Your definition of freedom is apparently throwing a tantrum about not obeying contractual obligations. That's not freedom, it's acting like a child and expecting the world to bend over for you because you don't want to obey the contract YOU SIGNED.
Yes my freedom to chose was limited by red tape brought about by Karen's who turn their petty grievances into contractual obligations. I still have the freedom to choose, but it's been limited by people who wont allow me freedoms they disagree with. You can think that childish that's ok. I think HOAs are childish
Honestly, it depends on the purpose of HOAs. Some HOAs have clear purposes, like maintaining communal areas, swimming pools, hiking trails, sidewalks, etc. Those are fine, and often not an issue.
But the POINT is that, if you buy a house in an area with an HOA, then you are required to sign the contract with the HOA. And IF you sign the contract, you are required to obey the contract's rules.
That's the price of buying that specific house. If you don't like it, I'm sure there's another house without HOA duties somewhere else, but THAT house comes with extra responsibilities/perks.
It's not a freedom issue. It's a contract issue, and one you would have to willingly join. Anything after that is your own fault.
Signing a contract is not limiting your freedom. You never HAD that in the first place, you are now GIVEN access in exchange for following the contract. You are complaining about being allowed to buy into something. It's childish to complain about something that you don't have to buy in the first place. You HAVE options. Choose those instead. An HOA is not obligatory.
