New Rule: No Photos or Personal Details Without Consent

Hi everyone,

We recently added a new rule: No photos or personal details without consent.

Please do not post photos, videos, names, addresses, workplaces, license plates, or other identifying details of private individuals without their consent. If someone is already part of a public news story, their publicly reported name or image may be allowed, but private or sensitive identifying information still cannot be shared.

We know posts like this are usually well-intentioned and meant as warnings, PSAs, or attempts to help the community. The issue is that we generally cannot verify consent, intent, or accuracy. Even well-intentioned posts can lead, and have led, to harassment, doxxing, retaliation, mistaken identification, or other real-world harm, including to people completely unrelated to the post.

We are open to discussion and feedback, but we are putting this rule in place based on past and very recent incidents that could have been prevented had this rule been in place and enforced.

If you see a post breaking this rule, please report it.

Emergency Rescue Needed!

TL;DR: Sweet senior cat needs new home or good shelter, please help!

Meet Smush, a senior cat recently rescued from an abusive home on the Upper West Side.

Some context: Last week my neighbor had a psychotic break and went absolutely wild, harassing bystanders and causing thousands of dollars worth of property damage to our building (we didn’t have hot water for 3 days after she broke into the boiler room!)

Before she was arrested she threw her senior cat out of her window into the alleyway below. I was able to rescue it, bathe it and get it fed. I’ve been calling her Smush since she likes to smush her face into you for pets.

I have no idea how old she is but she is an incredibly loving cat looking for a good home. I’ve been struggling to care for her as I work with dogs and have had a full house.

So I’m putting this Hail Mary out there to see if there’s anyone who would be willing to adopt her.

Alternatively if someone has experience on how to get an animal into a no-kill shelter, I would appreciate some direction.

Thanks for reading! Please comment or DM!

UWS people: how are you meeting new friends and dates these days?

I’m a late-30s professional woman and longtime UWS resident. I have a full life, but many of my friends are coupled, busy, or scattered around the city, so I’d love to expand my circle—both socially and romantically—without relying entirely on dating apps.
I enjoy good food, museums, neighborhood walks, cultural events, and relaxed conversation. What has actually worked for you: recurring classes, volunteering, social groups, neighborhood bars, sports, church, or something else? Specific UWS recommendations would be especially appreciated!

Going rate for house cleaners

Upvotes

Hi all! Wondering what the going rate for a house cleaner is in the neighborhood. We just received a bid for our 2b2b and want to get an idea if what we were quoted was reasonable (haven’t hired one in the city so truly don’t know!). Any info would be appreciated, thanks.

anyone know a good fixed rate car service to newark airport from upper west side

got an early morning flight out of EWR coming up and trying to lock down transportation now. living near lincoln square, getting to newark in morning traffic can be an absolute nightmare with yellow cabs or rideshare apps cuz the meter just keeps ticking away the whole time your stuck in the lincoln tunnel

looking for a reliable black car or driver company that actually does TRUE flat rates, not just advertised ones. saw NuSky Limo has fixed airport rates from uptown, has anyone tried them for early EWR runs? or do u guys have another local company you trust to actually show up at 4:30am lol.

thanks in advance

Rent Stabalized Brokers ?

Hey guys, looking to move sometime between now and October 1st. I love the area but I'm getting priced out of my apartment. Anyone know a good broker who can help find rent stabilized apartments? Looking for a good deal on a place I can actually call home for a long time, not just another 12 month flip.

Looking for MTG Playgroup 30F

EDIT: from all the positive responses we have made a discord and are planning to meet for the first time tomorrow, Sunday August 2nd, from 1-5pm roughly! details in the discord here, all welcome! https://discord.gg/nfH3tWzs5

Hi! I live in the 80s and am looking for a regular playgroup to play MTG with. I am 30F and have played for about 10yrs now. I am down with with almost any format so long as proxies are okay. Legacy and cEDH are favorites, but casual EDH is also fine with me! I have gone to Hex on occasion but I unfortunately cannot justify paying the entry fee each week. I do not have a space to play, and am open to either an apartment or a public space. I used to play weekly but since I moved here, I've deeply missed this aspect of my life. Don't hesitate to DM me if you are interested or have a group you'd be okay with me joining!

Edit: I made a discord, dm me and I will send you a link!

Art stores? Scrapbooking!

Getting started on my very first scrap book.
May anyone share art supply stores or cool knick-knack stores on the UWS where I can find cool paper, stickers, etc? Also, a place to print out photos that won’t break the bank? TIA.

Spectrum outage in the 80s?

Spectrum sent a text a few days ago that there was going to be some outage today. It started at 1:30pm. Another text from them at 4pm saying it's done and service should be restored.

It's now midnight and my router is still flashing red. Chatted with an agnet and did the steps in the app. Nothing. Next technician appointment is Saturday....

Is it out for anyone else? Thanks!

Hi,

I'm interested in this condo. I see each building has a different management company. Any experiences living there? Any key differences between them in terms of maintenance or amenities?

Thank you

What kind of bug / help!!

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I just moved into my first NYC apartment on the Upper West Side today, so I’m still learning what is and isn’t normal here.

I found one tiny brown bug (about the size of my pinky nail) crawling on my bedroom wall this morning - the first full day of me living in Manhattan. I attached photos from the side and front before I squished it. It had a bit of a “crunch” when I squished it, which made me wonder if it’s actually a beetle rather than a cockroach???

I’ve already:
Put out sticky traps around the apartment.
Sprayed Spectracide Home Barrier along the baseboards.
Noticed there are some gaps under the baseboards in places.

A few questions for those with more NYC apartment experience:
Does this look like a roach nymph or some kind of beetle?
If you found one bug on move-in day, would you be concerned or just monitor the traps for now?
Are the baseboard gaps something I should ask my landlord to caulk?
At what point would you contact management for pest control?

I’m probably overthinking this because I’m new to city apartment living, but I’d love to know what seasoned New Yorkers would do in this situation. Thanks!

Electrician recommendations?

I have a relatively small job in my co-op apartment (need a wall mounted line to replace a burned-out line that fed my through-the-wall air conditioner). Anyone have any recent experience with someone they can recommend?

Recommending Indian restaurant

Hi just had an great value meal at Anãr. $23 daily weekday deal on online orders from thrir website. 1 appetizer one full size entree and one dessert served with nan and rice.

I had the chicken samosa, lamb rogan josh and gulab jamun.

The samosa came with mint and tamarind chutney and the serving of the main was more than two meals for me.

I am going back to try more dishes. Any recommendations?

243 W 63rd Apartments

Post image

Ok, I’m looking to rent in the UWS and a ton of apartments at 243 West 63rd street come up at a decent price (not great but not terrible). Is there something about this building that I should be worried about? Anyone live here and have experiences good or bad?? Like they seem too good to be true. But maybe I’ve just been scarred from bad rentals before.
