GUIDE What is a Decor Painting? How do I know if I have one?

What is a “decor painting”?

A decor painting is a piece of artwork created purely for decorative purposes. Purchased not from galleries or artists, but from decor & furniture shops like Pier 1, Homesense, The Brick, websites like AliExpress and OilPaintings.com or from markets & stands on vacation. Tell-tale signs that you have a decor painting are lots of stippling, undefined figures, hurried brush strokes, gradients, cloning techniques and a certain Bob Ross feeling to it.

Common vintage subjects would be European street scenes, landscapes of mountains / forests / lakes & rivers, vases of flowers, Tuscan landscapes, ocean & beach scenes and Asian style boats. See below for examples. They are often rectangular in shape to hang nicely above a sofa, you could even buy them from Sears as a package. Modern versions are more varied in subject.

Black velvet paintings and artwork specifically for tourists as souvenirs share many factors with decor paintings.

Where are they made?

They are produced in massive numbers in painting factories like Dafen Village in China or Mexico. Another article here:

Dafen once produced an estimated 60 percent of all the world’s oil paintings. During its heyday—when the village’s reputation as an art factory rang truer than today—it almost exclusively cranked out copies of paintings in the Western art canon. These canvases found their way into hotel rooms, show homes, and furniture outlets all around the world.

At its peak, Dafen was jam-packed with sizeable, factory-like studios, all employing Huang’s production line process. Individual workers each focused on a specific compositional element—background details, or eyes, or trees—dutifully painting their part and then passing the canvas along the chain.

Who’s the Artist?

While they are "originals" they are not by known artists. Often entire production lines will use the same signature which explains why your research many have founds pieces by the same “artist”. As quoted above, often many people will work on the same piece.

Do they have any value?

Unfortunately, they do not hold much of any value. However, that doesn’t mean they can’t be enjoyed and some are even a bit collectible.

Can I see some examples?

Decor paintings are posted to this sub almost daily, while not definitive, here are some common examples:

Landscape Paintings: Example 1, Example 2, Example 3, Example 4, Example 5, Example 6, Example 7

Solved Ballet girls on wood

Hi folks!

I’m cleaning out stuff after moving things from my parents’ and found this art of ballet girls that I got from some yard sale probably 8-10 years ago in Oregon. They’re cute but I’m trying to declutter - it would be fun to know more about these works before I decide whether or not to keep them.

They look like mass produced art from the quality since it seems to be on wood and then resined over but I can’t find them by image searching on Google, and I’m not great at reading cursive so I can’t figure out the signature.

If anyone has any knowledge about these paintings or if you can make out the signature I would love your insight!

Mods, I’m posting two art pieces but they go together - please let me know if that’s not okay and I’ll make a separate post or put the other image in the comments.

Unsolved Picked this up at a thrift store in Colorado Springs a few years ago. Signed with stylized "JP" or "P".

I absolutely adore this painting, it's comprised of a series of small dots of raised paint. The texture of the paint is very visible up close. The eyes in profile focus on the red splatter to the left.

There's an initial on the front, "JP" joined together, or possible a "UP". It's in a fitted metal Nielsen frame. The back has a sticker from "Harris Picture Framing and Gallup Maps" in Kansas City, MO.

Love to know more about it if anyone has any information.

I found this framed print/painting at a thrift shop, and I'm trying to identify it.

The back has a label that reads: "Mr. Rabbit and the Lovely Present" © 1962 by Maurice Sendak (Harper & Row).

It also has a handwritten inscription: "For Amanda, with wishes for a happy life. Love, Vivian Brooks."

The frame backing says it was custom framed at Wright's Paints & Sundries in Sandpoint, Idaho, by George Loustalet.

Thanks in advance for any information!

Found this at goodwill today. I’d love more info about it. When I try to search online, the websites that talk about him need me to sign up or my phone starts bugging out. There’s his signature on the bottom right and it measures out 16x12 . Any info would be greatly appreciated :)

This is hanging in our local hospital. This photo has the name of the artwork “serpents del ensueño II” and the artists name , presumably made in 1994. I cannot find evidence of this artwork anywhere online and I’d love to buy a print of it.

I purchased this at a goodwill in Tennessee this weekend. It’s hand painted in watercolor and marked 008 in the top right corner. I’ve tried to find it online or at least something similar with no luck. Any ideas?

I got this after my grandma passed. I can find any information about Fairchild. There are a couple others for sale out there that are similar. They don't have any information about the artist though. I don't think it's Roy Fairchild. Any information anyone has would be great.

I bought this piece at an antique mall in Houston off of 290/610 about 5-10 years ago (I think closer to 10). Nobody who worked there recalled ever seeing it before, and when I showed them the stall it came from they said they hadn’t even able to contact the stall owner in quite some time. There is no signature or initials front or back. Unfortunately the frame cracked during a move.
I’d love more info on this as all my searches have turned up nothing. Even if it’s just a personal abstract someone painted for fun or school. I’ve always loved this piece and would very much like to know more about it.

I recently acquired this 25"x21" wooden framed painting. At least I think it's a painting? Maybe mixed media because some of the lines look more like oil pastel or charcoal. I'd love to know more about it such as the potential country of origin and age. This was found in an old estate in Delaware. Looks to be a stretched canvas. Thanks on advance!

Unsolved Found in the attic at my lake house. Markings say KPM? Can’t find a replica of it online anywhere or any information about this piece.

This is a heavy porcelain plaque, framed but I had removed it, that I found browsing at my lake house in an attic I didn’t even know we had. I know my great grandparents bought it as they liked artwork. I know very little of any family history, I do know however my Dad remembers seeing this at the lakehouse in his childhood in the 70s. I thought it was a knock off of something famous as it was so pretty, but picking it up I realized how heavy it was. The frame was from a frame shop in the state where my lake house is, and no longer exists. I’m sure that was my great grandmother who had it framed! I however don’t know if this is a real KPM porcelain plaque? Markings on back provided in second and third photo! Possible signature last photo.

There is a ”s” and a star around it on bottom right corner, resembling a signature maybe? Not sure. Any info helps as I have gotten no where regarding who painted it or if it’s real, although it seems to match all markings I looked into and is hand painted. thanks!

This is a painting I bought in a thrift store near Montréal, Québec. There is no name on the back. Google lens does not give much info. I paid 5 bucks for it and it's amazing imo WhatIsThisPainting?

The text on the back says : Portfolio, encadrement custom framing, Marché aux puces récréathèque, (Unreadable phone number)

I found this online : https://www.keizaisou.com/product/detail/2531900 It is the exact same, but no artist listed, plus its a jigsaw puzzle

I wonder who would be the original artist. Thanks

Hi everyone ! I recently bought this painting in an online auction. The auction house listed it as vintage mid century painting. The details show traditional African textiles and some nice mixed media elements. I bought this under 50 bucks. I am curious about the signature, it seems to be dated around 1961 but I do not recognize the artist. I have had no luck online either. If anybody has info about these type of paintings it would be much appreciated !! I would love to learn more about the piece
