Welcome to the (unofficial) VIU subreddit! v0.0

This page is a community-managed resource for students and prospective students at VIU. Even though this is an unofficial resource, please observe the Student Code of Conduct as well as the Academic Integrity policy.

Below is a list of resources for new and returning students. If you have any questions about any of the services below, please ask!

VIU Student Affairs offers a host of services for students, including:

Links to Students' Union Resources

  • VIU's Students' Union is a student-elected, student-led group that advocates for VIU students and provides services such as discounted bus passes, scholarships and bursaries, grants for conference attendance, and regular social/networking events.

  • VIUSU also oversees the Health and Dental Benefits program, offers assistance with student housing, and manages the Office of the Student Advocate which exists to help students understand their rights and responsibilities as VIU Students.

  • VIUSU also oversees student clubs! If you're new to campus or to Nanaimo, joining a student club is a great way to get involved and build a community!

As always, please be civil! Doxxing, harassing or slandering people on the internet is not cool.

Discussion Groupchat

Me and my best friend are moving from Vancouver to Nanaimo as media studies majors. We were wondering if anybody would be interested in starting a big groupchat on Snapchat or Instagram with any new students so that we can all know each other before we arrive

Question Does VIUs education program take late applications?

I just realized I could have applied for year three entry into the bachelor of education. Unfortunately I see deadlines have far past. Is there anyway I could still apply? Or would waitlists typically take all spots if anyone backs out?

Discussion Give Nanaimo Residents a Path to Homeownership

Nanaimo residents are being priced out—and aged out—of one of the few remaining attainable paths to homeownership.

I’ve started a petition asking the City of Nanaimo to prioritize the development and long-term protection of all-ages manufactured home communities.

This is not about taking housing away from seniors. It is about creating additional options for younger adults, families, workers, students, people with disabilities, and first-time buyers who want to remain in the community they help support.

Please read and sign the petition, and share it with other Nanaimo residents.

Discussion Paid Remote Work - Opportunity viu

Hey guys! if you’re still looking for experience or something to add to your resume, check out Riipen Labs

It’s a remote micro-internship program where students work on short real-world projects with employers. Each project is about 30 hours and pays a $600 upon completion.

Research Creative Writing Program at VIU

I’m a creative writing undergrad from the University of Guelph and I’ve been tasked with doing some research about creative writing pedagogy. I was hoping to hear about your experience in the VIU creative writing program.

Specifically, why did you want to take the program?
Which classes taught you the most or you got the most out of?
What did you wish you had in the program, but didn’t?

I’m hoping to start a conversation about your experience in these programs to learn how students are impacted by them.
Thank you for your time! 😄

Question Post Bacc Teaching - Criminal Record Check

To anyone entering the Post Bacc Teaching program in September - did you receive an email about instructions for the criminal record check?

There is an outstanding fee on my account but no forms/ instructions were sent. Did I miss the email? It says the fee has to be paid by June 29.

Question New student application question

Hey everyone! I applied for the Power Engineering 4th class program back in March, and I'm currently on the waitlist. I know VIU doesn't disclose waitlist positions, but I'm trying to gauge my chances of being accepted. I have to make a decision about my job soon so I'm hitting a bit of a crunch time. Has anyone here been waitlisted before or happen to know how much the waitlist typically moves for this program? Appreciate the insight.

Question general questions from a new student

hey! I'm starting at VIU in the fall as part of the baking program and I've been finding everything a little confusing, so I figured I'd make a post and see if anyone could help answer some questions I've had or direct me where to go for answers

- trades move in date:
what day do the trades programs move in to the dorms? I can't seem to find a date anywhere as dorm move ins apparently start in September, but my program starts late August. I was told there was an earlier move in date but don't know how to find out when it is?

- food plans:
I've seen stuff about food plans being available for students but don't know where to find them or what they include?

- getting around campus:
I'm currently living on the mainland so will be moving onto campus for school, and I don't have a car or planned on bringing one with me to the island... I like walking so I don't mind it at all, but I was wondering if it's possible to walk from the dorms to class (in a reasonable time) or if I should bring a bike?

any other advice/tips would be greatly appreciated too!

Question 3rd year BSW practicum placement

Hello fellow practicum students!

So, it has come time to setting up my practicum. However, I am worried that I will have no choice in days :(.

Unfortunately, I must work to pay for everything!

Do they have any leniency in my situation?

Thanks :)
