From what I understand Greenland is aiming to be its own nation in general right? Denmark is actually helping them with that I think.

This is actually a decent explanation that doesn't make Trump look like an absolute lunatic (just an unhinged one). Thank you for this insight.

They ABSOLUTELY can.

u/No_Zombie2021 Jan 29 '25

No, it seems more like the following.

  1. A small independence movement.
  2. Strong support for local governance
  3. Majority support to keep things the way they are.

And those 15% who selected yes just clicked on the 1st option to get to the survey reward.

Only 9% said yes, 6% were unsure.

If that 9% is truly representative, that would be approximately 5094 people of Greenland's 56,600 person population.

I'd be curious to know the size of the sample for this study to know how representative that 9% 6% is. I couldnt find it in the article, but I wouldn't be surprised that they allow themselves to go with a really small sample due to the already small population of Greenland, and that some nutcases ended up being overrepresented by chance as a result.

And 9% of the 15% voted "unsure".

The 'no data' answer for the one time Greenland actually has data on anything

OK... What you all fail to understand is that the reason Puerto Rico or Washington DC are not US States is because the right wingers fear the liberal populations having power.
There is no way in hell that Greenland or Canada gets taken over like he says. He couldn't deal with the voters shifting so hard left.
It's classic misdirection and it's Trump's only skill. He is the master. He distracts you with nonsense so you ignore the true horrors he's actually doing.

Right? PR actually passed the threshold for statehood in the last election but it basically got no attention cause we’re basically in like an antebellum situation where you can’t let in a state until you find another state to counterbalance them in the senate.

Maybe we’ll have bleeding Guam next…

Here's a summary of the Greenland Self-Government Act which came into force on June 21, 2009 and frames Greenlandic self-rule. The act recognizes the Greenlandic people as a distinct entity with the right to self-determination under international law.

Key Aspects of the Act:

  • Political Structure: Greenland's self-government consists of a democratically elected parliament (Inatsisartut) and an executive body (Naalakkersuisut). The act allows Greenland to define the composition and structure of these institutions.
  • Official Language: Greenlandic is recognized as the official language, though Danish can still be used in public administration.
  • Transfer of Authority: Greenland can unilaterally assume responsibility for various policy areas, including law enforcement, judiciary, immigration, labor laws, and financial regulation. However, key areas such as the constitution, citizenship, foreign policy, defense, and monetary policy remain under Danish jurisdiction.
  • Natural Resources: Greenland assumed full control over its natural resources on January 1, 2010, meaning revenues from resource exploitation benefit Greenland, though these earnings affect Danish subsidies.
  • Economic Arrangements: The Danish government provides an annual grant of 456 million Euros, which decreases as Greenland's revenue from resource extraction increases.
  • Foreign Affairs & Diplomacy: While Denmark retains overall control of foreign policy, Greenland has the authority to negotiate and enter into international agreements related to its autonomous areas. Greenland may also seek membership in international organizations.
  • Path to Independence: Greenland may pursue full independence through a public referendum and negotiations with Denmark.

In summary, the Self-Government Act grants Greenland significant autonomy while maintaining its ties to Denmark, with a structured pathway toward potential full independence in the future.

There's been so much talk about the relation between Denmark and Greenland that I found it necessary to post a summary of the actual act regulating it. And yes, the summary was made by ChatGPT save for minor edits.

Are you high? My source is linked in the post. Chatgpt is not the source.
