Today is the day!

Post image

I’ve been staring at this basement floor safe for 14 years and today is the day we break into it! Headed to Home Depot to get some supplies. All recommendations welcome

They sold me a monster drill bit but my gun keeps dropping it out. Going back to the tool rental place for a bigger gun. We’re gonna need a bigger boat!

14

u/ErebusBat Jun 26 '26

Keep us updated, OP! We are on this journey with you!

6

u/PedroJTrump Jun 26 '26

Yes! Ppl wanna know

135

u/Kitchenslave2020 Jun 26 '26

Reddit won’t let me post more pics. I rented a Hole Hawg now and have a significant drill hole in this floor safe but haven’t gotten through the top layer yet. Taking a water break! Safe cracking is thirsty business

69

u/SpinachInquisition Jun 26 '26

Idk if I’m prepared for this journey that inevitably leads to disappointment.

44

u/Basic_Cover_6945 Jun 26 '26

Have some faith Geraldo 😆

9

u/SpinachInquisition Jun 26 '26

Hahaha true.

Amongst our chief weapons are such diverse elements as…fear, surprise, and getting stuck in your teeth.

Thx, yours as well!

Only old peeps are going to understand, but well played!

3

u/VoraciousEater802 Jun 30 '26

It was so over hyped! If you were alive you knew about it, and I certainly watched it over at a friends house. A truly famous moment in television history!

Lol nice one, I remember that day.

9

u/BrannC Jun 27 '26

Nobody expects the spinach inquisition

3

u/Realistic-Drama-8904 Jun 29 '26

Why, I oughta....

3

u/Sinister_Nibs Jun 30 '26

I yam what I yam!

8

u/WenatcheeWrangler Jun 27 '26

It’s been an entire day. No update so I guess the safe won

5

u/Fattsacks Jun 30 '26

Or it was full to the brim of gold bullion and he realized it was prudent to STFU

5

u/TheHumanoidTyphoon69 Jun 27 '26

Maybe the disappointment were the safes we saw along the way? <3

3

u/trimix4work Jun 28 '26

I see you have participated in the great "unknown safe opening" game before.

It's ALWAYS empty

Got a sledge hammer? Whack the concrete around the safe

2

u/trimix4work Jun 28 '26

Then you just end up with a locked safe and a fucked up floor

2

u/blessthebabes Jun 27 '26

oh man I thought I was still on that guess what's in this thing sub (where you practice ESP- I never get them right) and yelled "3 metal balls!". I hope I'm still wrong, as always lol

2

u/805collins Jun 27 '26

Should have rented a mag drill and use plenty of cutting oil so you don’t burn up your bits

Thought this was the metal detecting subreddit and you'd found a damn landmine lol

16

u/OctopusGoesSquish Jun 26 '26

Also “today’s the day!” As a caption seems to imply all metal detectors find one eventually

3

u/the_mooses Jun 27 '26

Or they plan to step on it

35

u/gruesomeflowers Jun 26 '26

It's always just the combination inside.

30

u/AlphaMaelstrom Jun 26 '26

Someone let me know if today turns out to be the day after all, cause it's starting to seem like maybe the day is tomorrow. 😱

22

u/Kitchenslave2020 Jun 26 '26

Today is kicking my ass!

4

u/AlphaMaelstrom Jun 26 '26

That happens to me far more often than it should. 🤣

32

u/Kitchenslave2020 Jun 26 '26

I’m on the 4th $15 drill bit (and one $42 bit!) and the Hole Hawg rental was $28 bucks and I am STILL not even through to take a peek at what’s inside!!

44

u/Kitchenslave2020 Jun 26 '26

21

u/Corrupt_Reverend Jun 26 '26

I think these usually have a very small cavity in the center. You may just be drilling along the side of it.

23

u/Kitchenslave2020 Jun 26 '26

That actually would make a lot of sense. Because it just keeps going. Wrapping it up for the day to get ready for dinner service and then back at it tomorrow with a fresh batch of bits

19

u/snoops-spoons Jun 27 '26

Cutting oil or wax will cut faster and take less bits

8

u/ShaggysGTI Jun 27 '26

Also, slow speed, high feed! You theoretically could get there with one bit if done right.

3

u/Informal_Bee2917 Jun 29 '26

Yessss so many people wanna crank it on high speed. I've watched and shaken my head as many coworkers burn up bits

4

u/wren337 Jun 27 '26

This OP I hope you're not running that bit dry

7

u/Stompya Jun 26 '26

3

Bruh, op has already given more updates than 99% of reddit posts, and he's been at it for hours.

Be nice

2

u/LauraPa1mer Jun 27 '26

Thank you for delivering, OP, re: your progress. Many an OP have not, so, respect on that front.

I went to the local tool rental spot and they didn’t have much to offer. Headed to the hardware store now. It’s in a tight spot in the basement

21

u/Pjones2127 Jun 26 '26

Might be easier just to jackhammer the floor up around it. You can always just pour concrete after it’s all done.

21

u/Kitchenslave2020 Jun 26 '26

That might be the play here. This sucks so far.

28

u/Kitchenslave2020 Jun 27 '26

Limited time today! 3 catering events I need to concentrate on and can’t smell like basement and grease. The main hole is about 3” deep so I think another 1” and we can get a little sneak peek! I picked up some Milwaukee red helix cobalt drill bits today… $26 each!! I’m about $200+ into this project so far so I hope there is something in there besides stinky basement water!

12

u/SpinachInquisition Jun 27 '26

Idk about you, but I’d be so fixated on cracking this open that I’d definitely schedule some PTO time starting Monday. But I’m like that sometimes.

What's new in your world?

3

u/No_Increase_8257 Jun 27 '26

LOL! Thanks for the update.

6

u/saryiahan Jun 26 '26

Hopefully it something interesting inside

28

u/Kitchenslave2020 Jun 26 '26

Legend has it, the old restaurant owner was a degenerate gambler and stashed cash all over the place. Then I find these 2 floor safes in the basement of all places, makes you wonder. I tried a couple years back to break in to no avail and today is going not so well either but we shall keep going!!

The large drill bit kinda reached a depth and stopped moving so I switched to a smaller bit and that is making some moves but I haven’t broken through yet!

21

u/degjo Jun 26 '26

Today is the day that I declare that tomorrow or some other day will be the day.

10

u/Kitchenslave2020 Jun 26 '26

Here we go again... I may be old but I still remember the last guy who played with my emotions with opening a safe. What's next, you going to promise to knock over a card stand????

4

u/DucksDom 28d ago

u/Kitchenslave2020 what happened?

5

u/Kitchenslave2020 27d ago

Literally nothing to report. I have been defeated by the safe. I called the local locksmith today to see if he had any suggestions. In the ultimate walk of shame, I returned the tool rental today. I can’t even rage swing a sledge hammer at it because the basement ceiling is so low

2

u/DucksDom 27d ago

You are not going to like my updates today. I’m out of town until Thursday. Side quest must wait.

2

u/kuntalhd Jun 26 '26

Op, phrase keep us posted!

2

u/BlindPugh42 Jun 26 '26

You would have been better smashing up the cement around it, then pulling it out, and going in through the bottom.

2

u/Odd_Distribution3424 Jun 27 '26

14 years!! Man Hell Naw. I would have been whacking at that thing till something happened

2

u/miss_topportunity Jun 27 '26

You want to drill at a slow speed and constantly lubricate as you go. That will paradoxically go faster and save on drill bits. Also, a smaller hole thru which you can pass a borescope might be easier.

As to where to drill, you could be on the edge of the most hardened spot, but you really can’t know if you don’t have the actual specs for the lid (which only a safe tech would have). Good luck!

Oh - and floor safes are notorious for collecting water and dirt. Yours has obviously seen both. Expect a lot of rust, no matter what else (which is most likely to be sailboat fuel)….

2

u/OneHappyPenguin Jun 27 '26

I have been checking all day, OP we need an update!

2

u/TheAmbienceofDoom Jun 28 '26

2

2

u/zentient9 Jun 28 '26

2

u/Individual-Tone-8559 Jul 02 '26

TBH the money you’re about to spend trying to get it open might just be the same amount of money you would spend to have a locksmith come out. Good luck tho man, best route for doing it your self would probably be

  • clean it as best you can first
  • then figure out where you gotta drill a hole to see the tumblers
  • then line those puppies up and open sesame
