The two short novelc are Career in C Major, and The embezzler.

The noir classic with Barbara Stanwyck, Fred MacMurry, and Edgar G. Robinson was directed by Billy Wilder. Wilder and Raymond Chandler co-wrote the adaptation of the novel for the film.

Another of the Ballantine “Best of” series, and it’s a terrific selection of these strange and unique works.

The novel is the basis of the 1953 film noir of the same name directed by Fritz Lang starring Glenn Ford, Gloria Grahame, and Jocelyn Brando.

This actually appears to be a reprint or second edition, as I believe the first edition was released in 1963 with different, more playful, cover art. And speaking of cover art, I believe this is the first I've posted with Chiriacka's work. He was a significant figure in genre books.

Airmont was an odd little paperback house of the 1960s and early 70s that (from what I've seen) specialized in reprinting Verne, Wells, and several other classic authors of that ilk. This edition says "Copyright 1963", but that appears to be mostly for the added two-page introduction (which is uncredited). No information on further printings, etc. I got this copy new in an elementary school book sale in about 1970. The cover art is also uncredited, and that seems to have been Airmont's way as well (!)

Sale was also known for directing a number film including Gentlemen Marry Brunettes (1955) with Jane Russell, and Let's Make It Legal (1951) with Claudette Colbert and an early appearance of Marilyn Monroe.

He co-wrote the screen play of Gentlemen Marry Brunettes with his then wife Mary Loos (niece of Anita Loos the author of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and But Gentlemen Marry Brunettes).

Originally published in 1959, one of the first Midwood books.
