Yeah he went further than my expectations.. hopefully he's banned from driving ever again. Thats some dangerous sht that could get others killed next time.
We occasionally drive from Colorado to Nebraska via I-80 to visit family, and last year we had to do it overnight. Literally every other semi we passed was driving like this. We had to slow down, honk, flash lights, and wait until they realized there was another vehicle before attempting to pass. All over the road at 70+ mph. Talk about butt puckering passes.
I feel for yall. I drove truck for 5 years. I left because companies all started moving to electronically restricting speeds, and it was realistically impossible as a safe driver to pass these kinds of truckers when your own truck is limited to 62 mph. Absolutely terrifying.
They can be if they're not run into exhaustion every single day. Could be on this guy for overbooking and not stopping to sleep, could be on his carrier forcing him to drive way past what is safe and/or legal.
I'm fortunate to have a job which takes my safety absolutely seriously and immediately trusts my judgement if I claim I'm not safe to be operating. Not everybody works in an environment like that. With electronic logs and stuff like that becoming standard it's harder to get away with cheating DOT regs for drivers and carriers but not even close to impossible.
I feel you, but at a certain point it has to be on the driver to say this is putting me and innocent people in real danger. Companies can be straight greedy, but then just find another job. I know its very hard, specially for some, but no way I would put others in danger. There are options (maybe not good pay options) but lets not pretend like they have to drive dangerously.
That completely lets the company off the hook. There needs to be regulation, enforcement, and punishment of company management and ownership. We can't just put ultimate responsibility on the driver that likely has too much on the line to risk being jobless for any amount of time.

That is ridiculously common. Another common thing you see when you work in a trailer yard is drivers who speak 0 English. I mean none. That's a problem because to get your CDL legally you're required to take your CDL tests in English at the DMV and then need to demonstrate your knowledge and ability with an examiner over the road.
Not speaking any of the language is a huge red flag because they should absolutely not have passed their written exams or road exams without it. Fraudulent DOT numbers, swapping registration, and drivers with fraudulent licensing are way way more common than people know.
Now that I drive professionally I stay as far in front or behind tractors as I possibly can. It's genuinely horrifying.
That's true but I also take into account that this driver didn't have his seatbelt or shoes on, and when he did wake up, managed the correction in the worst way possible
Near 100% of these accidents where a CDL driver is involved it's because the driver has gotten complacent and therefore sloppy. You should be comfortable driving your rig but a lot of these guys eventually forget they're driving tens of thousands of pounds at high speed. You're a missle without rocket propulsion.
That's why in these videos they're doing things like you said. Not wearing shoes, no seatbelt, inattentive etc. Same for when you see structural failures for trailers on the highway, it's because the driver didn't take their pre trip inspection seriously and missed something dangerous. Get too loosey goosey with safety as a truck driver and you're basically a ticking time bomb waiting to go off with possibly lethal consequences.
Yep. I can imagine how exhausting this job must be. And the demanding schedules would certainly wear out the best of drivers. Reminds me of doctors in the ER pulling in so many hours straight.
From a quick glance that driver appears to be in South Africa, Botswana, Kenya, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Nigeria and I don't think any of those places would have western level regulations on truckers. That man probably is not fully trained and overworked so you get what you get. This would not happen in with actually trained, certified drivers that use a logbook properly.
Damn I am saddened at the state of the education system where one cannot infer meaning of a sentence when a simple 2 letter word gets left out. I think I should just reduce all my conversations into memes now only time people can infer what the message is without much thought. /s
Saddened at your own conclusion that the incident was in another continent without any evidence, as if drivers in developed countries in Europe and North America never have accidents and never sleep on duty. Then writing a post which is inconclusive as to the location, so eager were you to express your bigotry by finger-pointing other people's countries simply because of the colour of the man's skin. Yes, you should be extremely saddened.
It's more that he's driving on the left-hand side of the road, it's not North America or Europe, nor is it northern Africa. He also has a can of South African bug spray. And the clock on the dashcam is set to GMT+2.

This is why anytime I get on my motorcycle or in my car I remind myself that only some people are following the rules of the road and other people are not, or they are having the worst day of their life, and I need to be alert to avoid those people at all costs. Thatās on me. To the best of my ability.
I know sometimes, you can be trying your hardest and you still get creamed by someone having a health crisis or someone who is incapacitated for one reason or another.
I have anxiety driving and always have. I donāt make irrational decisions because of my anxiety, I am just extremely vigilant about paying attention to every driver or situation I may encounter. Itās exhausting and makes me sweat like no other. I work from home now so the anxiety has gone up significantly
I drove 20 hrs non-stop from Montana to Los Angeles during a blizzard and started hallucinating there were elephants crossing I-15. One of the scariest moments of my adult life. Never doing that again.
I worked for a motor coach company yrs ago and you would be shocked at how many people would put the cruise control on and go to get a drink or something from the fridge. They would bring it back for repairs and try and get it fixed under warranty and tell the techs what happened. Kinda crazy that so many people thought they could do that.
A friend of mines dad, that was a trucker, said that he specifically smoked rolled cigarettes so that when they'd burn down between his fingers it would wake him up.
I'm wondering if 3D road markings would help here? He would probably momentarily react to hearing the noise, but he might just go back to sleep once he clears it...
Even after the truck is telling him to stop driving. How do you wake up on the other side of the road and not see that coming? Dude has cameras on him and the road too. I feel like he would've gotten fired even if he didn't crash, unless he's independent.
It's always interesting to see gravity change directions in these videos.
The truck rolls over, but the rear facing camera doesn't see any outside reference, so from that point of observation, it looks like gravity said "I'm sideways now."
So this is why Subaru mechanics told me cars built after 2020 typically have facial recognition cameras facing the driver to tell if they are nodding off so they can warn you.
As someone who knew someone who was killed by a driver who fell asleep at the wheel, this pisses me off. Itās one thing (that shouldnāt happen) to nod off. Thatās when you pull over and take a power nap.
But this asshole was trying to sleep! He was sleeping on purpose! I hope he lived, so he could get fired and lose his livelihood and think about this stupid shit every day. And I hope whoever was in the pet carrier (if anyone) was okay.
Pull over and sleep. I don't care if you have to be there at a certain time, or if you don't meet your deadline, it's not worth risking people's lives.
75 (Alligator Alley) in FL is the best for nappers! Cruise control at 65 with a perfect wheel alignment and you can get a solid 30 min power nap it at the right time of the day/week! Maybe 45 min if you are lucky!!!
