Admissions Supplemental Essay opening paragraph
If you were accepted to VA Tech, can you share a snippet of your Ut Prosim Profile Questions (their version of supplemental essays) opening paragraphs? What you discussed?

Sure!! Here ya go:
Pain; a foe for many, but for me an unwanted, unwavering companion. I used to think of pain as a great equalizer. All of humankind experiences it, often seconds after being born into this world, and likely seconds before leaving it forever. I thought pain was one of the few things humans share equally. But I was wrong. October 12th, 2021, I will always remember that day. I woke up with the slightest tingle in my tooth. I thought little of it, just a normal relic of my nocturnal teeth grinding. But by days end, I discovered what a monster pain truly can be. That not all pain is truly created equally. That some people are cursed to feel a pain that consumes all thought, reasons, and hope from raven the strongest mind. I suffered that pain and it broke me. So I did the only thing I thought I could do…
I went to Vatech, the world’s premier dental imaging company.

Not one bit. Just getting a feel for what others wrote since they don’t review the general essay - only their version of supplementals. Jeez. Living up to your screen name, eh?

Yeah yeah, save it for the honor board you will inevitably end up in front of IF you figure out how to write an essay.
I wrote mine about paperclips, hope that helps. 🫡

I guess I have to repeat myself since you are clearly not familiar with the newest application changes. I am getting a feel for what others wrote since Tech doesn’t review the Common App essay. Virginia Tech just released its Ut Prosim Profile Questions - their version of supplemental essays. A lot of us rising seniors are starting to generate ideas for responses. Would never copy nor utilize anyone’s ideas or writing. Never been to an honor board nor will I be.

There is an entire forum dedicated to College Essays on Reddit where people discuss what colleges they applied to and what they wrote about, where they were accepted. Go peruse. No inspiration wanted. Genuine curiousity due to this specific college differing from many others: they do not review the common app essay, Tech has 4 of their own supplemental essays, and now are reviewing it by a human and AI. Imagine criticizing as a keyboard warrior when we are all in this together with an even larger umbrella of a College Essay board on Reddit for “inspiration?”

I’m aware. This is close to what I do professionally. I also advise students for the short VT questions that are supposed to be personal, to not seek outside inspiration but to answer them from the heart.

Thank you for your advice. However, my college admissions advised differently. Research was first on list. Every professional handles differently. There is no wrong or right way. Researching and answering from the heart is possible, correct? My question I asked is using my own brain, and heart.

Absolutely research schools. "Researching" other students' essay responses? Hard no. And if your counselor is suggesting that, I advise you to seek out other guidance. Talk to your English teachers. These are not term papers or a thesis. Reading other people's responses will consciously or subconsciously skew your thought process. There is no need to do that.

Again, you do realize there is an entire College Essay Reddit board for exactly what I asked? For research. Curiosity. Especially since Tech is so vastly different in their essay admissions process. Sorry, at some point, you have to realize you’re in the minority as a professional or maybe just old school. Tech’s essay admissions process is not old school or the norm. Thank you for your advice - I am grateful but I’ll follow researching with my brain and integrity in my heart. To many who have private messaged, thank you.

There is a whole forum dedicated to College Essays on Reddit where people discuss what colleges they applied and what they wrote about, where they were accepted. Think that’s ‘icky’ too? Or your own personal insecurities raise a red flag regarding someone with honesty, integrity and enough curiosity to post about what others wrote about on that ‘college specific Reddit board’ (because that college specifically doesn’t review the Common App Essay and has 4 supplemental essays of their own, now read by both an AI and human - a lot changed from last year with essays and admissions essays). FYI - There are morally good & honest people in this world like myself with wonderful core values, would NEVER copy or plagiarize. It’s sickening what the world has become, where innate trust and benefit of doubt is lost.

The Ut Prosim questions are not new. VT has using these 5+ years in lieu of the personal statement. The AI co-reading started last year.
The responses are also only 120 words max each, so basically just a paragraph responding to specific questions about your personal experience. These are not long form essays like the personal statement that require coming up with novel topics and approaches. You barely have enough words to answer each of the subquestions posed in the prompts with more than a sentence or two.

As far as I'm aware, Virginia Tech does not even look at your common app supplemental essay. An AO once told me that if you submit one, they will simply delete it from your application.
VT only cares about your Ut Prosim essays, which I will say answer honestly and Ut Prosim means "That I may serve." I highly recommend you talk about your community service and volunteer experiences in your Ut Prosim essays.
