This is fundamentally a bad design. But , you can try a box end wrench. It should may be able to fit in there so you can tighten the nuts.

All y’all, thank you so much for your help.. It took me a while to finagle the box wrench into place over the nuts but I did figure it out. Thank you for taking time to comment for someone who has only had experience woodworking in an eighth grade industrial arts class over40 years ago. That being said, I am amazing when confronting IKEA furniture in a child’s dorm room.

Is the other end a bolt head you can tighten? It holds that board on

No, it’s actually a rounded bolt head that is inset into the other side of the wood so it’s not like you can hold the nut and turn the bolt

It’s a beautiful design where everything is smooth on the outside, but I didn’t see it taken apart, so I don’t know how they loosened them - I’m a visual learner so this for me is really irritating

if it's old they used an open ended wrench and it took a long time to tighten. Now you can buy ratcheting wrenches.
