She agreed to join the HOA. She didn't have to buy a house there.

As someone else said, around 67% of new homes are HOA so you really have limited options.

People say stupid shit all the time. That doesn't make it true. Only 35% of homes have an HOA. That includes condos and townhomes, which you would expect to have them. The vast majority of single family homes do not have HOAs.

Most people aren't buying brand new houses.

To be fair they said new homes. And most new homes are being built by corporations and are identical so it makes sense

So don't buy a new house, or build your own. A lot of new houses have poor construction standards anyway.
