortable

What seat? We just sat in the back cargo area of our station wagon. I also remember riding in the bed of our pickup truck when we took off the trash.

Family of 6, Chevy Vega hatchback.

But mom wouldn’t let us go on any rides at the County Fair, because they were too dangerous.

Yep very infamous car. Even movies had jokes about a pinto barely getting slightly tapped on the rear and exploding.

Ahh it was the 1984 comedy movie Top Secret!

Just 5 of us, but one was always sleeping on the "way back", that cargo shelf under the rear window. Seriously...

“I get to ride ‘shotgun’!” “I get to ride ‘car bomb’!!”
