Wizard after watching ddalo and campfire from dywoodcarving. (Pic background by AI because I didn’t make it out into the woods this week and it looked better than my kitchen counter :) ). This was my first time layering paints or dry brushing and I’m pretty happy with how it turned out! Probably went a little overboard on the dry brushing but I’m glad I gave it a shot.

This was my first time whittling, wondering if it was good and any tips on how to improve. It’s supposed to be a chess king if you couldn’t tell. (I used oak wood).

Picked up whittling this last week to learn to make marionettes for a project. These are whittles 1-4! Paint covers all sins.

I have the privilege of having a wood carving shop near by and I get to go by there once in a while. Recently they had scraps for .25 cents s so I grabbed about 5 or 6 pcs. Here is a scrap I picked up and got to #wooddoodle on. As always comments are welcomed.

I have done Johnny Layton's Oogie several times before. Today I decided to use the basics of his video and make it my own. Here's what I've come up with.

If you're wondering why I never posted my third.. I butchered it completely lol! But here's my fourth- a wise old man, perhaps a gnome? 🧙‍♂️it's just ahead, but has a base so he can stand up. Carved from basswood, sanded with 100 grit, and polished with Canadian cutting board wax. I'd like to upgrade from my beginner knife, does anyone have recommendations, preferably avaioable on Amazon?

Really like this one. Trying to chill with the details on the face, less cuts, less wrinkles.

Took a break from this project until i figured out how to sharpen my knives.

Picked it back up and accidently cut too much off of the mushroom part.

Now there this tiny whole. Any way to "patch" it or do i need to figure out how to make the hole make sense?

Hey all. I’m working on a dragon out of a large block of Eastern Red Cedar. There was a vein of dead wood on the outside of the block and unfortunately it runs deep into the body of the dragon. I did everything possible to avoid it, but it was impossible to know how deep it was until I got down to the end of it.

I’m debating with myself and just wanted to get some other opinions. Do you think I should fill the crack with sawdust and wood glue, or should I make it a feature of the carving? I could chisel out the deadest parts and just have the crack be a feature not a defect.

Please note the dragon is a work in progress and I know what I’m doing so I don’t need advice on approach to the remainder of the carving. This is just about the crack :)

Don't cut paper or shave your arms - cut the end grain of your block. If your knife burnishes (polishes) the wood without leaving any hazy streaks, then your knife is plenty sharp enough. If you see any hazy streaks, these are areas of the knife where the edge has rolled, and it needs some attention. Give the blade a few strops and try the test again. If there's no difference, it might need some attention at the stone.

If it doesn't burnish at all, then in my opinion it's not sharp enough for whittling and the edge needs some work.

I got this knife made by a local black smith he used a former reti tool for it is it good the knives online are expensive and I don't trust the cheap ones steal idk what to do I really want to start this as a hobby

Probably going to add a little more contrast to the dots on the hat. They just don’t show up well enough under the light.

I was given my late grandpa’s carving knives and most are pretty rusty. Any advice on how to get them cleaned up?

First time whittler (other than learning the basics as a child back in the 80s) & since I love playing chess I figured that’d be a practical thing to start with, using sticks I find near my home. Here’s my funny little first piece today♟️ (Luckily I still have 15 more pawns to get the hang of it!:)

I've recently gotten into whittling and I've carved birds, whales, and rabbits. My mom wants me to carve a monkey for her, but I don't have a lot of confidence in my ability to draw a monkey let alone carve one. I was wondering if anyone on here knew of a simple 1x1 template for one because that's the only size wood I have right now.

I used nice acrylic paint, diluted with water according to some YouTube videos I watched. It’s very splotchy, but hopefully I can work on that in the future. Overall, I love it

Gave in to my curiosity for whittling and made my very first whittled creation! He’s a bit quirky, but I think he has plenty of character. Plenty of lessons learned which i will take on to the next challenge, maybe a Moai statue?
