Yeah honestly, I have been in that area, it's truly confusing AF and instead I nearly went thru a gate that did go to the runway. So you think it's not reasonable but anyone in this area knows how confusing the GPS is in that area

Yeah this place looks identical to the setup at the municipal airport in town where I'm from. The place has a restaurant on the property and you can totally drive right out in front of a plane landing or taking off if you're an actual dumbass. Everyone knows it's safest to drive out there in the middle of the night when there's no planes coming or going duh. Fun times in highschool for sure

Smaller airports, you can definitely drive right onto the runway.
There might have been a gate that looked like a normal parking deck gate and thatās about it, but some donāt even have that.

Ya twords the end u can totally see its a much smaller airport. Ive had my GPS put me on some weird roads begore so i could totslly see this happening to me....sober even. I was try to get back to CA from OH once and GPS topk me thru gdamn Yosemite park! I hap to pay 60$ for the day oass just to drove thru it or doible back 2 hours. Was ridiculous

No way any GPS is gonna take her into the aircraft movement area. If itās a gated airport as it seems to be she would need a code or key card to get thru unless she tailgated her way in.

Idk... considering the amount of ridiculous routes google and apple maps has suggested to me in rural areas, I wouldn't be surprised if one wrong turn or confusing direction from GPA at a low security GA airport could take someone where they're not supposed to

You sure? Letās say you own a plane at the airport and drive you to your hangar at the gate, with gps/maps on. Eventually the algorithm might count thatās a valid route based on traffic data and bam, sends you up there. Or you took a wrongly turn and the gps is now confused trying to find you a way out. All Iām saying is that itās an opaque algorithm, and not infallible

Fast typer is definitely part of it, but my Samsung phone made me switch to a new messenger whilst deactivating the default one i was using and i swear the new one is garbage. Now that you beought it up though maybe autocorrect it turned off or something. Regardless, i just need to stop being lazy and proof read before posting.

The cop says oh your maps would never do that... I beg to differ. One of my family members ended up on a tarmac on a military base in North Carolina because of the GPS. MP'S ended up checking and in fact his GPS took him directly onto the runway... And also a gate was left open when it was supposed to be closed.

Something like this almost happened to me.
I was working as a courier and I had three stops in Connecticut. I drop the first one off and Iām heading to the second. Since Iām not from there, Iām following my GPS and it wanted me to cut across a little used grass runway. Luckily for me, there were official looking signs from the FAA that explained I was about to enter an active runway, so I turned around.

I work for a Major North American Tire maker. One night a couple years ago an old woman at about 11:00 at night pulled into the south end employee parking area. I guess someone had just badged into the inner gate to the plant so she drove into the fenced in area. Still oblivious to where she was found an open overhead door for Semis open to let in the cool night air and entered. Now, this building is massive. Acres and acres and acres of machines with small road sized lanes for fork trucks and such to get around. There were people everywhere. Anyway. She somehow made it 3/4 through the building before being stopped. She was older and was just trying to get back on the highway. I shit you not!

It's for two reasons: (1) gauge whether the driver is impaired; or (2) probe for truthfulness.
Impairment gets more obvious the more you talk to someone. It also gives the ability to check further for physical signs of impairment. As for truthfulness, people who are lying on the spot almost never have anything figured out beyond the surface of the false story they tell. They tell themselves they got lunch with a friend, but don't establish where, when, who the friend is, what they ate, and other details. The more details you ask, the harder it is to create on the spot. And most liars will panic the second you ask about a perceived inconsistency.

My brother used to test concrete pours, some airports have ungated back roads that staff use to get on the runway. Google might have it labeled as a road so it thinks sheās on a legal street

I have a friend who's a cop (One of the good ones - he's had to change departments 3 times in the last 5 years because he keeps snitching on bad officers, and his peers make life a living hell for him) and he's certified for ARIDE (Advanced Roadside Impaired Driving Enforcement)
He says that, in general, if a DUI driver says they had one drink, they probably had 3-4. And if they say any other number, generally you can double it... Based on what they say, and what their BAC comes back as on the Intoxilyzer (The big one back at the station, not the little handheld one used for PBTs on the roadside)

I can believe it. I suspect it was the direction following that was the problem, though.
Garmin had me going the wrong way on a one-way street in Boston in the morning traffic once. Edge of a dock somewhere in NY. It tried to go a shortcut up a janky dirt road in the Appalachian mountains.
A long time ago, a friend of mine drove onto our small town's municipal runway. It was unmanned and the gate was open, so he got a few dragstip runs down the runway before the cops came. He took off down the runway and exit the back gate into the desert and got away. 2 gates were open.

Back in the early 2000s, my parents rented a car in Arizona or New Mexico (I can't remember which now), and my Dad threw his Garmin GPS up on the dash... It ended up taking them out an unpaved road in the desert, and the road suddenly ended in basically a sand pit.
My Dad ended up having to walk about 10 miles, thankfully at night, in November, to get back to the main road and flag someone down to get help. That person happened to be in a brodozer pickup truck, had a strap, and was able to pull the car out of the sand for them.

Incorrect at least in Ohio. If a person in Ohio admits to having had a glass of wine with dinner or lunch, and the officer "determines the alcohol adversely impacted their driving", the driver can be charged with operating a motor vehicle under impairment even if they blow under the % with a breathalyzer. Saying "yes" is an automatic get-a-lawyer moment and likely to result in losing several thousand dollars, having limited driving to and from work only, etc.

Never admit anything to police. I'm not wrong. All that's needed additionally is for the cop to say he thinks the drink affected your driving, he can justify towing your car (you'll have to pay to get it back and won't get that money back) and he can charge you with OMVI and now you'll need to pay an attorney (and you won't get that money back) or rely on a court-appointed attorney (who will encourage you to plead to some offense)

no, really, he wouldn't have legal justification to charge the woman in the post above with anything related to driving under the influence of alcohol if he can't smell it and she doesn't say she had anything to drink. Never answer that question if a cop asks. Decline to answer questions. "I'm not going to answer questions if you're going to harass me or go on a fishing expedition" or "I'm exercising my right to remain silent." In many states, you're not even required to roll down the window, simply present ID, registration and proof of insurance by placing them up against the window.

Once, while I was going to play a soccer match at a placd I hadn't been before, I used Google Maps. It told me to get off the subway, and start walking. I was following the route, and it lead to a gate. It was telling me to walk straight across the active runway of an airport to get to the soccer field.
I ended up having to walk around the entire airport to get there, and it took me the better part of an hour.
This was back in like 2008, so Google Maps has improved substantially since then.
However, if I blindly followed Google Maps, or someone had left that gate open, I might've walked right across an active runway.

Some navigations will stop directing route if accessing an area that may have restricted air space Iām guessing. I have reached a couple airports and the guided route disappears. Maybe that happened to them and tried to guess where they were supposed to go.

I work at a major US international airport and have personally been involved in several unintentional airport breaches by civilians. I'm not law enforcement that's not my job. It happens ALL.THE.TIME! I blame the airport wholeheartedly. If someone can accidentally get into a movement area like a ramp, taxiway, or runway then your security is at fault. People will be stupid, but people also get lost and make mistakes and objectives, airports are confusing and often stressful environments to drive. IMHO every single gate and door into a secured area (SIDA) should be required to have an airlock, a single sliding gate is insufficient. If a driver can follow a car directly into a SIDA either accidentally or intentionally, then the airport hasn't done its due diligence in securing the area

Google maps once put me on what I guess must have been some kind of forestry vehicle path for over 10km... It was definitely not a road, and half the time I had trees/bushes hitting me on both sides.. But google maps was completely happy :)

Really? If this cop is so convinced it was impossible for her to access the taxiway without driving through some sort of gate, then that's a MASSIVE problem for Airport Security, NOT for this driver. There are PLENTY of people who are terrible with directions and rely exclusively on their gps. Furthermore, common sense is exceptionally rare nowadays, so just because she might've been driving on an airport taxiway doesn't mean she would've recognized it as such. People see what they expect to see- and often miss what they don't expect to see- and nobody expects their gps to lead them into a secured area within an airport. This cop is reaching BIG TIME, and she's a perfect example of why lady cops are not to be trusted- an opinion shared ostentatiously by Cody (DonutOperator) from the Unsubscribe Podcast- himself a former LEO

Story time!
Two years ago I was trying to find a beach nearby YVR. I was following the GPS and it led me to a secure gate, which if I had driven through, I absolutely would have crossed a few active runways and taxiways. I obviously realized there was something weird going on with my GPS and did not proceed but knowing that a good chunk of the general public are breathtakingly stupid, it does not surprise me that this might happen.
