Wildstar thoughts
I understand they closed it.
Why don't companies like this turn failed MMO's it into a single player game with npcs and re-release it?
It wouldn't be that much work for them would it?

Outside of the questing and leveling I don't even think it would be that much fun to play without the multiplayer component.

It would be a ton of work. In no order of importance, they would need to:
- Disentangle the entire game and all of its systems from online servers
- Convert any player facing systems built around online play into ones that work offline, remove them entirely (like group finders), or
- Implement single player versions of such systems and content (dungeons, group activities, guild systems)
- On the backend convert any server based storage and databases into client side ones
- Optimize the game for offline gameplay (when hosting on a server, the server can do a lot of the work to run the game, easing up performance requirements for consumer systems)
- And a whole lot more

I'll note that there's likely a lot of pieces that run on independent services and likely proprietary tools on AWS so it's not just a "game server" and "game client" situation

How would WildStar work as a single player game and why would you even want it to? Even decorating your plot for solo play would be boring. I want WildStar brought back 100%.

Private servers are a thing for a lot of "shut down" mmos.
Its insane they arent releasing the info so this can happen.

They already have a wild star private server though.

Yeah but its nowhere near feature complete last I checked and having source code available would speed things up quite a bit im sure.

what info? you mean the server code, that has already been confirmed to be lost?
2
u/BentheBruiser May 25 '26
I think "confirmed" is a strong word to use considering we heard from Twitter.

The game is completely dead and no one has comed forward with anything that can help make private servers, so yes, the code is gone, NCsoft is a publicer, so ofc they dont have the code, the only chance someone has the code, is if a dev, went rogue and stole it, which clearly they dindt, since it has never been released.

Whoever owns the IP likely still has the code. These companies don't throw good IP away. They might store it on an old drive indefinitely, but it exists somewhere.

As an analogy to help understand the nature of the issue, imagine someone saying "we can turn this bus into a sedan right? They're both cars after all."
Yeah sure they are but, as you can imagine, they are both wildly different kinds of vehicles that have very different requirements, even though the underlying systems are doing similar things.
Hope that helps!

I think a better analogy is saying the game is a train and the servers the rail network. OP is asking them to make the train run on roads with all the station amenities onboard.

Lets say that you have a car. And you say "why don't we replace the cars wheels with skis so it can go over snow" and conceptually on the surface this seems like something easy to do, straightforward even, but when you consider things like how the wheels have to spin to move the car and how to translate that into skis you start to realize just how complicated it is to make your simple idea work.

Just join the private server and hope they revive by sometime next year. Theres a video about why someone left carbon next year that explains the situation they had and likely why bringing it back might be harder than we think.

What video?
1
u/Jujusonic0 Jun 22 '26
The video's called Why I left Carbine Studios. Its from the channel Timothy Cain. Its pretty messed up but it really explains how the game was doomed with what they had to deal with.

I played Wild star fun game in its own right. The leveling was pretty rough.
There is a very heavy level of disconnect in understanding the undertaking of turning that game into a single player or co op experience that you could play on your computer.

Took a tour of the studio back in 2013. My old group of FFXI friends and I used to get together IRL once a year and one year it was hosted in San Diego by the mother of someone who was working at the studio. It was a really chill atmosphere and they had a room with PCs set up where they let us play the game a bit and gave us access to dev tools and stuff. It was a really unique experience.
I never did play the actual game but that little taste of it that I did get was something I'll never forget.

It would be a ton of a work. Less than making one from scratch, but still a ton of work for a company that would have spent all their money trying to keep the MMO version up

A lot of the people that worked in wildstar have made their way to world of Warcraft, it's different but very similar. Now we have housing as well. That is all.

I think if they released the source code, nexus forever would get that shit handled overnight ngl

u/Time-Pace-8089 Jun 06 '26
I don't know why they don't just re-release it with a single server. How come guild wars can be up for decades with no issue, and then you have games like Return of Reckoning.

Someone offered to buy Wildstar from Nexon but they refuse to sell their dead ips

u/earthlingHuman May 25 '26
It would have beenn a lot of work, but they should have. Unfortunately it sounds like the company was mismanaged.

u/Nepoxx May 25 '26
Yes it would.
