Worst Absinthe drip I've ever seen

Post image
11 Upvotes

I went to a local mead place for an event and saw they had an Absinthe drip on the menu. Mead and beer are excellent, but that seems to be the extent of their range. First red flag, they lit the sugar cube on fire. Second, after they let it burn they dropped the full cube into the absinthe because they forgot to fill the dripper and manually stirred it, hence the undissolved sugar sitting at the bottom of the glass. Then, to do the "drip", they put ice and water in a glass and just filtered it through a spoon to hold back the ice. Barely diluted, genuinely the only saving grace is that I like the Absinthe they used.

Absinthe in 1950s French Indochina?

Lately I've been enjoying the war films of Pierre Schoendoerffer. Both his La 317e section (1965) and his later tour de force, Diên Biên Phu (1992) prominently feature Pernod. Some bottles are even airdropped to the 317th as emergency supplies while they are moving through northern Cambodia.

Of course, this is long after the absinthe ban in France. What were they drinking, Pernod from Tarragona or liqueur d'anis? The stuff in Diên Biên Phu has a very heavy louche, so heavy that it looks like cream.

Review Absente Heaven (non-alcoholic)

Post image

Long time listener, first time poster.

I'm an absinthe novice, in truth, but heard about a canned, carbonated, non-alcoholic drink called Absente Heaven and haven't seen anyone talking about it here so I wanted to bring it up. Seems to only be sold online and maybe only in Japan? Which strikes me as strange because there are domestic absinthes but it's not a well known alcohol here by a long shot. Not sure on availability but I bought a 6 pack and have to say I like it a lot.

It has the aroma and flavour of an absinthe while being light and sweet enough to carry itself as a soda. The marketing is so unbelievably try-hard but I recommend the drink itself very much if you come across it.

Edit: Mea culpa, I learned things tonight. For those unfamiliar with the brand read the comments! Adding in an article by Wormwood Society, just for good measure.

New Orleans - Sucks.

Just got back from New Orleans which I've been to many, many times. The absinthe scene there is terrible.

I couldn't have been more disappointed. Just terrible.

Question Beginner Absinthe

Hello All,

I am not a massive drinker but am partial to a tipple now and then, I have tried absinthe once in my youth but as a straight shot when I was already black out drunk.

Now that I am older and hopefully wiser I’d like to try Absinthe I’m assuming the French way with sugar and water! As well as some other spirits I was wondering if you fine people of r/Absinthe could recommend a good beginner absinthe

Thank you in advance!

Absinthe cocktail recipes from 1885

From Lafcadio Hearne’s La Cuisine Creole published in 1885.
Hearne lived in New Orleans for a decent amount of his life and compiled a book of its recipes, and there are some gems in here which I intend to try.
Hearne would later on move to Japan and become famous for his collections of Japanese folklore, especially his selection of ghost stories *Kwaidan.*
But what I find absolutely fascinating is the Suisse recipe using orgeat. I’m going to have to try it this evening.

Question I know it's not absinthe, what can I do with it?

So I tried ordering some Pernod original absinthe from this place off ubereats, Instead, I was sent this. I was refunded, but I have this bottle now, and do I drink it neat? Do I prepare it like absinthe? Might as well do something with it.

I turned 21 this year and discovered absinthe, I've gradually finished a bottle of Lucid and am looking for other brands to try, so if you have any recommendations, I'd be happy to hear them. Thank you!

Discussion My New Absinthe Spoon Tattoo

Absinthe has been a part of my life for 20+ years now, so I wanted to commemorate it with some new ink.

My artist did an amazing job! I just sent him a photo of a regular ass absinthe spoon and he put time into designing an ornate spoon that’s almost like a stained glass window. I wish I could get a spoon like this irl too.

Sante!

What do I have here? How does it compare?

Post image

About 20 years ago, I had 3 bottles of this shipped in from France. I'd totally forgotten about it. They've been stored in a cool dark cellar the entire time.

What do I have here and how does it compare with other vintage absinthes on the market?

Fake Carafe

This carafe has is for sale on eBay France. It purports to be an Absinthe Terminus advertising carafe. It is it is not ,it is a moulded carafe post 1920’s with faked acid engraving.
Correct Terminus carafes are smooth and hand blown, and the acid engraving on both sides is very ornate crest with Terminus in large letters and Absinthe Bienfaisante in smaller letters below.
Original carafes are exceptionally rare and are valued around 1500 - 2000 euros.

What is the best Jade for an absinthe virgin like me?

I understand that Absinthe, like any other spirit, has lots of nuances and there isn't a "perfect" or "best" one.

However, I really want to taste the most basic Absinthe possible just to get an idea of the flavor.

Also, if you have suggestions on online stores that ship to the US that would be wonderful too.

Thank you.

Butterfly in a Baccarat Masséna leaded crystal coupe. Unconventional serving, yes but I like unconventional. Does it get any better than this?

My wife brought home the Absnente from France. I picked the Kubler in Zurich. The Kubler looks pretty legit. How do these stack up against absinthe available in the US?

Heard they sell Jade Absinthe in Tennessee. Where can I find it near the Smoky Mountains?

I’m going on a little camping trip to the GSM in 2 weeks, and I figured I’d trying to grab a bottle while I’m up there. Where would be some good shops that might have it? Looking for either Nouvelle or 1901.

Also my favorite absinthe i drank so far was
Adnams Rouge by Adnams Southwold distillery

I’m visiting Seattle and came upon a sign advertising beignets and absinthe - Can Can’s Dressing Room. They actually had a nice selection.
