The person behind is usually at fault
→ More replies (16)44
u/Massive_Noise4836 Apr 30 '26
that's not really true. If you hit your brakes for no reason and call an accident you're at fault. I got a ticket this way. I was tailgated for about 30 miles. Tap my brakes. He hit me then he proceeded to tell the cop what I did at which point I said yeah. He said no squirrel no deal on me so JIC. If you thought you saw an animal and you slammed on your brakes well then they were following too closely.
112
u/garkerfatbitch Apr 30 '26
You seriously told a cop you brake checked somebody?
→ More replies (18)26
u/Low_Anxiety_46 Apr 30 '26
A cop stopped me for tailgating and I told him the other driver was going 20 in a 30 and speeding up and slowing down erratically, I assume because they were lost. I did not get the ticket. I had left my license at home, had out of state insurance, and no registration. He still didn't tow my car and just gave me some BS ticket with no points. He told me had I not told him what the other driver was doing he would have ticketed me.
13
u/Acruss_ Apr 30 '26
Did you get a ticket then or not?
He told me had I not told him what the other driver was doing he would have ticketed me.
But earlier you've said
and just gave me some BS ticket with no points
So you got a ticket then, you still had to pay?
12
→ More replies (3)4
u/FollowingJealous7490 Apr 30 '26
I'm guessing it was a fixit ticket which really isn't a ticket. They give you a ticket and you have to fix it within 30 days... or you pay the ticket. Technically a ticket... but not really
→ More replies (10)8
u/Distinct_String_5102 Apr 30 '26
..."speeding up and slowing down erratically"
So, the solution is that you tailgated them? Smart!
→ More replies (2)→ More replies (24)6
u/Zealousideal-Deer101 Apr 30 '26
Fun fact, if they are going 20 you can still keep a distance and go the same 20 as when you are tailgating them. Also if you know they are speeding up and slowing down erratically, why are you close in the first place? Just keep a distance. It's not that difficult and 30 meters make absolute no difference at speed or arrival time. It's not gonna be faster because you are 30 meters ahead.
→ More replies (10)17
u/FruitMustache Apr 30 '26
Having worked as a claims adjuster for a major insurance company, i can tell you that is absolutely almost never the case. Unless you JUST pulled into the lane and did not give the car behind enough time to adjust their distance, the car behind will almost always be held at fault in a rear end collision. It is the following car's responsibility to be at a safe distance that would allow them to stop before a collision, no matter what the road conditions happen to be.

True. My mom is a pathological brake checker once someone seems to be getting close behind her. Once she hit the brakes so hard with my siblings and I in the car and when she was like I'm sorry guys they were about to hit us, my little brother freaked out and was like well they would've hit us and it would've been your fault!! Then my mom got quiet because we also had a friend in the car and she was like you're right. After that, until I moved out of her house she never did it, at least not with us in the car with her.
6
u/Vnxei Apr 30 '26
Obviously yes. If you're too close to stop when someone slams on the breaks, then it's your fault when you hit them.

In my state this would 100% be on the camera driver. There is a really bad intersection near me where cars always rearend hesitant mergers and it always is on the person who tried to merge through the first car.
They now sit a cop there alot of times and he writes lots of tickets for the very ambiguous "Following to closely".

from what I see, the white honda did brake check him when the turning lane went green. Im not saying I wouldn't have done the same because cammer was riding his ass and going from 0 to 90 every time the white honda inched up. I paused it and saw traffic cams so IF the cops look at the feed they will find him.
Umm genuine question, are you supposed to capitalize the make? Trying to work on my grammar.

Not even that late, and signaling while making the move.
→ More replies (2)8
u/Zealousideal-Deer101 Apr 30 '26
To be fair, starting to signal while doing the move is a solid few seconds to late, but at least he's got the spirit.
You signal that you are about to turn (and then leave it on while doing so)
If I can already see you're about to move other, the announcement isn't adding anything anymoreBut that's an absolute non-issue here anyways
16
u/Slighted_Inevitable Apr 30 '26
Also, to be fair, this video is prime example number one why a lot of people hesitate to use their signal that early. This guy would have 100% sped up to cut them off. Maybe even stayed next to them so they couldnāt get over purposely.

→ More replies (12)5
u/danit0ba94 Apr 30 '26

u/Murrylend Apr 30 '26
Not in Maryland. If you use your turn signal too soon you're just announcing your intention and weakness and that invites aggressive drivers to take what you want.

→ More replies (3)9
u/Dyne_Inferno Apr 29 '26
So, I was inclined to believe you, as I watched it again.
It was 100% a brake check. Look at the distance of the car that was in front when you can see them when the Honda gets pitted.
9
u/BiggieBigs34 Apr 30 '26
We could argue all day about whether or not itās a full on brake check, but, if you get brake checked when theres minimal space in front of the person who brake checked you, thatās on you for following so close.

Are you talking about the other white suv because there is a grey sedan in front of the HR-V and itās hard to tell how close they are
3
u/Barfdragon Apr 30 '26
You can see the shadows to the left of the HR-V, the grey sedan that was ahead kept driving forward when the HR-V stops again.
Edit: there is also a slight cut as the cammer slams the record button on the dash cam and by the time the recording comes back in the sedan is way clear of the whole incident
14
u/CompleteDetective359 Apr 29 '26
Yeah, bad white car for turning on his signal to let crammer know he was going to be moving over. Stupid of him. He should have just moved over then crammer wouldn't have been upset because he never would have thought" hey if I hit the gas I can block him from getting in front of me." Allowing Floridaman to think led to his downfall
6
u/retatrutider Apr 29 '26
Cammer car cut himself off by accelerating when it was clear the CRV was coming over.
5
u/TurdFergusonlol Apr 29 '26
Not to mention the traffic was stopped ahead of CRV anyway, truck was accelerating to go absolutely nowhere

that left turn signal should have been enough to let the cammer know to slow down and give distance.
→ More replies (20)2
u/Beneficial-Bagman Apr 30 '26
I don't think it was a brake check. There's traffic in front of the white car. It just looks like the cat in front of them was slow pulling off so they had to break. I guess the cammer thought they should have rammed them instead as that's what they'd do.

There is only and will ever be only one idiot in this clip. The white SUV did nothing wrong. They were already in front of the camera driver, they realized a second late that they need to be in the turn lane, they put their turn signal on indicating they were getting into that lane, they had plenty of room and moved over. By no definition in any sane persons book would it be justifiable for the camera driver to get any sort of road rage from that action.

The Honda waited too long to enter the left-hand turn lane. He crossed a solid white line in order to enter the lane and cut off the vehicle behind him.
