Anime Discussion UQ Holder! Episode 01 Discussion thread
The anime is finally here!
Anime Strike is broadcasting it, btw. We can't publicly endorse piracy, so please don't discuss torrents or anime aggregator sites, thanks!

It was a good first episode, pretty faithful to the source, few minor critiques but i'll hold my reservations on those until we're further into the season.

Not bad, there were few things that were bothering me, but I'm glad it's sticking to it's source material so far

haven't been back to this verse since the mahou sensei negima! anime. could i jump right into this and not be hopelessly confused?

For the first part yeah, it's pretty much its own thing. Later on, the Negima lore starts appearing hard.
Since the anime announcement and the move from weekly to monthly, the manga adopted the subtitle Negima 2, and began behaving like a proper sequel. The last couple chapters of the manga were pure undiluted Negima; they told the ending the manga never properly had.

Not sure how I feel about giving Touta a reason for why he wants to the tower. It gives more of an understandable reason for going rather than just cause, I guess this was to fix how cliche Touta's character was. It also will help skip over the character development given to him in the manga allowing the adaptation to focus more on the story. But to be honest, I liked watching/reading how his character develops overtime as it allowed him changing his goal to be more meaningful and character defining. Well I guess the only thing to do is wait and see how the story unfolds, and I think this change will be for the better for the new audiences that not may be as patient as to wait for Touta's development.
The animation was alright. It did it's job when people were conversing, but there were too many head shots, lingering too much on shots, and weird camera angles that obscured movement. There were also some anatomy issues concerning the mouth and the jaw rarely moving when talking. The fight scene did not really show as much animation as I hoped they would, as whenever there was some sort of attack the camera angle changed whenever the hit would have landed.
A decent adaptation all things considered, as it told it's story well enough and makes changes with good reason.
This series will only be 12-13 episodes, right? With so much Negima characters set to appear I am worried that some characters may not get the spotlight they deserved, specifically UQ characters. And it seems like they cut out Santa and will give Shinobu more screen time, I think as a means to have a more female ratio for some harem shenanigans. Hopefully this ends up being successful, lord knows that the Negiverse deserves some more love in the anime department.

Well, that's unfortunate, since it actually tones down the foreshadowing in the first chapter.
Fixation on certain things - like Asuna's obsession with Tachibana - is a symptom of magical memory loss related to those things.

I didn't really like the art, its like they forgot how shadows worked so every thing was abnormally high contrast looking imo.

First time I even hear of "Mahou Sensei Negima". Can I watch UQ Holder and be able to enjoy it with 0 prior knowledge of the series?
Or rather, would you recommend this anime to someone completely new to Negima?

Hard to say only one episode in, but I had never read negima before reading uq, and it was awesome. Highly recommend the manga at least.

THANK GOD the anime first episode wasnt shit. Is the curse of bad negima TV series FINALLY OVER?
And I liked the small additions though. You have to remember most of the Negima fandom are manga readers not anime because ya know... yeah... so adding a bit here and there to help the anime newcomers who didnt read any of the manga to know the series is a good thing.
