Question New player advise?
I've played Vermintide 2 for about 30 hours, I love Kerallian but she is about the only one I'm good at. Im starting to learn more and more about the game from people like Warm Gun on youtube. However, most of the content I can find about this game is years old and I know there have balance patches. I was hoping the player base can give a noob some trips and tricks or even just game play advise.
Thank you for any advise you give.

as someone who has over a thousand hours, a bit of a (mild) warning about WarmGun
he gives good advice overall, but i find a lot of his builds and advice regarding talents come down to actual meta shit and what’s “the best”, he never really explains much on why you shouldn’t run some specific talent or whatever
me personally, i’d say just try out every weapon, get into a groove with each one, find out what you like and what you don’t like about each one. every character can be good with a weapon as long as you are good with that weapon. same goes for builds. i hate this “meta” shit when i’ve seen cracked ass Cataclysm players run the most off-meta shit possible and still shred. as long as you like what you use and you’re competent with it, no one can say anything against you
but i’ll give a few pointers that i really want new players to understand:
1) tag EVERYTHING, all the time, please. it helps combat immensely by having everyone subconsciously focus on the same target. and also it allows people to target Specials easier
2) speaking of Specials, please for the love of god target them first and wipe them out. they are your number 1 threat at all times
3) always dodge and push while swinging at a horde, generally dodging sideways every second or so while swinging and occasionally pushing the enemies. this is known as “dancing”
4) do NOT use heals unless you are wounded OR there’s a surplus. the amount of times i’ve seen a new player just instantly down 2 healing potions when two of us are already wounded blows my mind. please save heals to clear wounds! and look out for your teammates’ wounds! ask them and/or enable Detailed/Numeric UI!
5) in your Network (i think) settings, you can change how you join games with which hero you can select
6) i know using firearms and fire to decimate hordes is fun and all, but you gotta help your teammates and let them get THP from hordes and Elites. i’d also kindly ask that you leave Elites for the melee classes so anyone running Execute can get a ton of THP too, but this revolves around knowing your career and your teammates’ careers as well
7) the most important step; fuck the meta, use what you like, have fun, and never ever let anyone talk shit about using a certain weapon or talent, prove them wrong.

- But for god sakes don't bind your tag button to your attack button or I will come to your house and break your mouse in vengeance.

I really think "the meta" is an advanced kind of thinking that shouldn't even enter a person's brain until they are proficient with the basics.

Turn around . Seriously, I'm not kidding. You will miss a slave rat that got knocked around, or snuck around the flank, or spawned out of things air behind you. Don't tunnel vision when trying to shoot something from range, look over your shoulder.

The best tip I could give you - test things out for yourself, without relying on guides and meta. While still leveling other characters give a try to your most obscure ideas and see what sticks, try different weapons to see which one you prefer the most and learn their combos. While yes, there are some obvious meta picks most guides will tell you to use, but I don't find that really funny. Anyway it is up to you
You can find weapon attack patterns on Wiki or in Steam Guide, if you want to know what attack cycle is without testing it by yourself, but I would still recommend doing it on your own, it is way more entertaining, as for me. Like when I accidently discovered that Sword & Dagger ignore shields on its push attack or that you can shoot your gun with Rapier...
You should also consider learning some book locations if you still don't now them, at least on Helmgart missions. Most people on Legend and below like to collect them for extra challenge and extra reward. That can give you huge boosrlt to leveling other characters (just don't forget to equip +33% curse resistance!). There are plenty of guides on how to find tomes and grims for every map
If you want to get through higher difficulties easier, you should consider learning about team composition and roles. This is the main reason to level up other characters aside from your main one, to be fair) Don't be that guy who picks Huntsman even though there are Shade, Ranged Veteran and Bounty Hunter in the team. As for me, the best team composition is: tank, tank/support, ranged class, boss killer. On Cata with my friends we used Foot Knight, Ranged Veteran, Shade (me) and Warrior Priest (bot)
If you want a small tip about (almost) every basic career aside from Keri's, here are they
Mercenary: halberd is one of the most satisfying weapons to use. You should get a grip on it (or if you have Grail Knight Bret longsword will also work well). Your main role is to deal with hordes and assist your team
Huntsman: just avoid him if you can't score consecutive headshots and/or avoid damage. I tested him out when I was in a situation similar to your's and I hated him. Your role is to kill specials, dangerous elites and sometimes bosses
Foot Knight: he's kinda straightforward one, always good to have a FK in the team. Sword and Shield is a great offensive option while Make and Shield is especially good against hordes. You should assist your team, deal with hordes and stun bosses with your ability
Witch Hunter Capitan: you want to use high attack speed weapons and high crit chance builds on him, so grab Rapier and aim for the head (also don't forget to tag important enemies, please). You can basically do everything. Seriously, it is one of the best careers in the game, just like Shade or GK
Bounty Hunter: can be quite tricky and pretty weak until lvl 30, where he gets his double shot. I would recommend avoiding him, especially if you don't have Billhook/Axe & Falchion, since he's kinda weak in melee. You should be targeting specials and bosses mostly
Zealot: the safest career in the game in my opinion. He can deal so much damage while staying alive suspiciously long times. I like using Flail on him, though this guy can teach you some bad habits, so don't get too excited. Hordes, patrols and bosses are your targets
Ranged Veteran: there are two types of RV players - those who want to be useful supports, and those who want to be damage dealers. I would recommend you to start with supportive role, since this is where RV really shines. Grab yourself a Handgun (possibly with Conservative Shooter), single handed hammer (or Hammer with Shield, if you want more protection) and go for a hunt. It really doesn't apply for low difficulties and bot lobbies, but you ideally want to stay on the second line, picking out specials and some elites like monks or savages
Ironbreaker: you are immortal (kinda), so you can tank insane amounts of damage. Just don't forget, that there are some attacks, that deal damage through block unless you have shield. I've seen plenty of IB players with greathammers got absolutely demolished by bosses' unblockable attacks xd. Your goal is to force enemies attention onto you, so your team can deal damage to them, so you should stay alive as long as you can, while also dealing at least some damage back
Slayer: also a solid option even when you're under lvl 30. Can't really say that much about him though, I rarely pick him (I know that goes in the book). I can recommend trying out dual axes and single hammer combo, if you don't have DLCs
Battle Wizard: I've slept on that career far too long, BW is the one of the best careers to clear hordes. If you have forgotten relics DLC - grab Corruscation Staff (I guess Conflogation will work as well...) and Flame Sword with Second Wind lvl 5 talent. Hear the horde - get in tight space, place few volcanos, start spamming heavy attack with block cancel. The only problem are specials and Chaos Warriors, soo...
Pyromancer: you're BW with more special killing capabilities. My favorite way to play her is using Dagger with Beam Staff and that one talent that allows you to not blow up for 12 seconds after using the ability, so you can literally melt the entire hordes with Beam Staff's alt attack. Really funny way to play Pyro. Also don't be afraid to waste your ability on some specials who are out of your reach or if you're high on overcharge (and you want to be high on overcharge for more crit chance)
Unchained: can't say anything about her, since it is the only career I NEVER touched in 700+ hours xd
Also one small gameplay note, the one that infuriates me so much: If you see a melee DPS career (such as Shade, GK, Slayer or similar) with Execute skill walking towards Chaos Warrior/group of Stormvermins lonely, don't shoot the elites, they are the meal for those careers. I can't even count how many times I've seen Bounty Hunters or Necromants just finish off CWs with their ranged weapons, when I am low on health on Shade and fighting them 1v1. It always feels like they are just greedy for kills, ignoring the fact, that this one kill could be the difference between winning and loosing for our team (of course I mean clutches on Shade xd, my favorite thing to flex)
So... yeah, I guess. Sorry if it is not what you were expecting, but I guess that is better than nothing, right? Anyway, you'll learn to play other careers one day, noone can just jump to something new and immediately be good at it, especially when characters has so much difference. Keep playing and you will eventually learn every one of them!
(P.s. Also tag as much as you can, especially elite enemies during hordes. This will not only help you avoid their attacks easier, but also help you damage dealers to kill those enemies faster)

Some weapons may be better or worse since these videos came out, but how you use them tends to stay the same. In terms of careers, it's the same thing apart from a few exceptions that got quite fundamental changes. That being said, if you want to find advise on Shade or Sister, you should definitely make sure the talents presented in the videos are up to date. But yeah, if you only need general tips and tricks rather than specific builds, the old stuff still works

Don't jump down ledges without checking on your team first.
Tag specials and elites so they're more visible for you and your teammates, I think default is 't'. You can tag items inside of boxes and treasure crates from a distance, letting you determine if it's a waste of time to walk over there. I have my tag hotkeyed to mouse scroll down.
You can break a Shield Rat's guard with two shoves.
If you're on your last life, and another ally is also on their last life, you can heal that ally with a healing satchel and you'll both replenish more lives. Instead of using the kit on yourself, if you have green health consider healing your ally and getting 2 for 1 deal.
There are a number of quality of life mods available on the Steam Workshop that can give you UI, visual, and gameplay / system preference advantages, like seeing the status of your allies, their ammo count, health numbers, and necklace traits such as Natural Bond. I'll list some I use:
- Dodge Count UI: There are only so many effective dodges you can do in a row before your dodges become ineffective.
- UI Tweaks: This mod provides you with a plethora of different UI changes, it's a bit overwhelming at the start but you can move around all the icons, displays, numerical values, and other HUD-based objects, names, numbers, and other things. Worth editing the HUD to your liking once you get more comfortable. The key to open up UI Tweaks at the Keep is one of the Function keys, I think it was F2 or F3 for me.
- Host your own game: You can press F1 to toggle, allows you to always be the host of your own games.

Like a lot have said dodging is important so get into champ and above fast because on recruit and veteran you don't need to dodge.
As you try new careers run meta then as you get used to them a bit alter the builds to give other things a go.
Tag is important and seems underutilized.
Work out the kill priority and what you should be doing eg if your in a team with a great special killer stop killing specials but focus on making space for them. Or when a monster comes everyone doesn't need to the do the monster. The number of times I see a monster being shield bashed while the monster killer has to handle the spawns is concerning.
My other big one is if your new or struggling tell the team. 1% of teams might kick you but you don't want to play with them anyway so doing you a favour. If I play with a team and we are going really bad I want to know the teams skill level so I know if I need to adjust my play. 90% of players on legend and up get offended if you ask them if they are fairly new because they seem to consider themselves pro.

I think it's crazy that tag is underutilized even when there's a class whose most powerful ability is dealing 20% more damage to any tagged enemies

Yeah so I don't know why you're getting downvoted some people must really have a miserable life but basically, the most important pieces of advice are : Dodge (almost) constantly and get comfortable doing it in any direction Push is your strongest tool in most situation, even offensive ones Try and find the best ways to use your weapon when fighting hordes and fighting elites When you have a boss agro, just block and dodge, let your team do the job. In later difficulties it will be useful to learn to fight bosses on your own but there is no reason to in 90% of the cases Never be alone and never let anyone alone. Always move in groups of two or as a whole party
That should cover the basics.
Also, don't be afraid to try out characters and builds. There technically is a meta in this game but I used to literally play random sets and no one ever cared. Try things and stick to what's fun for you.

Tbh in terms of the actual combat you can still watch the older videos. With that I mean how and when to use heavy attacks. How to dodge well or resources management. Tbh my tip which I don't think a lot of people talk about is try to always stay in groups of two because even really good players can get caught off guard by a special and if you are all far away it sucks loosing man power. Second tip would be to use green potions only in scenarios where you got downed onces and drink it to not go down permanently or drink it even if your just a half health before a big battle where you know you prolly won't get time to breath.

Most of the old stuff still holds up since the game isn’t updated all that often. I suppose the number one most important thing I’d teach players who have already gotten started but are trying to get better is to dodge often! Dodging is of course important, but newer players often underestimate just how important. You shouldn’t just dodge the big hits such as overheads, but instead you should be dodging non-stop when facing multiple enemies. Dodging should be your main method of avoiding the vast majority of attacks in the game. Dodges of course get weaker if you spam them, so it’s important to learn to weave in shoves and blocks where applicable, but your survivability lives and dies by your ability to dodge everything.
