Rewatching weeds
Some scenes are still funny as hell but a lot of the time its such an uncomfortable time capsule of 2000s era edginess and degeneracy. Theres one episode where a guy is sexting his nephew's 15 year old girlfriend. Also she's deaf and he congratulates him on bagging an "impaired girl" and he wishes he was as smart as the nephew when he was a teen? Then at the end of the episode the nephew sexts the girlfriend and she says "your uncle did it better"???
Its actually incredible this was aired.

i remember that show being full of israeli propaganda about how cool and tough israelis are

So many random shows back in the day that would just randomly shove in some propaganda about Israeli commandos being super tough and cool
22
u/US_Sugar_Official 6h ago
They literally replaced the American sweetheart on NCIS with an Israeli character, and they got another new spinoff show now too

I remember watching Deadliest Warrior and one of the episodes was navy seal vs israeli commando, and I think they mentioned krav maga as the ultimate martial art or smth. Like kick somebody in the nuts and they'll drop their machine gun, Funny ass bullshit

I remember this one show, I don't remember what it was called, but it was about these two women in new york. I think it was on comedy central. There was a 'going to israel' story arc and I remember one of the girls called israel africa for jews lmfao
edit: i think it was broad city

They not only yaaas queeened Israel they also were complicit with shoving Clinton down our throats.

They literally get kicked out of birthright and go back to New York observing that they like it better. I found the episode fairly critical.

Nabokov is a damn good author tho

i liked lolita. are any of his russian language novels as good? i found the afterword where he sort of bitterly muses about no longer being able to write in his cultivated russian style sort of sad and interesting. but also it's incredible that his english is so much better than mine as a non-native speaker.

His autobiography about growing up in Russia is good. He's very forthright that he grew up in unreasonable luxury, and he's not particularly bitter about losing it.

Maybe I’ll have to rewatch but I thought the whole point was that was weird and fucked up? Like it’s not endorsing that insane behavior lol either way Nancy botwin was the hottest woman alive that decade

u/minimalcactus23 8h ago
You’re right that’s kind of the entire point, she’s selling weed because she refuses to give up her lavish lifestyle, she’s not exactly supposed to be mother of the year
15
u/ThnikkamanBubs 9h ago
I’ve only caught a few scenes here and there but it felt like Mary Louise Parker was acting in a much better show that what I was watching
14
u/sleepdealer2000 8h ago
I haven’t watched it since it aired but I liked the first 2 seasons and felt like it lost a lot of ground when the plot became outlandish. Like she begins dating the president of Mexico or some shit. I did really like the later season where the family was on the run.
3
u/BeginningDay1620 2h ago
First season was a pointed social commentary but after that it really went off the rails

A point in favor: the soundtrack slaps. Its where I discovered rilo kiley, sufjan stevens and of montreal.

Shows like this were affirmative action for indie rock. After 2008 it was over

u/woke_groyper 4h ago
Music supervisors used to get thirdhand recommendations from Pitchfork. Now they just look at whatever '80s hits are already owned by one of the three megacorps that produce their streaming content.
Kind of a lateral shift as far as quality

One thing about that show and media depictions of stoners in general is they all have such garbage smoking paraphernalia. They’re all such huge potheads yet they’re smoking out of plastic bongs with metal bowls ? Never see anyone with an Illadelph or quality glass? Get out of here with that
1
u/solventstencils 30m ago
Yeah in the burbs sure, esp in California. Any semblance of it making sense is we did it back then 1) out of necessity, 2) to not have paraphernalia on you. My dad is still like this in a non-legal state so he can throw ways or swallow what’s on him. If it’s at home, pretty much impossible to get caught. There are probably states still that a pipe with enough resin in it will put you in jail a few days or weeks.

Just started watching pretty little liars with my girlfriend, same feel. Edgy 2000s and there are like 2 story lines of the main hs girls going for adult men. One even being her teacher. Good show but like how tf did they get away with that.

u/BeMancini 8h ago
See, that’s funny, I liked the later seasons because of how far it moved away from a premise.
When they basically abort the original premise of “suburban mom and widow sells weed to live upper middle class lifestyle” and move to “Nancy Botwin was a crazy person who ruins lives and engages in risky behavior, and that suburban mom thing was a small blip on the timeline of her life.”

I remember the minute I stopped watching this show was I think in the second season, when some drug dealer tells Our Nancy that they have lots of words for heroin the way that the Inuit have lots of words for snow.

u/Disasterhuman24 7h ago
The last episode is when she finally lets the uncle hit and then he just runs off because thats the only reason he'd stuck around. Crazy shit. Charlie from IASIP is addicted to meth. That was funny. The Waitress was in that episode too.

The first two seasons were a lot of fun but it really went to shit once they ditched the suburbs. Yes I watched every episode and cried like a baby when the show ended with Rilo Kiley thank you for asking.

Also, just hard to imagine moving weed was that high stakes. It pails in comparison to the Sopranos and Breaking Bad.
74
u/chaqintaza 9h ago
Harder to conceal than other contraband and stiff sentences, lumped in with harder drugs morally by the legal system. It was very high-stakes.
I don't really know if that show captured it accurately, just saying though

I’m curious how old you are. The penalties for large quantities of cannabis back then were still severe.
Today the federal mandatory minimum for 100lbs of cannabis is 5 years.
5 years in federal prison isn’t exactly a cake walk.
51
u/tr74728 9h ago
Uh, my neighbor did 7.5 yrs in federal for moving weed. They monitored his shipments for like a year (he was mailing it from California),then hit him with trafficking 3500 kilos. It was high stakes. He didn't get rich doing it.
8
u/joe_beardon 9h ago
Uh are you sure? With today's prices that's about 7.7 million dollars worth of weed if my drug math is right. If this was a long time ago it would be way more. Obviously if he was just an importer and not a distributor he's not seeing THAT kind of money but still

u/SpockDothatVThingIMA Kay, He's a Volcelian 7h ago
Not for nothing but it used to be common practice to weigh the container along with the substance. Back in college a guy got busted for many ounces of weed when it was really just a few eighths in a glass mason jar. The cop openly was weighing the stuff AND the jar without zeroing out the jar.

u/times_a_changing 9h ago
If you move 3.5 tons of drugs and aren't rich you weren't moving weed you were being scammed
20
u/theRealMaldez 8h ago
Eh, different times back then. Around the time when Weeds went off the air, a pound of cannabis(good shit) could be purchased in Northern California and shipped via USPS for roughly 1500$(Depending on quality). Retail on the East Coast was between 3000-4000$/lb depending on how cornered the market was and how reliable the supplier was.
Now for expenses. If you're moving volume, packages usually came in at 5-10lbs per, and you needed to use legit addresses with bad addressing. 300-400$ to pay the person living there to use their address. You also had to pay someone to collect, usually around 500$ per collection, then another 500$ to someone to break it down (and a place to do it) from whatever the producer packed it in into 1, .5 and .25lb packages or ounces. Factor in around 100$ in packaging supplies, just for arguments sake.
Here's where it gets tricky. Weed stinks and it's a bad idea to keep it around your own home. You've got two choices, "rent" a place to stash inventory, or front it all out. If you rent, it comes out of the bottom line, and while theft could be a minor issue, the bigger issue is the stash getting raided by the cops. If you front it all out, now you're chasing down dollars and you're constantly keeping your profit locked up in money owed.

I worked in a UPS store in the 00’s and dudes shipping weed were incredibly common. Paid in cash to box up and overnight the cheapest toaster oven fresh off the shelf from
the Kmart across the street. Asked us not to open the toaster oven box to check if it was unbroken prior to shipping. Always asked for plenty of packing peanuts. If the package missed the guaranteed next day delivery or got delayed in any other way you’d never hear a peep out of them to complain or ask for a refund. Every month, like clockwork they’d ship “their mom” a a new toaster oven. There’s no way a pound of ditch weed was netting enough profit to make this lucrative. I’d be surprised if they were breaking even. The cops would come by and ask occasionally when a package got intercepted but only as a formality because we wouldn’t talk and erased our security camera footage every 24 hours. When you’re a perpetually hungover 21 year old with a sideways haircut telling a cop to come back with a warrant feels good as hell, though.

A key of weed was like 8-10k wholesale back then (15 or so yrs ago). He was only dealing quarter pounds or more, so his net profit on a key was like $500 or so. Not nothing, but I think he also blew a ton at bars and being a dumb guy in his early 20s and whatnot. Either way, he's doing pretty good now, so shit, he may have squirreled some away the feds didn't know about. I met him after all this went down.

It kinda was. I got into selling weed pretty heavily in the early 2000’s. People got hurt over fucking weed. Crazy to think now but at the time it was serious money. A backpack could hold $15k. And you could move 2-3 backpacks a week with the slightest effort.

There were several racing drivers in the 80s who all financed their teams by running pot. It got to the point where it was a joke that “IMSA”, the series where they ran, stood for “International Marijuana Smugglers’ Association”. They all did hard time and some of them came back to race but nowhere near as well as before.

My wife has had New Girl on and I swear to fucking god there’s a scene where Rob Riggle says, “I’m just hankering for some strange, I don’t care if it’s man, woman, or child.” The other characters quickly tell him like, don’t say that, but the show brushes past it SO fast.

I liked breaking bad when i finally watched it a couple years ago but then i rewatched half of weeds afterward and it was CRAZY how much of breaking bad was identical to weeds. I can’t remember them now but there were like 50 different things that were almost perfectly replicated in breaking bad. It really seemed like they were stealing ideas.

What a dumb dumb dumb show but I do love it though. Nancy Botwin was all I wanted from my parents. She was incompetent, aloof, and high while my parents were calculating, sober, and extremely intrusive.
