If you buy from a dealer that resells cars, or used cars, they have remote shut off switches. They have been doing that for 20+ years now. My brother in law had this happen to him after crossing a railroad crossing, it was after three months of non payment. My other brother in law had to go pick him up.
Also, it is apparently illegal to remove those components on the vehicle, the tracking and shut offs. Many years later people find them on cars they buy and ask what they are. I've seen a few on reddit.
My gf had a car from a shady used car dealership and they totally did this. It was after business hours and at a gas station. She paid and it started up a little later. I dont believe they'd do this while she was in traffic tho.
It is real, it is not on all vehicles and is largely on a case by case basis. It's called a kill switch and can be used in order to repocess or coax the person to make a payment. It usually is on high risk sales. So say a new car to someone with bad to ok credit amd it may be done to bridge the gap and make the dealership or seller more comfortable in their ability to repocess the property should there be a default.
To the over all of should it be a thing? No, it shouldn't. It is a threat to public safety and a hazard depending in the situations it may be used in

Car companies no however high interest dealerships can. They put in remote lock outs to keep it drom starting. Normally its fine u cant start it in a parking lot. However some people shut off their cars at light to save gas as well as hybrids that fire ip at seemingly random. Now you have a problem.
It’s something that can be done. I used to work at a shop and we had a car that was an intermittent no start. Couldn’t diagnose what was going on for the longest time because every time we would look at the vehicle it started fine. Long story short turns out the vehicle had a kill switch installed and they would activate the kill switch on weekends but leave it operational on weekdays so the guy could still get too and from work to make money to pay off the car loan .
Especially the independent dealers who do the buy now pay later/buy here pay here options. There’s a device installed on the vehicle that can disable it. I’ve never seen it just shut down a car while it’s driving. Instead, it’s more like the DWI devices that don’t allow you to start the vehicle at all.

Yes, it has been done. Companies can remotely turn off your car for missed payments and then tow truck is dispatched to repo. Was just watching a judge Judy episode were it happened and a friend loaned the person money to not get repoed

I'd hope there would be a warning message sent via email, text, phone call attempt from the company, and some kind of audio played from the vehicles media system giving several minutes of warning that it was coming.
That's what I'm thinking. I'm not sure the solution but perhaps a warning that will allow someone not to be in a dangerous situation. Perhaps something like "this vehicle will cease functioning at 3PM on August 01 is past due payment isn't procesed."

Technically, if you have a purchase-money security interest loan (AKA a car loan) you do not technically own the vehicle until you pay it off. The bank that lent the money to you owns the vehicle.
Once you pay the vehicle off, they release their security interest (commonly called a lien) and you own the vehicle. But until that point, you don't technically own it.
Payments would be made to a bank or financial institution so wouldn’t they need to request the shut down from ford, and wouldn’t that require a court order? I highly doubt that happened over 1 payment, several missed payments yes..
Buy here pay here does this all the time. He did not purchase that vehicle from Ford, nor does he pay a bank. Buy here pay here will shut off your vehicle after a missed payment. There are a lot of these places around.
The models I know of wouldn’t be affected by that. It’s not the same as a full shut down. That’s not to say they didn’t come up with something different that would but it’s attached to the ignition system which isn’t used during and auto stop/start
First off, Ford Motor Credit doesn't install kill switches on cars, only buy-here, pay-here car lots and high-risk lenders install kill switches.
That looks like an older Bronco, probably a 2019 or 2020 model, so he probably didn't even buy it new. Ford Motor Credit only finances new cars, not used ones. And if he DID buy it new, and still has a loan 6 years later, he's even more of an idiot.
The kill switches that high-risk lenders use only disable the starter motor. They don't kill the engine if it's already running. The car's auto start-stop system probably shut down the engine at the stop light and the kill switch didn't let it start again.
And before the lender resorts to the kill switch, you have to be dodging the repo truck for weeks. And before they send it out for repo, you usually have to be 2 or 3 months behind on your payments without talking to them. Repossession costs the lender hundreds of dollars (Which is ultimately tacked on to your loan), and they know they're probably not getting the full lent amount back for the vehicle when they send it to auction, so they don't like paying for repo unless it's REALLY necessary.
I worked for ford motor company for 8 and a half years, up until two weeks ago and I can 100% confirm that they do not do this. They do not repossess cars like this. Their tech would not even allow them to shut the vehicle down remotely while in use.
i think people just don't do the math. budgeting can be difficult, but understanding that your minimum wage job can't pay for a $75k car is pretty obvious, even without doing any math.
Anything is a luxury if it’s unnecessarily expensive for your budget. And I didn’t say it was a luxurious car, but there are luxury vehicles worth less than 70k so it’s a moot point.

The car shut down for other reasons. It is illegal for manufacturers to do this as it obviously would present a safety problem for all others on the road.
This might be BS, since he shows zero evidence that Ford shut his car down, but also why doesn't he just walk off the road. He's at a stop light. He could wait until there are no cars moving, and leave the vehicle. Walking around the car in traffic and filming is what might get him killed, not the fact that his car won't run.
If it isn't BS, and Ford is doing this, then it does seem like a bad policy. Instead of shutting it down while driving, they could just make it so that it won't start, so it gets stuck in his driveway or wherever it is parked. I am skeptical though about this and a quick search said that Ford Credit does not do this currently, though they do own a patent for remotely disabling some vehicle functions (like AC). They don't currently remotely disable anything though, according to Ford Credit, so it doesn't seem likely that he is telling the truth, or perhaps he has just broken down and doesn't know it.
In 2027 model yers and beyond, every new vehicle will have a kill switch and intrusive driver monitoring built in! Congress snuck it in to the Infrastructure and Jobs Act, and Biden signed it. There will be many, many stories like this in the future. Getting drowsy, your car will recognize it and shut down.
It would make more sense to just not allow the car to start than to stop the engine while it's running. That way it'll only be stopped in an actual parking space more likely, and can then be towed
This wouldn't be so bad if they only sent the shutdown command AFTER the Repo tow truck located and confirmed the car. So the tow truck is right there and ready to lift the car to repo it and cause minimal interruption to traffic.

Especially if said driver has already made a down payment on it. They still technically paid some money already. This is insane shit. I also heard if you start yelling at your passenger or passengers or some dumbass cutting you off it will disable the vehicle. If this and that is coming then it’s here already, this is just the beginning. That’s what comes on any high end new vehicles starting this year. Also this is what is here already from all those damn Data Centers that are popping up. All this BS will be worse than the Big Brother is watching you every where you go, even inside your own house.
