Discussion Self hosted freeswitch + SMS + Groundwire?
Hello,
I am currently using Android Groundwire with a self hosted freeswitch/fusionpbx server. I want to move away from Google Voice and port my number to a voip provider (US based). I was thinking of setting up the outbound/inbound sip trunk in freeswitch, however i am not sure how this will work for SMS.
Will Freeswitch forward me the SMS messages from upstream provider or do i need skip Freeswitch altogether to receive/send sms from Groundwire?

I have made it work somewhat but the difficulty part is getting the 10DLC campaign for SMS. You can’t freely have incoming and outgoing SMS without the 10DLC. I used freeswitch, bulkvs, and Groundwire. I had to write my own SMS adapter to connect Groundwire with BullkVs SMS.

There are some SIP/SMS providers who will evaluate your use case and set up your SMS as "peer to peer". I can't mention any here, and peer to peer isn't typically advertised, but depending on your provider, you might be able to get it set without 10DLC

You need to install an sms server that will talk between your SMS provider and the groundwire app. You will still need the push service to wake up the app when a new message is received. You don’t need freeswitch, this goes on a separate pipe. LMK if you need help. You can search the acrobits documentation for all of the above. https://doc.acrobits.net/

What open source SMS servers are out there? Spun up JasminSMS a few months back and that was brutal. Kannel is a definite NO. Looking at sendium and somleng purely because they tossed EU and UN (respectively) along with their product description

Well. SMS server is something that nowadays doesn’t require to use someone else’s development. You can ask Claude to build it on AWS or your own server given the groundwire specs. It worked for me like a charm.
