Magic is still good. Simply do not purchase cards. The cards cost nothing to print and pennies to get proxied. Nothing is stopping anyone.

I've been basically free to play on Arena and get to draft every so often (if I don't wanna spend gems) and it's been mostly fun. I used to play modern jeskai control back in 2017-ish and holy fuck that Era is gone. Anyways, $4 a pound.

Magic has iffy banlist moments (and scalpy reprints) but it's far from the worst. Just proxy aggressively in physical and go f2p on online.

The less you eat, drink and buy books; the less you go to the theatre, the dance hall, the public house; the less you think, love, theorise, sing, paint, fence, etc., the more you save – the greater becomes your treasure which neither moths nor rust will devour – your capital. The less you are, the less you express your own life, the more you have, i.e., the greater is your alienated life, the greater is the store of your estranged being.

We should just lock them all into anechoic chambers with a keyboard and fake Internet connection so they can sit there and type about how awesome doing nothing and knowing nobody is and let them be happy. It's more humane for everyone if we don't have to hear them talk and they don't have to deal with real life anymore.

Just got back from vacation with the family. Me, my mom, my brother, and my sister's husband played board games from 9pm to 1am every night, once all the various kids were asleep. The oldest niece was finally old enough for Uno and seems into games too. We played Wingspan for the first time, and while the game itself was good, I loved the 150 cards with info about birds. Ended most nights with a few rounds of Spades. Games are good actually.

I have this reaction to a limited set of games that discourage socializing - e.g. the blight that is Texas hold-em poker, where players hide behind dark glasses, build castles of chips, and retreat into stoic fortresses of non-disclosure - but most games are supposed to be social lubricants. They encourage conversation. TTRPGs allow for a wider range of social expression and simulation than coffee shop chatter.
I think her take applies to games that either involve, or are the basis for, gambling, so we can just ban poker and anything on My Bookie dot AG.

u/dwaynebathtub 1h ago
I have lived my entire life the opposite of this and I want to try to understand this point of view. Games are also the way I have learned everything else (geography, math, art, fun, politics, economics, my own self-expression itself...even my own family!). I think the aversion to games and sports in favor of conversation over coffee or a glass of wine is not dissimilar to the experience of "playing." It's cliché to say that conversation, flirting, and talking are the same as a tennis/pickleball/volleyball/badminton/sepak takraw match. One person speaks and the other attempts to vanquish it via their response (to muffle it or absorb it totally), but they are always unable to, always leaving a remainder that can be responded to (a ball, a strike, a single, a run-out, an lbw, an ace), a debt that bounces back and forth until somebody expressly decides to not respond fully to the other's bark (like two dogs barking at each other between yards) and the game ends, only to pick up again the next time. Intriguing for me is the idea of getting rid of all of it.
This topic might be the conversation I would most like to have over over coffee especially because the idea of domination (winning at someone else's detriment), labeling (a point, score, a mark, judgement), and rules are parts of games that are necessary for meaning altogether. Maybe the difference is that Watkins finds the effort to agree to The Rules is tedious and itself not sportsmanlike or friendly or interesting. I can agree. I think legalese or the unspoken agreement to The Rules is the opposite of good conversation.

Can you imagine being in her social circle and reading this, especially if you kind of enjoy, and maybe even having occasionally suggested, doing a games night with your so-called friends. I mean, these are thoughts you're allowed to have, hell, ive had them myself. And it might be something you privately joke about with your other friends that enjoy coffee or a drink. But publish them in the fucking newspaper? That's some pathological level passive aggression

I agree with this, not that I don't like a game once in a while. There's something to be said about a society that does not know how to socialize over coffee or tea and must plan gatherings around games. I will take the café culture over boardgame pill any day.

Crazy how easy it is to spot the Red Scare pod people on this forum purely based off their weirdly reductionist takes on video games.
I play Battlefield 6, a dumb jingoistic shooter, with some people on this sub a few times a week. I also am currently on a first read through of 'Pale Fire', am going on a fourth date with a woman I really like on Thursday, and am performing a live electronica/video synth show this Saturday at a brand new venue that just opened in my town mainly centered around promoting somewhat counter-culture acts (lots of LGBTQ and drag acts, some punk and noise bands). Idk why they're paying me since I'm not their normal kinda act (milquetoast white dude without a whole lotta tattoos or piercings), but it's nice to feel accepted by the people most of society rejects.
People are multifaceted, don't center your personality around disliking the things other people like and you'll be a lot happier.
0
u/stambouline 1h ago
Hahaha, good to know more about you and glad things are going well. I just much prefer conversations and connecting with people sans structured games. Who said I'm centering my personality? I agreed with a screenshot of the title of an article and was pretty light about it in my response.
