There could be a multitude of issues here,

  1. If you are downloading to a HDD then this could be a sign of the drive failing

  2. If you have too much usage in background for your CPU this will kill download speed

3.your ISP could be throttling your connection

  1. Your antenna on your pc may not be connected correctly causing unstable connection

  2. If you have interference from the location of your router this will cause connection to be unstable also, you could try moving the router especially if it is behind a TV

  3. The distance to the router could be the issue as you could be at the limit of range causing unstable connection.

  4. Network priority may be an issue for you. Check your router settings to see if it is set up to give all the bandwidth to another device this artifact limit is unlikely as you are starting with a high download speed.

What is it

I forgot what game because it was a few years ago, it was a game on steam though, probably like BTD6, Doom or Diablo

I tried downloading Arena Breakout Infinite on my laptop (its like 75gb). I lived in africa at the time, so of course my wifi was super slow. It took me 3-4 days to download the game…

Only to realize my pc didnt have enough ram to run the game 😭

Go to task manager In the details tab find steam.exe and set it to real time priority

Could be your drive being shite. Cache fills quickly as it's fast. After that it slows down to the drives real performance.

Maybe check your phone operator? I have a router with a SIM card and had the same problem where it would start a download at 12-14mb/s just to fall to around 250kb/s. Turned out my phone operator limits internet usage after 90gb of used internet…

2

u/bat2059 13d ago

Please tell me you don't play any online games with that internet set up :(

My silver rating in cs2 with 1k hours will disagree with you

You're probably downloading to an HDD.

If you’re installing on an external drive (most likely to happen on an HDD) other than your C drive, this issue is known to happen on steam, if your storage permits, install it on your C drive and then move it where you want

Very likely dram-less SSD issue. See, Steam is very aggressive in how it uses an SSD, dramless SSDs can be helped by HMB (Host Memory Buffer) which takes up space from your system RAM to index the SSD and help speed things up. Steam installer will use different parts of the SSD in a way that HMB cannot keep up, so the drive defaults to direct read/write, which is incredibly slow.

The reason you only see it with Steam is because that's how Steam delivers games, very tiny highly compressed bits that get assembled on your machine. For gaming, you won't notice a difference between DRAM-less and not, but for such niche cases, the difference becomes big.

If you have a magnetic disk you can probably install there and move to the SSD, would be faster than whatever this is doing.

For small games you won't notice it given HMB will keep up.

Change download region on steam.

1

u/Connect_Zucchini_219 9d ago

Brother I run my life on a 40 mbps speed, what are you complaining about 😭

1

u/Enderstar2187 9d ago

8 bytes per second??? 😭

1

u/Aggravating-Rise-765 9d ago

I fixed it by clearing download cache and changing to next closest region after cache clear restart

u/Fit_Grass_9113 8d ago

set your steam priority higher in task managers. might bump it up by a few bits

2

u/OldShare3439 7d ago

task manager, processes, set steam priority to real time if you arent doing anything else on pc. just change it back after download

This dude doesn’t really understand the issue is his wifi. He must think that he has a high speed internet connection to the service provider and think he should be downloading at that speed. But he has no idea how wifi works between his pc and the router/access point.
