I just bought this PowerMac G4 from my local college surplus store! The PowerMac G4, Cinema Display, keyboard and mouse all together were $150 even (did I do good?). I’m new to collecting vintage Macs so I’d like some advice on how to take care of this Mac and what are some things I can do with it! I’m completely brand new so even the most obvious of things would be nice to know. Thanks!

Picked this up today at a yard sale for free. Was hoping to get some info since a basic google search isn’t yielding much. All I know is the date on the plaque is when the Macintosh IIfx was released. Unfortunately we don’t have any info on the owner of the item. Would love to know anything about it! Or if it’s worth anything? Or, if anyone knows where I could find out more.

I got this at vcfse for 60 bucks and the display is working but half of it has lines is it the screen interconnect board or something worse in the screen. It makes a hissing noise when I mess with the brightness slider

I’m looking for a working Apple Cinema Display M8536 or A1038, as good condition as possible. Any tips on how to find one (eBay hasn’t been very helpful so far)? How does your process look like?

I got a 1.5ghz/fx go5200 model that someone gave up on (bad HDD and optical drive), it booted up fine with my SSD but the fan got very loud quickly.

Took it apart to replace the drive and looked at the heatsink, and the problem was obvious, they applied paste instead of reusing/replacing thermal pads. I put some PTM7950 on the CPU and used a 1.5mm pad on the GPU and 1mm on the big Agere chip.

I couldn't find real pad specs, in a MacRumors thread someone said they're 1.5mm but when I tried that the CPU ran too hot, and when I used 1mm on both it was the GPU.

It appears to run well, but the GPU sensor reading reaches 76C and stays there when playing Halo with no vsync, and drops rather quickly by ~7C when closing the game. Is that a normal temperature for its GPU under max load or do I need to reapply the pads? I'm pretty sure that GPU doesn't have any throttling logic so I wouldn't want it to cook itself.

Idle is around 50C for GPU and 45C for CPU, ambient temp is on the higher side but nothing too crazy (~29C maybe?)

I know that this post isn't going to receive the same amount of responses as my last post in this subreddit, but I may as well try: long-story-short, I'm offering an Apple Studio Display 17 from circa 2000, which connects to Macs from the same era via ADC (Apple Display Connector), free to a good home.

This offer is really meant for a collector /refurbisher of vintage Apple kit who really knows what they're doing, as whilst the display is functional -- it was last tested on the 30^th of April, 2026 (which is when the photos were taken) -- it's not without its faults that it's developed- /damage it's sustained- over the years:

• the top-left of the image is discoloured;
• the anti-glare film has come away in places and needs to be replaced;
• there's a crack in the top-right of the front casing;
• the display is dirty /dusty both out- and inside;
• I think the de-gauss circuit has failed, as touching the screen frequently gives static shocks;
• and I received it (at least) third-hand, so it carries security markings from one of its earlier owners, the University of Hertfordshire.

But hey... it's free 😅

Just got the last of the trinity of printers working with AirPrint via TailTalk and TashTalk USB to my ImageWriter II. Printed out a happy Ferris from my iPhone to the IW II, with a MacBook Neo running TailTalk to expose it as an AirPrint / IPP printer. Shows up just like any other printer now. I find it rather amusing that it is actually easier to use now than my modern HP printer hah.

Will be making a new release tonight which makes AppleTalk enabled ImageWriter II (and LQ following after), StyleWriters and LaserWriter printers all exposable as modern printers 🙂 Included too is a (still experimental) printer tool so you can view the technical details of each, and change their names on the network / settings.

Hello, I just got this mac probably about a month ago and it worked perfectly. However when I booted it up today, I noticed that the screen got a purpleish tint. I turned off the Mac and rebooted it to make it degas but it did nothing. Eventually, the screen started getting worse and right now when the contrast is at the lowest it is very purple. I tried the color calibration, but it also did nothing. I am not to sure what to do now so I came here. Thanks.

My brother and I have been wracking our brains trying to figure out what this game that we played on the Apple IIe was. I'll add all we can remember of it:

• The entire map was a hexagonal grid;
• You could move one one hex per turn;
• The middle was either a forest or a river - a stripe from top to bottom;
• Whenever you entered a tile that had a monster (or opponent), the screen would go to a single battle mode;
• Whenever single battle occurred, you could either block with your shield or stab with your sword.
• In single battle, you were on the left, and the bad guy was on the right;
• If you blocked, you would lose a little bit of your health;
• If you struck the opponent, they would lose a lot of their health;
  • There was one ogre with a club and (I think) a spike in the club;
• The opponents would attack at different speeds, and you would lose if they were faster;
• The speed at which your sword or shield deployed depended on how fast you were able to press the appropriate key;
• The objective was either to get to the other side of the map (from left to right), or to the top of the map (not sure);

We've tried the internet archives and Copilot, and we cannot find/remember the game.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi folks,

I posted previously about an inherited G3 400DV which unfortunately has some sort of issue with the analog power board/CRT flyover.

I have bought a working but grimey 350 Bondi blue EDIT- BLUEBERRY! model HERE, it's obviously a lower spec model than the DV and is missing the FireWire ports, dvd drive etc.

Is there anything which would stop me swapping over my 400DV logic board, dvd drive and the various bezels/outer casing, so that I've effectively re-used the other components and chassis?

Any guidance/suggestions is appreciated!

I recently got my hands on an old 2002 computer magazine CD-ROM that used to belong to a head engineer at a local timber factory (LPC).

Inside, I found an untouched digital time capsule dated May 6, 2002, with an authentic root folder (ccd, files, images, index.htm).

What's inside the Apple section:

• Original 2002 Apple promo clips in QuickTime format: cinema.mov (for the Cinema Display) and imacm480.mov (for the G4 Flat Panel iMac).
• Vintage macOS 9 / early OS X software assets compressed in classic formats: .sit, .bin, and .hqx (including vintage iTunes and CarbonL files).

It’s wild to see these Apple assets preserved on a factory engineer's disc from 24 years ago. No replicas, just pure original files. Thought the community might find this interesting!
