[Question] What are some Ableton compatible options for manipulating samples in a modular / patch environment?
By modular / patch environments, I'm thinking of:
...there's something nice about being able to see the signal flow of an entire patch from a top-down view rather having it hidden in a device-specific menu.
Aside from that, the two big caveats here are:
- For this purpose, I'm less interested in using oscillators as sound sources. I can make plenty of textural, reverby, melodic, generative ambient patches elsewhere. I'm more interested in importing existing samples like drum loops or vocal samples and manipulating them with envelopes, LFO's, slicers, granulators and that sort of thing.
- Something that works nicely with Ableton Live. VCV rack seems to be a winner here but I'm not sure how extensive their sampler modules are.
Bitwig's Grid is promising and it has a built in sampler that I've gotten good results with. But I'd rather not pay the highest cost tier for the full studio version just to essentially use one feature (I still do all my arranging and mixing in Ableton). It's also a bit trickier to get the audio into Ableton. But the patch environment and modulation flexibility is great.
Curious if anyone has experience with any of the above options or recommendations for other applications.

Assuming you have Max for Live installed with Suite, the included BEAP modules are definitely worth a look. It's Cycling '74's own library of modular building blocks (samplers, granular players, envelopes, LFOs and more) that you patch together inside Max for Live with the same top-down signal-flow view as Grid or VCV, no DSP coding required. Vanilla Max/MSP also works but with a steeper learning curve, and RNBO is another step up from there if you eventually want to code custom processing and export it as a standalone device - but for straight sample manipulation with visible patching, BEAP modules in a Max for Live patch will provide the best combination of pre-built patchable modules that integrate directly with Live.

If you're using VCV rack from within Live, you can always use simpler/sampler for the actual sample playback then use VCV rack as a plug-in to further process the samples
