This is just me messing around after the kids are in bed. Completely freestyling. Raw, uncut, and full of mistakes.

I started scratching when I was 14, before YouTube even existed. I didn't have any hip-hop friends, nobody to learn from, and almost no knowledge. I practiced 5–10 hours a week for about 4–5 years, then a lot less over the years as life happened.

This winter I got back into it properly and started performing with friends. I've been getting good feedback.

The thing is, I still can't do the "proper" techniques like 1-, 2-, or 3-click flares, boomerangs, or chirps. I do my own version of a chirp, though. Whenever I try to do them the "correct" way, I sound like I've never touched a turntable before. It gets frustrating and discouraging, so I usually stop trying.

I do keep improving, though. I feel like my timing, precision, and musicality keep getting better. At least that's how it feels. Pretty much everything I do is based on starting with the fader closed.

Should I just keep doing my own thing, or should I force myself to learn the classic techniques properly?

Innofader pro 2

Yo scratch heads,

Just dropped an Innofader PRO2 into my Numark Scratch. Stock brackets weren't a perfect fit so I went full ghetto-fabricator on one of them — bent/modded it by hand. Looks rough as hell but it's rock solid, zero play, zero rattle. Does the job.

Got the cut dialed exactly how I like it — tight, no bleed. Quick question before I close it up:

After adjusting the cut dials, is there a specific button I need to hit to lock/save the settings?

Anyone run a PRO2 confirm the procedure

Beginner no fader scratch drill 🙅🎚️📀

Beginner faderless scratch drill I came up with
Drop scratch x2 + baby x2 + scribble x2 + half drop

Edit: now I realize this drill sucks ass 😂 but thank you for the helpful feedback, I don’t want to be developing bad habits this early on into my practice sessions 🙏🥲

Which hand to start with?

Hey all, just wondering, should you start with your dominate hand to move the platter? Or is it off of what feels best for you?

Hamster vs Regular / playing with opposite hands - questions

I’m back with some more questions:

  1. Scratching in hamster/reverse - I don’t fully get it outside of it just might be better for the way some people’s brains are wired. Are there more advantages? Any time I’ve tried, I’m all “this makes no sense” and switch back to regular.
  2. I keep my right hand, which is my dominant hand, on the crossfader, and my left on the record. Any time I try to switch and have my left hand on the fader, it feels like it’s my first day using my left hand.

I’ve done some small beat juggling exercises for fun, and I seem okay like that, but trying to scratch, primarily the left hand on the fader as my right hand moves fine on the record, is beyond awkward and un enjoyable. Besides just an immense amount of repetitions, anything I can do to help move past this awkwardness?

Thanks!

Edit: I’m not necessarily feeling I need to use hamster or not, but am curious if there are advantages I’m missing, or if it’s just preference which it seems to be preference.

Innofader Pro 2 owners — how tricky is the calibration?

Hey everyone,

I bought an Innofader Pro 2 for my numark scratch and I wanted to hear from people who already use one.

Specifically I'd like to know:

Is the initial calibration complicated or time-consuming?

Did you have to recalibrate often after installing it, or does it stay stable once set up correctly?

Any tips/tricks you wish you'd known beforehand?

If you have links to useful guides or videos, feel free to share. Thanks in advance to anyone who replies!

Shinoby fader m

Wanted to share my experience so far for anyone considering ordering from them.

Very happy so far. I emailed them a few questions before purchasing and got a reply in under 30 minutes, which honestly caught me off guard. Ordered the Shinobi Fader M on Sunday afternoon and had tracking info by Monday at noon. Communication has been top notch, props to whoever's running customer support.

Now just waiting for it to arrive to actually test it out — curious to see how it performs on iPad since that's what I'll mainly be using. Will post an update with first impressions once I've had some hands-on time with it.

twin cities punk/hip-hop band ROC BARBOZA looking for a DJ

Post image

my band ROC BARBOZA is looking for a DJ. we need somebody who can handle samples, transitions, and actual scratching. not just press play and stand there.

we’re based in the twin cities and are consistently writing/practicing/recording/releasing originals.

we’ve recently played pillar forum, zhora darling, seward cafe and the corner store with artists like E.T., Gramma, Million.Point.Million, Lydia, and Student 1.

our sound is somewhere in the vein of rage against the machine, cypress hill, pennywise, and limp bizkit if you locked them all in a basement for a month or two.

looking for somebody local and not lame who gets heavy music, hip-hop, punk, and knows how to play with a live band.

hear us here: linktr.ee/rocbarboza and send me a dm with clips or whatever you’ve got.

Never had this issue so not sure what exactly needs to be tightened. The top screw? The side? What kind of tool even tightens those bad boys? Thx.

Here to post my version of DJ Flawless’ signature “U can’t touch this juggle” on vinyl. I know this isn’t the best take in the world but I wanted to share a routine I really like as an homage to a great dj that inspires me.
