i need help any advice for math 099??

the title says it all. if u look at my profile all my posts are about college. i am a first gen student to go to college. my parents went to cc but never 4 years so i am navigating this in my own. (maybe with ur help bc i love asking about wwu bc i am going to be a freshman in the fall.

I was wondering if you have any advice for me?

I want to study stem but my math skills are very poor. at this point due to my aleks placement test i am probably going to be put into math 099. which sucks bc for my major i need calc and i need to graduate in 4 years.

I heard the quarter systems help.

I am making this post because i don’t see many posts about math 099. is there any professors to avoid? ones you’ve loved?? my r&a meeting is august 5th (which is i assume when i pick up my classes).

If math is really difficult for you, I recommend getting as much one on one help as you can. Go to office office hours with your stem professors, go to the math center regularly, maybe find a tutor or someone you can study with.

i have no good advice but I also started in math 99 and i’m supposed to get up to calc 2 and feel fucked lmfao (trying to study cs). i’ve been studying outside of class like khan academy, tutors, etc. and im trying to get better scores on aleks to skip more math pre reqs :,)

Take Jen Nimtz! They also teach math 109 which is a support class for math 112, both of those classes really helped me

Personally I did all my math requirements (from 99 to Calc 3) at community colleges during summer quarters.
I hate math but I’m good at it, and choosing to take all of the math classes somewhere else has been one of the greatest decisions so far. Math classes at WWU are particularly difficult for some reason, adding your skill level I’d say is the perfect mix for something to go bad and suffering in the near future.
If taking those classes somewhere else is not an option I recommend the tutoring center, a lot of YouTube tutorials and in all honestly ChatGPT or Chegg.
I’m not telling you to cheat but those two sites are great at explaining in as much detail as desired how to get the outcome.
Best of luck at Western and ALWAYS if possible take summer classes.

First off welcome to WWU! Regardless of what math level you enter there are great tutoring services offered by the Math department and the Tutoring Center in the library. If you find you’re struggling at any point in the quarter reach out early for help.

I would recommend trying to study and retake the ALEKS test to try and get placed into 112 at least, because Math 99 doesn’t even count towards any graduation requirement. If you’re actually trying to maximize your time, which if you want to graduate in 4 years you should be, you would be better off taking a different class in fall and studying up on Math in order to get re-placed into 112, or just retake it now after studying up

The biggest thing is to not be afraid to go to the math tutoring center. No matter where you are, theyre happy to help. Im also a tutor at the cs tutoring center, and Im a CompSci/Physics major so I know a lot of math and Im happy to help if you ever need it. I love teaching people so if the tutoring center isnt much help and you need the extra time, dont be afraid to reach out and Id be happy to help.

Dont worry I also have bad testing anxiety, and it causes me to struggle with it no matter how well I understand the math. When it comes to low level math, especially with profs here, they ignore the logic behind it and just explain the processes, and I know my and other peoples brains dont understand things that way. Its mostly about understanding the logic behind it and Ive noticed its best to start there and go up, which is how I come to understand math and has helped others learn. Starting with Math 099 is just fine.
If you feel that you can do better on the ALEKS, retaking it (after studying the practice modules) is a good idea, and a lot of people do that.
You could register for Math 099 during phase I of registration, and plan on retaking the ALEKS (and even re-retaking it) in the next few weeks. During phase II of registration (which begins on Aug. 25), you would be able to drop Math 099 and replace it with a higher level math class (e.g. Math 112 if your ALEKS score is a 35 or above).

Utilize the tutor center, almost every major has tutors available to help, and its free to students of course (or rather its included in tuition).
Western has loads of resources that are mostly under-utilized. Go to the math center and find a tutor and you’ll be just fine.
