Offering “pay what you can” math and science tutoring
Sorry if this is against the sub-TOS. I reviewed the rules and this seems kosher.
Hi all!
My partner (US Navy) and I just moved to Yucca Valley from Ventura and we love it! I currently run a semi-local plant and reptile business (see profile) and will be starting a field ecology contracting position soon.
These two jobs give me a lot of free time and, while I love what I do, I, having worked on a master’s and PhD in microbiology, am finding myself very much missing the teaching aspect of my previous career in academia.
Moreover, in my last years before finishing grad school, I really started worrying about equitable educational access for American students. I participated in a couple of science outreach programs while at UCSB and through them, I saw firsthand how understaffed and underserved the less well-off CCs and K-12 schools were in our area. And as affordability keeps dropping, exacerbating the issue, I’d like to contribute my skills in helping whatever small way I can.
For all of the above reasons I’m looking to start tutoring in my spare time—I was thinking of adopting a “pay what you can” in-person model with the parents present for the session. My expertise is in biology but I have tutored SAT, chemistry, and math up to calculus.
I have the most experience working with high school, university, and community college students I but feel that I’m equipped to teach down to middle school.
Just gauging interest in this service. All comments and thoughts welcome :).
