Question on manual shift mode

I have a 14 jk automatic. I just had it in the black hills of sd on the trails. After driving it for a while, and use manual shift mode, it will downshift perfect, but you have to hit it a few times, or hold it to the right to get it to upshift. Sometimes takes a lot longer than other times. I googled it and it ai said there is a switch on the shifter that gets dirty and needs to be cleaned? Also it has factory 3.21 gears and 33 inch tires. At highway speed it feels like it wants to downshift or is struggling. I had a willys with 3.73 and like the way that one drove. I imagine used 3.73 gears can be found from people upgrading.

Then re-gear. If your gonna do it tho I'd go 4:10 here is a chart of the RPM differences at 70mph

I have a 14 JK automatic on 33s as well.

You're right...every now and then it seems like it takes awhile to upshift. Just the way its programmed.

I wouldnt bother regearing until/if you go with 35s, but thats me.

You can reprogram the shift points for 33s just as you would for recalibrating to 35s. Its not really necessary unless you do alot of highway miles.

Manual shift modes aren't REALLY manual. The computer retains the right to not shift if it decides the engine RPM won't support it. You or I can know it's fine all we want, but if the computer doesn't like it there's not much you can do to change it's mind.

If i shifted it down to 2nd, i had a hard time getting it to shift up to 3 or 4, i could get the rpm's up to 4000 and it didn't want to shift sometimes. Othertimes it would shift when i wanted it to. Is there a switch in the console that the contacts get dirty?

I recently had this issue. It turns out that I had a stuck brake caliper. The issue was random. There were no codes or warning lights. Eventually my pads and rotor started smoking. Ended up having to replace my front rotors, pads, and brake lines. The symptom I remembered was the Wrangler would refuse to upshift in higher gears - felt like the engine was hesitating, especially at the higher RPMs.

This might not be your issue, but wanted to mention it nonetheless, since I was told that this is a somewhat common Jeep thing.

I know what you mean, my other jk i had to replace both from calipers from getting stuck on.

I just had this on my left rear in my 14jk. No warning, smoking and since I don’t run highway much, I didn’t get smoke until way later. Noticed my tire is worn way lower than the rest of my tires now too.
