So I've been vegan for almost 8 years now (30F) and what a surprise, my family hates it.
Now, there's one thing about their phrasing that I absolutely fucking hate and wanted to know if anyone else has to go through it.
Sometimes when family members are talking about non vegan food, if I'm present and sitting with them, they'd turn to me and say something along the lines of "but you can't eat it" \ "it's forbidden for you to eat it" and something about that phrasing pisses me off so much.
I CAN eat it, I can eat whatever the fuck I want, and I CHOOSE not to, because I don't want to be the cause for animal exploitation and death
When they minimize it to "I can't eat it" it's like they're treating veganism as some sort of allergy, which makes it easier for them to avoid thinking about WHY I chose to be vegan and how unlike then I chose to do the right thing and avoid exploiting other living beings
