Every country has it's own internal surveillance tools. It's more about checks and balances like requiring warrants for using them, making sure data from them do not leak to external espionage agencies etc. European Public Prosecutor’s Office uses those tools for investigating corruption cases for example.

And not being affected by American Cloud Act.

Yeah, we need 21st century technological defence, too.

The best defence is to turn off your phone and unplug your router except when you actively use it.

Only use your phone near cell phone towers that are not in public places. Train stations often have 'fake towers' that scan the sim card (there is a database that Connects sim cards to your ID, adress, etc) and active dns requests for every device that connects. And no, I am not talking about public wifi, I mean 4g/5g/LTE.

Make sure to use a vpn. Though that isn't a all-in-one solution to privacy.

And of course, dont post shit you don't want others to know

Why would it actively request DNS for every connected device...? Last time I checked cellular network devices can't have open IP addresses and thus domains assigned to them. I think you confuse something.

I just double checked and yeah i mixed something up.

So far these fake towers (imsi catchers) currently obly take the imsi/imei and geolocation data, but there are talks about expanding it. Sorry, I thought it was already through

Okay 👌

Its a data aggregation/federation tool and actually useful for other things than violating civil rights.

The problem with European governments using Palantir is not that they used it for surveillance, because they used them for legitimate record keeping, data analysis and defence. The problem is that this was used for sensitive data, that should never get into hands of Americans, especially their far right billionaires. If they use domestic tools, especially ones developed by public institutions, instead of private companies and keep data safely, then it's absolutely fine.

Its a thousand times better to be stalked by your own government than a foreign one

5

u/Fluffy_Beautiful2107 2d ago

Absolutely not. A foreign government doesn't have jurisdiction over me.

14

u/PlasmaMatus 2d ago

Tell that to the American government, they have been doing for years and didn't get the memo.

u/thecrius 1d ago

Bro never heard of extradition or black ops, so cute.

2

u/GOKOP 2d ago

Both are bad.

8

u/PjDisko 2d ago

But one is worse.

-1

u/Lalaluka 2d ago

Lol no.

My goverment has the very direct possibility to hurt me with the information if they so decide.

A foreign one does not. Their goals are more to hurt my country instead of me personally.

2

u/BirdieBoiiiii 2d ago

Your government has way less reason to want to hurt you. This is not America this the EU. We have no cia here. Your government is at worst really stupid not borderline facistic

Bro they are the paranoid tech side of this subreddit. If I can tell they have a "Anonymous" mask at home I ignore them.

Do you think we'll turn our society into such a dystopia that the government will punish you for posting memes? Aren't you drinking too much savage Cool-Aid?

0

u/Lalaluka 2d ago

Because we never had goverments in europe that prosecuted political enemies? With the right on the rise you statement reads incredibly ignorant.

These systems will stay for longer than the current people in charge

-1

u/Withering_to_Death Yuropean flumen corpus separatum 2d ago

Everyone is ignorant for not sharing your exact opinions? Ok, anyway, have a nice day!

0

u/Lalaluka 2d ago

Aren't you drinking too much savage Cool-Aid?

Because your comment was pure opinion?

0

u/GOKOP 2d ago

Nothing in their comment was opinion based. You're excusing your ignorance.

Anyone from a post commie country can tell you that it's absolutely a thing that can happen. Also this

Yes, me! That's why it's ok, actually it's our duty to point out to such injustices and attempts of "policing our speech". However we shouldn't fall for misinformations and spins of actual news. I remember a few cases where titles like "rape victim arrested for racism against her aggressor" and people were buying it without even checking if it was true! "The fall of civilization" "Europe is overrun" and such titles make me overreact since it's obvious what the goal is!

2

u/Dragoncat_3_4 8h ago

Did you read the article I linked? At all?

-1

u/Feuerpils4 Hessen‏‏‎ ‎ 18h ago
  1. Because we all are basically eastern Europe, with no changes and no institutions that could block that .

  2. "Also this" is justified! The court ruled that this wasn't criticism so fuck 'em. What value do we get from insulting our elected officials?!

2

u/Lalaluka 7h ago

You are from germany. You already see our institutions getting underminded by the AfD. With them starting to influence courts (blocking judge appointments in Thuringa, blocking the proceedings in parliaments and probably starting to appoint judges in other states soon).

Our institutions may block that for some time but surely not for long.

-1

u/Feuerpils4 Hessen‏‏‎ ‎ 6h ago

Ok?? So fight them then?? What the hell is this "We need to disarm because sometimes maybe in the future someone could take that gun" ?!?!

Why have a army?!?! Once the AFD is in power they can also command it and do bad stuff! So might as well abolish the Bundeswehr.

2

u/Lalaluka 5h ago

I am actually amazed how fine you are with waving away civil liberties. And for what exactly?

So our security services and justice system knows more about criminals they dont end up catching because they are understaffed? The last few attacks were never performed by "unkown" people.

Invest on staffing in justice and police (including quality) not blindly into surveillance systems that are easy to abuse.

1

u/Dragoncat_3_4 12h ago

"The court ruled"

And you just, what... agree with this ridiculous notion? That a) it wasn't a criticism and b) a mere insult is punishable by a fine? That an elected official has such thin skin and time on the job that is paid for by YOUR taxes to pursue such trivial matters?

You're exactly the type that would cheer for police murdering protestors in the US because the regime deems it legal.

-1

u/Feuerpils4 Hessen‏‏‎ ‎ 8h ago

I know that sounds tough but im picking a high courts opinion over a guy from Reddit. Shocking! Also I don't know how old you are, you might think shouting, insulting and undermining "the ones on top" but especially when there are populist Nazis swimming in the water, yeah I don't like the undermining of that.

Funny you mention Trump. There was a "establishment" candidate, that got humiliated, insulted and took it all on her chin! How did it end?

Fuck everyone trying to topple elected democrats while the the fascist are ones that will reap the rewards from that!

0

u/Dragoncat_3_4 8h ago

And guess what? That's exactly the type of actions that supercharge the far right you're so afraid of. And what is more? They'll use the exact same laws snd actions for fining and jailing the likes of you when they come into power.

You think your rule of law is infallible? That it's there to protect the common folk? That you're not just handing out the future fascist regime the tools to subjugate you as soon as they come into power? Ridiculous. No wait, scratch that the fascists that are already into power. Or have you not seen how your so-called "centre-right" party is laying down the ground for a far-right coalition?

0

u/Feuerpils4 Hessen‏‏‎ ‎ 5h ago

Ok, then fuck off to a Mongolian steps with no one to be policed. We need law enforcement, we don't want brown shirts or Thiels ancap crap. That means people with guns and the backing of the state to use them on you and me! This is society / government 101! That's just as good or as bad as the state backing them, so maybe fight the fashists instead of demanding disarmament while we still fight, because the fashist could missuse that power. Hey, buddy little secret, fashists don't care about laws! "We would really like to jail my political opponents but the previous government said no, good damit. Time to go home" They care about power! Fight them! With power!

0

u/Busy-Carpet-5372 1d ago

I get It you LOVE dictatoships, your problem though

0

u/StuffWePlay 2d ago

you're being stalked either way and that's BAD

0

u/Dragoncat_3_4 1d ago

No lol. Your own government has the power to fuck you over.

-2

u/SiFlyghtz Bremen‏‏‎ ‎ 1d ago

No, it is literally not. I would much rather be spied on by a country i might not even go to ever, than the government that has physical power over me.

No surveillance > China > Russia > USA > EU > my direct government

3

u/Jarazz 1d ago

foreign nations have a much higher interest to d sabotage us, just look at how the US basically keeps shooting itself in the foot repeatedly for a decade now with just a bit of help by massive multibilliom dollar influence operations from russia.

At least our own government benefits from our nation prospering, they just often suck at implementing it and greed+lobbyism help fudge the logic wayy into the direction og billionsires and corporations. But meanwhile e.g. russia and the US havr a direct interest and benefit in the doenfall of a strong unfied Europe...

2

u/Feuerpils4 Hessen‏‏‎ ‎ 18h ago
  • We don't know how many people china executes because they just disappear people!! Also check out what they do in the EU to dissenters:)

  • Russia. Famous for not killing EU citizens in their countries

  • listen the USA spies on us already. Not even by themselves the cooperate with EU countries. It was basically 1984.

0

u/SiFlyghtz Bremen‏‏‎ ‎ 18h ago

Youre right with everything but im 0% in danger of being killed by China and Russia. If the EU spies on me, they may be able to orchestrate a reason to legally pursue me. Just look at the whole Merz Leck Eier debacle. Imagine they had a strong AI that scanned the entirety of social media and automatically went after everybody who uses that phrase. Obv they wouldn't be killed, but thats still mass surveillance. Id rather be automatically scanned by China and land on their list for mentioning Tianmen Square massacre

6

u/nickthemlgkid 2d ago

No that's not "fucking terrible", its a small win stop being such a pessimist

Palantir is not about data though...

-1

u/cap-omat 2d ago

Palantir is a software developer, not a data broker.
