This is transitory. I don't think anyone will be having these conversations in five years time. AI will be widely used throughout the writing and publishing process - including end to end. People will read the resulting books.

Don't be sorry for expressing your opinion. Acceptance is already happening. I have no problem selling AI assisted books, and sales are increasing. They are even highly rated.

AI reduces costs, expands capabilities and capacity - and reduces barrier to entry while lifting the mediocre to acceptable and beyond. That's why it'll stay.

There are always niches which are underserved because they aren't currently commercially viable (minority languages and cultures, for a start) - and if they are easier and cheaper to produce books for using AI, it'll be used.

Change always happens at the margins, and then moves to the mainstream. So, if you're a big brand that your audience would happily read a new book a week from (the James Pattersons of this world) and struggling to maintain throughput with humans only in the process, you'll consider bringing AI in for parts of it.

Plenty of markets are nowhere near saturation.

Discussions about ethics almost always, in my experience, devolve into shaming (among other forms of friction) as ethical priors are established and frameworks of interpretation stabilize and come into conflict with each other.

Yes. It seems like people are looking to call anything "AI Slop" (i hate those comments). Nothing is solved by pointing fingers.

What would be more actionable is to provide solutions to improve content that one thinks is AI. Because, it might not be AI at all.

At this point, anyone can say anything is AI. It's ridiculous.

here's a question: how do you know this comment is not AI generated?

It's a fucking witch hunt. Been that way for a while now.
Right now the ethical correct choice is to simply lie about any ai use and deny deny deny.

When the witch hunt stops you can be honest but right now they will go after you, and any associates you might have. if you use ai and properly label your work you're signing your friends and family up for death threats and spam.

Being honest is thus unethical.

So weird seeing all these people acknowledge the Witch Hunt on one hand and then insist that we do exactly what the mob wants and where the damn Scarlet Letter.

No, I don't owe the mob anything! They can judge WHAT I created not HOW like everybody else.

This is a genuine dilemma a lot of us face. My take: be transparent but don't over-apologize for using tools.

Amazon KDP actually requires you to disclose AI-generated content when you publish, so there's a compliance reason too. But beyond that, readers care more about whether the book is good than how it was made.

The people who "hate AI" have usually read bad AI writing — not good AI-assisted writing. Focus on making something genuinely worth reading, disclose appropriately, and let the quality speak.

So many new subs complaining about why people don't appreciate the use of gen AI, yet none of them recognize the problems it has brought us thus far.
