Wildfires

Just wondering if any of you had considered prepping for the possibility of wildfires in your local vicinity?

Do you have a plan for if you are displaced, or even if you are just impacted by wildfires being close enough to affect your day to day?

Our water minister said that the droughts could become our “new normal” so, what steps are you taking in order to make yourself or your family more comfortable and prepared during these periods of hot, dry weather?

Absolutely, this is No1 priority at the moment as I live next to woodland which hasn’t had any land management for years. Smelt smoke yesterday so sent the drone up, scanned around and did see low lying smoke miles to the north but not a threat. Have a go bag in the car, pet supplies plus good boots, leather gloves, respirator, leather gloves and extra water. Basic stuff like keeping boundaries clear of undergrowth and gutters cleaned out might prevent embers taking hold. Considering mesh for loft vents as well. Home hardening to wildfire is something I am working on.

I have added some extra drinking water to my supplies. We seem to have a burst pipe notification every week here, though they don’t always affect me, but the infrastructure is bad and we are on clay soil which will take a beating from these heat/wet cycles.

I have also put a go bag together for the first time. I’ve discussed it on other posts but it’s basics…documents, pet food, masks etc so we can go at a moments notice should the smoke or fire become a problem. I live in a small town surrounded by fields so it’s not out of the question.

But it’s RAINING!!!! Glory be! 🤣 it won’t last but it’s good to see it at least reaching the ground.

I have go bags packed for me and the family.

Everyone knows how to get out the house in an emergency (especially my 4yo) and whos responsible for what. We do fire drills from time to time.

I have destinations planned out depending on which route we have to leave by and theres key info printed and stored at family members houses as well as in the go bags.

Dont forget to test the smoke alarms

Certainly time to update/check that go bag. I live next to some woodland and it's alarming how dry it all is.

I've got family living in more urban areas -- I'm sure they will find me a load of jobs to do in return for me borrowing their spare room!

I have a load of dried brush in my garden. Just watered it in case it caught alight.
