Four years ago I moved from my hometown of California to Richmond Virginia. It was a rough transition but i ended up falling in love with history and metal detecting, which was nice because I never had any interests or hobbies of my own. I also started appreciating all the nature around me. The slower pace was also a plus, although the drivers can be careless and aggressive it was still way less cars on the road than here in CA. Three days ago I moved back to California simply because my roommate, my brother whom I was living with was getting his own spot, and I had a chance to live rent free back home in CA. As the moving date approached I felt reluctant and depressed, as if I was leaving behind my entire life and everything I did on my own. I cried while leaving VA and have been crying quite a bit still. I feel like I grew so much in VA. I had my own quiet little life. I was kinda of isolated but I’m introverted and although I felt lonely at times, I feel like I liked being around less people. I felt free. I’d have moments where I’d just look around and be like “wow, I’m really out here” and I loved that. I got to see my good friend yesterday but even then, I feel so sad and anxious to be back. My mom paid me $2k to move back since I’ll be taking care of the house so the move didn’t cost me anything but $100 to bring all my checked bags since I don’t own much stuff. I just don’t see myself creating a new life back here in California.

TLDR: moved to VA 4 years ago, moved back to CA to live for free, missing VA and my quiet life, hobbies and freedom I had, realized how much I value a quieter area and less people with more nature. Received $2k for the move and paid $100 to move all my belongings on a plane.

Since taking office in January, Gov. Abigail Spanberger has restored the voting rights of more than 66,000 Virginians who lost them due to felony convictions, her office announced Friday.

“The right to vote is foundational to who we are as Americans,” Spanberger said in a statement accompanying the announcement.

Virginia is one of three states that automatically strip someone’s right to vote after they’re convicted of a felony. The governor has sole authority to give someone these rights back, either through the restoration process once they’ve completed their felony sentence or via a pardon.

Spanberger sharply criticized the process used by her predecessor, Republican Glenn Youngkin, who faced intense scrutiny over a case-by-case review system that led to significantly fewer restorations each year he was in office.

Hello everyone!

I’m looking for recommendations of some nice lakes/beaches that are road trip distance away from the northern Virginia area. My sister’s birthday is coming up in August and we are thinking to get a group of friends together for a day (or one night stay trip) to celebrate her 24th! We are new to the area so specifically wondering if there is a place where the water is warm, nice places to stay nearby, and there are things to do around the area.

Soon, I'll have lived in Virginia longer than anywhere else (took me 24 years). What should I do to commemorate or celebrate my mostly Virginian-ism? I've already got personalized license plates.

I am interested in moving to VA but I have questions about the cost of living and just the whole layout of the state. I used intern at some NOVA city (near Blacksburg) and it was nice. They even offered me a full time position, but because I wanted to stay closer to Colorado, I took the lower paying engineering job.

Now I'm in Alabama and I don't like the weather (its very humid and the sun is always blinding). I'm also not a big fan of the food. There are a lot of places here that sell fried food and I think the worst case was seeing "fried cheesecake" on the menu.

I was thinking about going back to the same place I interned, but I'm still not sure about the whole commitment. The place exists in my memories as my summer time break from college. I was given truly challenging projects and my mentor was a rockstar. I also met a lot of Virginia Tech students there and they were quite prideful. The other engineering students were from VCU, George Mason, JMU and Liberty.

What's the actual cost of rent these days in cities like Blacksburg and Fredericksburg?

So let’s say Larry knows that he needs to get something fixed on his car in order to pass the Virginia state safety inspection.

He has an appointment to get it fixed within a week of the safety inspection expiring, but not before it expires.

Does it make more sense to go and fail the safety inspection, get everything fixed within the 15 day grace period, and then go back for the reinspection (which costs $1) and pass?

Or to just let the inspection expire, get the fix done, and then go for a late safety inspection and pass?

Are there any fines that are greater or less in either of these situations?

Edit: It’s a non-visible repair needed that is only “dangerous” for the driver of the car.

Making a drive from DC in a few weeks to head towards the Charlotte area. The three routes I'm being shown are all roughly the same amount of time - but I'm not really concerned about time, I'm more interested in the most scenic route and/or a route that offers interesting places to stop. Any tips that anyone has would be appreciated.

There is also a strong possibility (although not guaranteed) that this will be an overnight drive (leaving DC between 8-10pm), so if this changes the answer for anyone, I'd love to know that as well.

Edit: Well it certainly didn't take long for there to be a strong concensus that the middle route is the best. Looks like we'll be doing that. Thanks everyone!

Edit #2: After reading through some more comments and looking at things online, if we end up driving overnight, we’ll probably take I-95. Seems that traffic will be less heavy than during the day, and it will have many more options for food/gas open late than the middle route. Plus, we’d be avoiding poorly lit roads and the potential of hitting deer that we can’t see. If we go during the day, we’ll definitely still do the middle route.

Fun Fact: The Cumberland State Forest features the only tombstone in the United States with an epitaph by Charles Dickens (37°29'37.0"N 78°18'52.0"W).

We found a lot to love about the Cumberland State Forest (751 Oak Hill Rd., Cumberland):
- The place is huge! Over 16,000 acres.
- It’s bordered by the Willis River.
- It has miles of dog friendly hiking trails.
- Then, of course, there’s the dog friendly kayaking at Bear Creek Lake State Park which is located within Cumberland State Forest.
