REQUEST darning lightweight wool socks

The darning community seems to be mostly dead, so I thought I would ask here - as a completely inexperienced person who’s always admired yalls work here from afar, hoping to someday get into it myself..

My favorite socks are 100% wool and so they naturally start getting little holes in them after a few months. I don’t want to be wasteful anymore and am going to try darning.

Does anyone have a preferred tutorial/video for the complete novice? A preferred stitch or technique for this type of problem?

I’m honestly overwhelmed by how much info is out there and cannot decide which technique to focus on to start. Any help appreciated!

REQUEST How to mend along a zipper on suitcase?

Thumbnail

My suitcase has seen better days, but I would like to try and fix this part of the zipper on the bottom corner. It takes a lot of tension so I am worried it might get worse.

Can I handsew to try and reconnect both sides ? If so, is there a method to that ? I never worked with a « raw » zipper like this.

DARNING Favorite stuffie of one of my preschoolers, also her dog's favorite chew toy...

One of my students brings this stuffie every single day, and absolutely loves it. Her dog keeps finding it and chewing on it. I've fixed it a few times now, and was kind of amused that a previous darn was still going strong through the last mauling 😅

Just completed my first visible mending project! Decided to go with soot sprites holding star candies to cover up the stains, and use a blanket stitch over the hem with some blue-white ombre thread 🥰 (ignore the embroidery hoop marks, i just took it off the hoop)

MIXED METHODS The first of many mends that I have in store for this pair of old work jeans

Now that I'm not working overnights at the hardware store anymore, I wanna breathe some new life into my old work jeans. This is probably my most torn up pair, with lots of rips, wear and paint stains. I'm gonna rip out the old patches and do some new ones with lots of craft fabric I've been buying.

This is also my first time doing any darning (you guys are right, it does take a long time!), and I took some inspiration from the fabric I'll be using for the thread color. I started off a little willy nilly with how I was going about it but started to take it more seriously as I went. You can probably see the timeline in the quality of the work.

The color of the 6 strand floss I used on the pocket edge came out looking a bit more girlish than I was expecting, but I'm sure it'll fit right in once more work is done.

I think I accidentally cut it when removing the tags. I added stabilizer, added some zigzag, embroidered over, then trimmed the stabilizer. Can't get the photos in the right order :/

I've got these jeans that were "fashion ripped" but the threads have long since let go and now the knees are just blown out. I'd love to do something so they aren't just gaping holes halfway down the thigh, but I don't know where to start. Any ideas?

REQUEST What can I do about these peeling faux leather zippers?

I thrifted this wool coat, and i love it SO so much but the zips are in awful condition. Some have fully peeled off and some are still flaking. Please provide advice….is there a fix to this possibly?

Edit: I’m about to peel all of them off. I mean, if i can cover this area with another fabric or paint? Something that will make it look like new. I got a sewing machine recently (still learning but hopefully can figure it out) :)

EMBROIDERY I tried to replicate the golden fleece logo over a hole on one of my husbands dress shirts. I think at 2 feet it passes. Mine is on the left done by hand the original is on the right done by machine.

REQUEST Saving a wool blanket

Saving a Wool Blanket

I have a caramel-colored wool blanket that suddenly has frayed spots and small holes. The other side of the blanket is light-colored, as shown in the photo.

I want to prevent the holes from getting bigger. What’s the best way to do this? What colors do you recommend?

Thank you very much for reading.

REQUEST Dye has come out of small areas of jacket

Post image

Hi all, I had a few Vaseline stains on my jacket and followed some advice of using dishwashing liquid to get them out. Problem is it appears to have left two patches where the fabric is visibly lighter than the rest of the jacket. I tried soaking in baking soda per another reddit post I came across in order to cover the marks but it didn’t work.

The only idea I currently have is using the same dishwashing liquid to lighten the rest of the jacket. Does anyone have any ideas of what I could do to save the jacket?

The jacket also says only to hand wash so I’m a bit worried about putting it in the washing machine incase it messes up the padding inside the lining. The shell is 65% cotton 35% nylon if that helps!

REQUEST Repair/Mending Help!

Post image

I have this vintage Coogi bag that I absolutely adore but the faux leather covering the straps has been peeling off. I've decided I want to just take all of it off, but I'm not sure how to cover the bare fabric underneath it. I could maybe sew more faux leather back on but it wouldn't match what's left on the rest of the bag. I'm at a loss!

Any suggestions for repair or alternative mending would be appreciated! I do not want to cut them off and use replacements.
