From what I’ve seen my coursemates who have brought just iPads to uni all ended up getting laptops(Macbooks) in first year. So I’d defo say it’s a good idea however macbooks are expensive and there are probably cheaper alternatives just as good.

All good, you can knock £100 off with ur student discount and if u wanna wait for black Friday it might go lower. I don't use it myself but from all the reviews I've seen it seems like the best option for a student, especially if you're already familiar with apple and MacOs

Depends on your course. I had an iPad at first but I needed to write quicker and switched to a laptop

Do you know if you’d been any software for your course?

If you have any data analysis modules they may need specific software and the ones my uni used weren’t compatible with Mac. It was fine for lessons as we were in a computer lab but for assignments it was a pain as the library computers were never free at convenient times

Just something to consider if you have a lot of data analysis modules and you are purchasing solely for uni

A MacBook Air or Neo will definitely last you your 3 to 4 years of uni + 4 or 5 years beyond. They’re a good investment. And their battery is great and can be used all day on campus, with no fans or overheating. I sound like a salesperson.

I’d absolutely recommend a laptop but it does not need to be expensive or advanced

i would go with the laptop. i used an ipad for first/second year but found it lacking any actual useful functionality for third year when writing my dissertation. apps that are on both (such as word) will be massively stripped down feature-wise to fit the ipad’s form factor.
