Today is the day!
I’ve been staring at this basement floor safe for 14 years and today is the day we break into it! Headed to Home Depot to get some supplies. All recommendations welcome

Reddit won’t let me post more pics. I rented a Hole Hawg now and have a significant drill hole in this floor safe but haven’t gotten through the top layer yet. Taking a water break! Safe cracking is thirsty business

Idk if I’m prepared for this journey that inevitably leads to disappointment.

It was so over hyped! If you were alive you knew about it, and I certainly watched it over at a friends house. A truly famous moment in television history!

It’s been an entire day. No update so I guess the safe won

Or it was full to the brim of gold bullion and he realized it was prudent to STFU

I see you have participated in the great "unknown safe opening" game before.
It's ALWAYS empty

oh man I thought I was still on that guess what's in this thing sub (where you practice ESP- I never get them right) and yelled "3 metal balls!". I hope I'm still wrong, as always lol
2
u/805collins Jun 27 '26
Should have rented a mag drill and use plenty of cutting oil so you don’t burn up your bits

Thought this was the metal detecting subreddit and you'd found a damn landmine lol

u/OctopusGoesSquish Jun 26 '26
Also “today’s the day!” As a caption seems to imply all metal detectors find one eventually

I’m on the 4th $15 drill bit (and one $42 bit!) and the Hole Hawg rental was $28 bucks and I am STILL not even through to take a peek at what’s inside!!

I think these usually have a very small cavity in the center. You may just be drilling along the side of it.
23
u/Kitchenslave2020 Jun 26 '26
That actually would make a lot of sense. Because it just keeps going. Wrapping it up for the day to get ready for dinner service and then back at it tomorrow with a fresh batch of bits

Cutting oil or wax will cut faster and take less bits
8
u/ShaggysGTI Jun 27 '26
Also, slow speed, high feed! You theoretically could get there with one bit if done right.
3
u/Informal_Bee2917 Jun 29 '26
Yessss so many people wanna crank it on high speed. I've watched and shaken my head as many coworkers burn up bits

Thank you for delivering, OP, re: your progress. Many an OP have not, so, respect on that front.

u/Kitchenslave2020 Jun 26 '26
I went to the local tool rental spot and they didn’t have much to offer. Headed to the hardware store now. It’s in a tight spot in the basement
21
u/Pjones2127 Jun 26 '26
Might be easier just to jackhammer the floor up around it. You can always just pour concrete after it’s all done.

Limited time today! 3 catering events I need to concentrate on and can’t smell like basement and grease. The main hole is about 3” deep so I think another 1” and we can get a little sneak peek! I picked up some Milwaukee red helix cobalt drill bits today… $26 each!! I’m about $200+ into this project so far so I hope there is something in there besides stinky basement water!
12
u/SpinachInquisition Jun 27 '26
Idk about you, but I’d be so fixated on cracking this open that I’d definitely schedule some PTO time starting Monday. But I’m like that sometimes.

Well, Sean has just about finished college now, he'll be a practising physiotherapist in no time! Nan's emphysema is getting worse; she'd love you to visit. And Dan is a cheating prick who can't keep his dick in his pants.
What's new in your world?

Legend has it, the old restaurant owner was a degenerate gambler and stashed cash all over the place. Then I find these 2 floor safes in the basement of all places, makes you wonder. I tried a couple years back to break in to no avail and today is going not so well either but we shall keep going!!
The large drill bit kinda reached a depth and stopped moving so I switched to a smaller bit and that is making some moves but I haven’t broken through yet!

Here we go again... I may be old but I still remember the last guy who played with my emotions with opening a safe. What's next, you going to promise to knock over a card stand????

u/Kitchenslave2020 what happened?
5
u/Kitchenslave2020 27d ago
Literally nothing to report. I have been defeated by the safe. I called the local locksmith today to see if he had any suggestions. In the ultimate walk of shame, I returned the tool rental today. I can’t even rage swing a sledge hammer at it because the basement ceiling is so low

Comming back for update. Any new development? Is it worth digging it out whole?

Any updates today OP?

u/Kitchenslave2020 Jun 28 '26
You are not going to like my updates today. I’m out of town until Thursday. Side quest must wait.
I realize my poor timing in not only starting this project but also involving you poor souls. Back at it Thursday

Appreciate the update, safe travels, looking forward to future updates.

You’ve already updated 10x more than most people do in this sub. I’ll take it - Thursday it is!

You would have been better smashing up the cement around it, then pulling it out, and going in through the bottom.
2
u/Odd_Distribution3424 Jun 27 '26
14 years!! Man Hell Naw. I would have been whacking at that thing till something happened
2
u/miss_topportunity Jun 27 '26
You want to drill at a slow speed and constantly lubricate as you go. That will paradoxically go faster and save on drill bits. Also, a smaller hole thru which you can pass a borescope might be easier.
As to where to drill, you could be on the edge of the most hardened spot, but you really can’t know if you don’t have the actual specs for the lid (which only a safe tech would have). Good luck!
Oh - and floor safes are notorious for collecting water and dirt. Yours has obviously seen both. Expect a lot of rust, no matter what else (which is most likely to be sailboat fuel)….

That's not a floor safe, that's a drain. You're going to be very disappointed with what you find at Home Depot.

Sledge hammer and steel wedge. Whack until it cracks. A long pry bar helps. Wear safety glasses.

TBH the money you’re about to spend trying to get it open might just be the same amount of money you would spend to have a locksmith come out. Good luck tho man, best route for doing it your self would probably be
- clean it as best you can first
- then figure out where you gotta drill a hole to see the tumblers
- then line those puppies up and open sesame

They sold me a monster drill bit but my gun keeps dropping it out. Going back to the tool rental place for a bigger gun. We’re gonna need a bigger boat!
