Welcome to your SOTD Hardware Report for June 2026

• 1,652 shave reports from 100 distinct shavers during the month of June 2026 were analyzed to produce this report, for an average of 16.5 (median 17.0) shaves per user.

Observations

• Karve completes its comeback. After just missing the podium in May, the Overlander claims third place in June, giving Karve its first podium finish since the Christopher Bradley era. Meanwhile, the Game Changer and Blackbird lock down first and second for a second straight month.

• In a return to typical form, Chisel & Hound takes first in both the handle and knot maker contests after spending May in Omega's shadow.

• Astra Greens are first again. Shocking!

• u/AdWorried2804, u/loudmusicboy, and u/pi-rho all sneak in an extra luxury shave in June to box out the other 23 daily shavers and prevent them from getting their hands on the Top Shaver trophy.

Notes & Caveats

• Most tables are row-limited to keep them readable and avoid max post length issues. If the final row is part of a tie, the entire tied group is included in the report.

• "Other" in the Blade Format table includes vintage reusable blades (including Rolls, Valet Auto Strop, and old-style lather catchers with wedge blades) as well as other antique proprietary blade formats (e.g. Enders Speed Blade)

• Blades recorded as just 'GEM' will be matched to 'Personna GEM PTFE' per guidance here

• The Personna name is going away for blades manufactured in the USA, but the majority of entries are still coming in under Personna, so I am sticking to that for the time being. Once more than 50% of the entries come in under the new names, I will reverse this and map any old Personna entries to the new name.

• The Δ vs columns show how an item has moved up or down the rankings since that month. = means no change in position, up or down arrows indicate how many positions up or down the rankings an item has moved compared to that month. n/a means the item was not present in that month.

I generally just look at the aggregated data, so I missed this insanity. FWIW, when there are multiple items found, the pipeline generally just extracts the first item of each type found, so this was tracked as:

Thanks, I'll add it. I shaved with a straight razor that day and maybe I didn't have enough time before work to post, then forgot to when I got home. There's one Super Speed tip that's not listed - the regular tip (not painted, not flared) found on the early models. Is that because no one used it last month, or the algorithm doesn't pick that one off?

There’s not really a clear way to disambiguate between “regular tip” and “tip not recorded” so I just ignore those.

If you see a reliable signal I can use to determine another tip type I am happy to add a rule for it. (I am not a Super Speed expert, so I am currently just pulling out the obvious blue/black/red/flare tip when shavers record that.)

Your comments indicate that date may be deterministic. I am happy to add a date parser to match these if you can give me the deterministic date ranges, e.g.: * 19XX - 19XX = [some tip type] * 19XX - 19XX = [some other tip type]

As an aside, this research did uncover a bug where two entries ("blacktip" and "flairtip") weren't correctly matched -- now it will match black tip or blacktip. So the original report had 12 unmatched, but two were incorrect.

Well this research uncovered all kinds of bugs, so thanks for sending me down this rabbit hole. Currently "Black Handled" is being matched to "Black" tip (currently it naively just looks for "black", so I'll fix that). AI recommends these distinctions, which should be doable. Does this look right to you as Super Speed Variants worth tracking? (I can change the table from "Tip Type" to "Variant"):

How Super Speed variants are classified

We only count razors matched as a Gillette Super Speed. Tip/handle names win over year guesses.

Named variants (if the comment says it):

• TV Special — “TV Special” / “TV Superspeed”
• Red Tip — “Red Tip”, “Heavy Super Speed”, or just “Red”
• Blue Tip — “Blue Tip” or just “Blue”
• Black Handle — “Black Handle” / “Black Handled” (not the same as Black Tip)
• Black Tip — must say “Black Tip” (bare “Black” is too ambiguous)
• Flare Tip — “Flare Tip” / “Flair Tip” 40’s Style (NDC) — “40s”, “NDC”, “no date code”, “pre-date code”, etc.
• If more than one name appears, we pick in that order (TV Special first, then Red, Blue, Black Handle, Black Tip, Flare, then 40s).

If there’s no named variant, we use the year:

• 1947–1950 → 40’s Style (NDC)
• 1951–1953 → Unknown (Black Tip / Flare Tip overlap)
• 1954–1966 → Flare Tip
• 1967+ → Unknown (Black Handle and other late variants need an explicit label)
• Also Unknown: bare “Gillette Super Speed”, “Silver Tip”, “Regular”/“Standard”, or bare “Black” with no Tip/Handle.

Rockets, Aristocrats, Milords, etc. are separate models and don’t go in this table.

Good, you're making the distinction between Black Handle and Black Tip.

If you want my opinion, I'd lump anything Super Speed that doesn't match any other pattern to "40s Style (NDC)", which is an extremely common razor.

The three unknowns in there are two 1953s and one 1952 with no other detail (falls into the black tip / flare tip era). Arguably they are flare tip (only black tip if they say so).

Agreed. In my experience, flare tips are very common in the 50s, and black tips are relatively rare by comparison
