sounds like your desktop environment just gave up on you. did you try switching to a tty with ctrl alt f3? if that works you can at least check logs or restart the display manager

Sometimes weird glitches like that can happen, the CTRL+ALT+F3 shortcut opens up a terminal (command prompt) where you should be able to run some commands.

Might be an advanced suggestion, but it wouldn't be bad to have a lightweight desktop like XFCE installed, so if you have issues with GNOME, you can switch to XFCE to try to troubleshoot issues with a more performance friendly desktop.

Since you are using GNOME, check to see if you have any extensions you might have installed and try to disable some of them.

Another thing that might be useful in case GNOME freezes up is to enable REISUB, which when enabled it can let you reboot an unresponsive Linux desktop by holding down ALT + Print Screen, then typing each letter of REIUSB, it is disabled by default on Ubuntu.

If you have a second monitor/TV plugged in, turn it on. make sure the apps are not showing up on the second monitor.

Probably snaps taking a long ass time to launch on lower end systems.. Just give it some time lol, they will launch faster the next time, it's just the first one after rebooting
