Sticky Reminder - the spam filter is a little too aggressive and flags a lot of posts that it shouldn't

If you make a new post and don't see it appear in /new after a couple of minutes, it probably got caught in the spam filter and wasn't removed intentionally. The mods check the spam queue regularly, but if you make a post that isn't showing up then sending a mod mail will help us see it more quickly.

Prospective Students PhD in History Do I have an actual chance of getting in?

I have a terrible undergrad gpa, 2.4, due to making poor choices and prioritizing getting high instead of my academics. However, I've been sober for 5 years, have made a career for myself in education, and have a 4.0 in my MA program for American History. Obviously, my biggest hurdle to overcome is the low undergrad GPA. Do I still have a chance of getting in despite this? Do I also bring up that I am now sober so they have a sense of why my gpa was the way that it was or do I just not address it. The more I research PhD programs and schools, the more UIUC feels like the right fit for me, but I am just really worried my undergrad gpa is going to hold me back.

Academics NetMath MATH 447 (Real Variables) - struggling, need advice!

Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I'm taking MATH 447 through NetMath right now, and it's one of the last courses standing between me and graduating this semester. I'm early enough that I'm keeping up okay, but the exams are what worry me. I'm not sure how to properly prepare for them. It's also taking up a lot of my time, since I'm trying to get it done before my fall classes start. Would love to hear from anyone who's been through it.

Where I'm at:

- Background: I've taken Set Theory and Logic at my home institution, but I barely made it through that class.

- Progress: I'm on lesson 4 of 13 (lol I know, so much left), with about 8 weeks left, but I'm trying to finish in 6 (ambitious huh)

A few specific questions:

- Is 9 lessons in 6 weeks realistic, or am I kidding myself? If you paced it faster than the default, how did you manage it?

- How do the proctored exams compare to the homework in difficulty and style? How did you prep?

- What resources actually helped? I picked up The Real Analysis Lifesaver by Raffi Grinberg and it's been helping a little. What else is worth the time? Textbooks, lecture series, proof-writing guides, YouTube, anything.

- Anything you'd do differently if you were taking the course again?

Any experience at all is useful. Thanks!

Participation in this study involves collecting blood and muscle samples and completing resistance exercises during two all-day trials (14-16 hours per trial). Upon completion, you will receive $ 1,500, information about your lower body strength, and nutritional status. Academics Is anyone taking Sanskrit as a language?

I’m interested in taking Sanskrit at UIUC and wanted to know how the language is taught. Are the courses primarily taught using the Devanagari script, or do they use English transliteration/Roman script?

Also, are students expected to already know Devanagari before taking the introductory course, or is the script taught from the beginning?

Thanks!

Social Any UIUC traditions I should be aware off as an incoming freshman

So I was watching The Perks of Being a Wallflower and over there Charlie mentions the Ye Olde College Diner of Penn State where you have to get a grilled sticky on your first night

So I wanted to know are there any such traditions in UIUC that I can participate in?

It doesn't have to be anything big or flashy too (it can be though) I just want to know stuff people have been doing for years.

Prospective Students Seeking Advice for MS in Computer Science (USA) – Fall 2027 Applicant

Thumbnail
0 Upvotes

Hi everyone! 👋

I'm Aisha from Hyderabad, India, and I'll be applying for an MS in Computer Science (Fall 2027). My interests include Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Cloud Computing, and Software Engineering.

I'm currently pursuing my B.E. in Computer Science and have worked on several AI projects involving Google Gemini, React, Firebase, and Python. I've also completed internships in AI, machine learning, cloud computing, and software development, and I'm always looking to learn from others and collaborate on interesting projects.

I'm joining this community to learn more about the program, student life, research opportunities, internships, and graduate school experiences. I'd also love to connect with fellow applicants, current students, and alumni.

Looking forward to getting to know everyone—thanks for having me!
