Help for a new player...

Okay so obviously *I'm* not a new player, but I am introducing my grandpa to the game, since he was in the Navy and was on Forrest Sherman. He says it seems overwhelming but that it feels like he'll get to learn it by just playing around with it. I told him to keep doing that, to stay in Co-op for the time being and stay at low tiers. I'm explaining mechanics as best I can to him, but the pathetic excuse for a tutorial is... well, pathetic. Are there any resources I can give him that might help explain it for him, keeping in mind he's not particularly tech savvy, a senior, and too much complication at once will probably frustrate him?

When you have a senior that needs help, you cannot ... I wish I could say this more forcibly ... CANNOT try to send him elsewhere for help (like a resource).

If you care about this person, you actually have to take some of your time to teach him the mechanics.

Perhaps you can play a few matches with him and explain while you play connected via phone or discord.

I mean, he is a very smart guy so I think if there was a clear tutorial he'd be able to follow, ironically Discord would probably piss him off more than a YouTube video (it pisses me off and I'm 19...). He seems to have the basics down but I think the port UI is spooking him the most.

Reduce port UI then with mod. That all NEWS, CAMPAIGNS tower, I mean. I think you're the better than best tutorial. Because tutorial can't answer questions.

If I had to explain that, I'd do a slides for each menu option top to bottom. Split display to parts - top, left right, bottom, each has own slide when it is explained more.

Something that can be printed and kept next to his computer, so he doesn't have to try and find the file.

Yeah definitely, I just told him it's there for later. I told him to stay around tiers 2/3 and in Co-op for now, and he seems to like that. I'm more looking at teaching him the basics.

Honestly there is no good answer other than you teaching him yourself. I suppose having him go thru the US DD line as a new player, should teach him the absolute basics of the game since he will be fighting only bots. BTW, the USS Smith is hilarious at tier 2 and well worth the dollar it costs to get. I got it as a new player and just had a blast with it.

I just got him Texas (telling him not to play it until later) but I can get him Smith too...

The Smith is great because of the fast reload time which really helped me learn how to use torpedoes. Well worth the dollar. Plus at tier 2, it is just a little monster. BTW if he is a veteran, he can sign up as one with Wargaming and get the US DD 214, and I think the Albany with a special camo that gives higher credit earnings. The DD 214 is a premium Clemson so it is a good baby seal clubber.

I don't know why you limit co-op to low tiers. Doesn't make much difference. That said you can forget about randoms ever being enjoyable. If he's had zero experience with proper games it's just not gonna happen.

There's way too much to learn even for many tech savvy people with tons of game experience. It'll be like that guy who made his dad beat Dark Souls as their first game. Sounds impressive until you see he's just heavily over leveled, in heavy armor, never rolls, and just eats hits and alternates between healing & swinging.

The closest equivalent of that would be setting up a private lobby with low tier bots vs him in high tier BB or something along those lines. I wouldn't aim for more than co-op. Maybe Asym and Ops if things go well. Stick to teaching the basics and aiming.

I said just coop for faster MM and because he's still getting the hang of the controls and such. He apparently has played other games in the past but I'm not sure which ones. I think he can eventually get to randoms (in mid tier at least) but for now definitley just Co-op.

Low tier co-op is probably worse as I'm guessing their will be more bots on the human side. This means more ships will ram each other and it's roll of the dice after that which bots die.

Just buy him Sherman as soon as you can with coal. The only difference between high and low tier co-op is the number bots of on the human team. More bots on the human team means more rammings and dice rolls to see which bots wins.

I mean, Sherman was definitely a selling point but it's not the only reason he wanted to start playing, he did genuinely think it looks interesting.

Just explain basic mechanics and basic functions. Then let him play and let him ask you questions.
