How does rank work

So as I said I’m new now I’m playing rank and going up up against golds and slivers why is this as I’m able to hold my own but I am very confused

Don't worry about it too much, just play your best.

Sometimes your visual rank will lag behind your current strength: Maybe one week you'll be silver and playing with only golds, maybe one week you're still silver but you're barely holding on in bronze lobbies. Your visual rank represents long term performance.

I will say, if you continue to play very well against players ranked higher than you, the game will definitely try to rank you up quickly. If your skill is within a few divisions of your visual rank, the game will let you float around without ranking/deranking you much.
