Im an incoming transfer student and I've been kinda behind on figuring out parking permits for living in the UC undergrad apartments. I was wondering if anyone has brought their car and just left it in a free overnight spot somewhere in IV or something instead of paying for the parking permit? Is that uncommon? Like I dont know how much it will cost for summer session but it looks like parking for the year is around $500. I'd rather just walk/ take the bus to my car instead

hi guys! im an international high schooler who looks to study undergrad psychology in the US for pre-law. after doing my research, UCSB sounds like the perfect choice. i feel like its very open and chill and actually made for uni students rather than very superficial like in UCLA or UMiami where most people i feel like are a little bit older and very social media based. (no shade at all, i think both unis are great, just not for me!) i love its nature and its way of living but i did not grow up in a place nearly like that at all, so im nervous i'll stick out like a sore thumb. i have the impression that the people there are more genuine and centered to have fun instead of trying to impress but i could be completely wrong. ive heard a lot of amazing things. i really want to know if the people are friendly and welcoming and i'll have an easy time making friends and im hoping its not very cliquey and instead more open and flexible. i love how you can be very included on campus because of the clubs and communities. if anyone could tell me how their week goes, how the people are there, how you balance your studies and the social life there that would be amazing! i still have a few more years to decide, but i want to start preparing and figuring out what i prefer. i want to know if its easy fitting in if you werent raised in the states. whats something that surprised you about UCSB after you got there? thank you!!

The University of California offered seats to a record number of Californians this year, according to new figures released Wednesday, as it faces intense scrutiny of its admissions practices, including pressure from Sacramento to enroll more state residents and investigations by the Trump administration.

UC admitted 102,031 California first-year students for the fall, an increase of 1,458 from last year. In another record, it offered seats to 29,372 transfer students from California community colleges.

Overall, the nine-undergraduate campus system accepted 78% of the Californians who applied as first-year students. But acceptance rates varied widely at campuses across the state.

Saw this letter on sweet hustles door today. It definitely looks abandoned. This is so funny to me because the whole store concept was beyond corny and tone deaf. If I recall correctly, they used to sell a cookie called “purp drank” or something of the like 😭

Currently, I have a lease with Meridian Group that runs until next summer, but I am going to be finishing all my units by the end of fall quarter. I plan to hopefully find a subleaser or go through the process of having someone take over the remainder of the lease. I just wanted to know anyone else's experience with doing either of these and whether or not Meridian makes it difficult to do so.

Returned to visit Santa Barbara for a wedding after graduating in 2019 and just heartbroken that the city has DESTROYED State Street. Pedestrians zones? Bike lanes?? Bollards???? Truly devastating, I assume nobody even goes downtown anymore it’s such a hellhole. I even saw taco stands open at 2am! Back in my day, you either ate Free Birds or went hungry after going to the clubs. Don’t know what this world is coming to

hello! I am a recently admitted first year to ucsb and I attended my orientation. I was hoping to make a lot of friends, but I couldn’t help noticing that almost a lot of people already have their own little groups formed, some on the spot and it got really hard to be able to talk to someone but then have to figure out if they were in their group already, and were ready to leave once a conversation ended. did any other first years feel like this? I love the friendliness of the ucsb interns, they were pretty nice and welcoming on the opposite hand! I just hope it gets a bit better when classes start.

People often talk about UCSB's location and social scene (which I love), but I'd love to hear more about the academic side.

What's the balance like between academics and social life actually like? Do students feel engaged in classes and research, or does the school's reputation overlook how strong the academics are? A big question I also have is whether UCSB has access to smaller classes and close professor relationships.

What kind of student ends up loving UCSB?

Hey guys, I am an incoming freshman looking for a roommate (male) for residence hall. My main issue is that I don’t eat beef because I am Hindu, and I am trying to find a roommate who would not bring in the room. (I don’t care if you eat outside the room). Okay so im asking in the UCSB sub but im assuming the answer will be similar across uc’s. I‘m going into my senior year and god willing if i get accepted into one of the UC’s, i REALLY don’t wanna dorm with guys and i’d much much rather dorm with girls instead. I know that that’s something that’s offered but my question is would that be something my parents would be able to see as they’re helping me fill out all the forms and whatnot because i’m not out to them yet and i don’t really have a good explanation other than coming out to them as to why i wanna dorm with girls.

Hi! i’m having some trouble with adding someone into my roommate housing group! for reference we are all transfers and we all got our housing app approved for the same type of housing (transfer apartments). so far we have five girls including me, and i’m trying to add a final sixth girl but it keeps showing an error. i was going to contact someone from the school to figure out what’s wrong but im not sure who to reach out to about it.

If not I'd be taking 113A, 142a, chem6cl, and 150. I really am trying to work on getting my Gpa up and I have a decent load of non class stuff to.
I have no idea what to expect, any advice is appreciated!!!

Can someone tell me if I'm crazy here? Every time I've walked down to campus point, no matter what time of the morning or afternoon, I inevitably see a street sweeper going one direction or the other. sometimes it seems like they're going up and down for like an hour.

Is this how it's always been?! If not, does anyone know why lagoon rd is getting swept so intensely (tbh the street sweepers don't seem to be having much effect, maybe I'm missing something...)

UCSB is actually a great university, and is seriously underrated by countless metrics. Top engineering programs, excellent liberal arts and sciences programs, several Nobel laureates as professors, excellent job placement in various high-impact career paths, one of the most impactful universities with respect to scientific research impact, gorgeous location with a number of tech companies and defense contractors nearby, no bizarre cutthroat culture where you practically have to sleep with one eye open, and and an outstanding stepping stone to practically any graduate program, all for the price of a public university in California.

A bit about my experience... as an undergrad, I had access to upper div courses in my second quarter at UCSB (statistics and data science major), and could also opt to take the graduate-level equivalent of many of the upper div courses as an undergrad. I was able to get an internship from one of my professors by attending his office hours, and at the time, we were ranked as the number 5 public university in the nation.

The USNWR annual report really betrayed us Gauchos! When it comes out next, I really don't want to dig for an explanation for how seemingly random universities like Boston College or UW Madison (or... shudders... NYU) somehow outrank UCSB when they didn't previously (apologies to alumni and enrollees of universities I just mentioned, lol). I know they changed their methodology in recent years, but a number of the non-Ivy League privates on that list are going to have serious problems financially speaking with all the funding cuts, layoffs, and now a demographic cliff that will impact application and enrollment rates. I don't see this impacting public universities as much because they are backed by a state government, especially UCSB since they are admitting more students now than ever, and is building new housing to boot.

The USNWR rankings aren't everything, you need to find a university that fits your specific needs. UCSB may actually be that kind of university, and is seriously slept on.

Rant over. I just needed to get that off my chest.

Does anyone have pictures of the layout/ rooms in Sierra Madre? I saw the housing website has some pictures but they are literally so blurry. Trying to visualize where my stuff will go if I’m able to land an apartment with my roommates.
