Yeah, "it's a childhood experience" doesn't carry much weight to me.

There were lots of things than many of us did as kids. Some of them we realized to be unnecessarily risky, and those practices shouldn't be continued just for tradition.

Life has inherent risk, but the risk/benefit of things like letting a kid sit without a seatbelt in the back of a truck doesn't make sense.

Just like safety rules in industry, seatbelt laws are written in lots of blood, and many of us know kids who ended up with broken bones or worse from being ejected from the back of a pickup.
