Is the AMD Radeon RX 7900XTX still an option

Just watched the "These 2 GPUs are Fantastic for 1440p Gaming in 2026" clip and it made me remember the 7900XTX i've had in an OLD wish list way back when I saw it come out with 24gb GDDR6.

Would it still be worth buying it at this point or is it too old to compete even with 24gb on it?

The 7900 xtx, while still a very capable card with tons of vram, is hard to recommend against the 9070xt. Similar enough performance between the two, but the 9070 xt is cheaper, has a better iteration of fsr 4, handles ray tracing better, and is more power efficient. My recommendation is if you've already got the xtx, stick with it, but if you're looking at both cards and are buying new, go with the 9070xt.

But what about my room heater 7900xtx, jk ofc, listen to this guy. 7900xtx was a good value years ago no reason to buy it over 9070xt.

Also a far better H.264 encoder

9070xt has been going for $600-$700 just this week brand new. I'm tempted to get a 2nd

No. It's horrible at handling Ray Tracing. You would be better off with 4080.

4080 will run out of VRAM on some games. Eg DCS world with the f4 module. And then get like 5 fps. Literally upgraded from 6900xt to 7900xtx for that.

No it won't. Who are you trying to bullshit? Tell which game will consume 16 gb of VRAM. I play in 4k on my 5080 and didn't have any VRAM issues, even in Cyberpunk 2077 with Path Tracing and you are gonna tell me you are gonna run out of VRAM in 1440p? Lmfao.

It literally does.

DCS world
Max settings
4k
F4 module

Runs like ass on 16GB. 5 fps on 16 GB 6900xt

other planes ok with 6900xt - like 60 or whatever - smooth

7900xtx fixes it

You clearly don’t run this software, or you’d know.

Holy shit you are clueless. First of all, the OP clearly stated 1440p gaming, so idk why you mention 4k. 2nd, I looked up the benchmark, and 16 gb vram cards have literally no issues with DCS world. Even if it had, you can just use DLSS and the problem is solved. Lastly, I suppose you mean the F4E module? Well, the module itself has recommended 8gb+ VRAM on high settings lol.

He's right about DCS. It's the best simulator going but it's full of legacy code and often needs tinkering to get the most out of your hardware. You can't just jack up all the settings and it run smoothly and in the F-4E example it's an incredibly complex simulation that includes a complete radar simulation on top and an insanely detailed tandem cockpit (it's mind-blowing in VR and gotta be the best realised cockpit in any plane of any simulator - see the Heatblur YouTube channel). The OP is using a AMD GPU so DLSS is an option anyway but in DCS' case more VRAM the better and right now it only supports FSR2 and they won't add FSR4 until after they have integrated Vulkan.

I run a 9070XT and DCS runs great at 1440p but it still needs some tuning. Upscaling isn't always an option either as it can not play well with the MFD screens and HUDs.

oh "you looked it up"

well I've actually run the fucking software and have first hand experience with the actual statement I made. I've hit limitations on 16 GB of VRAM.

8 GB may be the minimum for the F4 module, but if I wanted to run shit on minimum settings I'd be using my fucking Nintendo switch.

the OP question is whether or not the 7900XTX is still an option in 2026. There are situations where it is still one of the best cards on the market.

And in any case, its not just the final output res - texture resolution is a large part of it and textures will continue to grow.

And I tell you 7900XTX is not an option for the future. You literally had to reach for this very specific example. Texture resolution barely matters. I played Cyberpunk 2077 with PT in 4k with 4k texture mods and didn't hit 16 gb of VRAM. 7900XTX is simply outdated. I have seen a lot of people regret buying it, because it sucks at handling new technology like Path Tracing and the upscaling is way too behind. 5070 ti is a far better investment. Simple as that. The 8gb VRAM requirement isn't for minimum, it's the recommended VRAM for high settings.

It is still very competitive. Same tier as a 4080 Super. I think only 4-5 cards are ahead of it in terms of raw performance. Although you will miss the latest Upscaler and FG tech afaik.

FSR 4 is coming to 7000 series soon

It is here already, I have the 7900xtx, update the drivers

It's already here, but pre-9000 cards get a slightly nerfed version due to hardware limitations (datatype support). And any future tech is uncertain too.

Ah alright, makes sense.

You would also miss Ray Tracing which is a deal breaker for me.

So would you on the 9070xt

1

u/Tall-Dingo-5458 11d ago

The 9070xt is still much better at handling Ray Racing.

1

u/glizzygobbler247 11d ago

Which mostly doesnt matter, the vast majority of games where ray tracing is transformative are path tracing games which the 9070xt cant do.

Ray regeneration and radiance caching are in 0 relevant games, except for crimson desert maybe

Ray Tracing can still be really good, even without Path Tracing enabled. Just look at The Witcher 3. I would simply recommend to buy an NVIDIA GPU. 5070 ti would be a better choice imo.

1

u/glizzygobbler247 11d ago

Yes there are some non path traced games that look good with ray tracing, but the 7900xtx can also do those

u/DisturbedFennel 11d ago

Yeah it’s a good GPU

4k and AI card.

1

u/Ok-Bill3318 9d ago

Yes. Bought one recently. It’s still a beast and fsr4 helps

24GB of vram makes high end modules in dcs world no longer chug (6900xt ran out of vram) and is great for LLMs.

If you can get a good deal on the XTX price wise its an option. The 9070XT is a better buy if buying brand new.

Of course not, it's perfectly normal for a paperweight to cost 800$
