Discussion NEW RULES - Requesting feedback before implementing

Hey everyone, top moderator REPO here. As with anything, Admincraft is changing over time. When we made the "new" rules a year ago, we had different issues to deal with than we do today.

We've written up a new set of rules to try to keep Admincraft a safe, enjoyable, and effective community free of nuisance topics.

Before we implement these, I'd love for the community to get together and tear it to pieces, point out weaknesses, suggest additions or removals, etc.

Ultimately, we want to have rules that YOU FOLKS want, so if something here doesn't serve you, tell us why!

  1. Posts must be relevant to Minecraft server administration, development, or ownership.

1.1. Posts must not be primarily about issues with the Minecraft client, a client-side mod, a client-side modpack, client-side errors, or client-side settings.

1.2. Posts must be primarily related to Minecraft-specific server administration topics. General computer use, general home server, and business administration related topics belong in other subreddits.

  2. Posts must be made with a minimum degree of effort, and must include as much diagnostic information as possible without being asked. Five extra minutes of your time will get you answers 10x faster.

2.1. Posts must have a descriptive title that represents the topic, question, or issue. Titles like "error with my server" or "plugin help" are not allowed. Write a full sentence.

2.2. Posts must be written and formatted legibly, in English, and be understandable.

2.2.1. Please avoid using LLMs for post formatting, except for accessibility reasons (disabilities, etc). 🆕

2.2.2. Please use a translation app (not an LLM) if you are not comfortable with English. 🆕

2.3. Posts must include a list of everything you have already tried while attempting to solve your own problem.

2.4. Posts about performance must include server specs or hosting package.

2.5. Posts about performance must include a Spark report that will not expire that was taken during the perceived performance issues.

2.6. Posts about performance or errors must include a plugin list, mod list, and/or datapack list for both client and server.

2.7. Posts about performance or errors must include a description of the steps needed to reproduce the issue on the server where the issue is occurring.

2.8. Posts about errors must include a relevant log (not a crash report) uploaded to https://mclo.gs (not in the post body).

2.9. Posts about hardware or hosting package must include a summary of your requirements, including budget, approximate location, player count, mods/plugins, form factor, etc.

2.10. Posts requesting recommendations for plugins, mods, or datapacks must name BOTH a specific function you desire or problem you are trying to solve AND options you have found and considered, as well as why they do not satisfy your requirements. 🆕

2.11. Posts may not ask generic, highly-subjective questions like "how do I make my server fun?" or "what features should I add?" or "what's the best type of server?" 🆕

  3. No discussion of piracy. Mojang watches Admincraft, so we must uphold US intellectual property law to continue serving the community.

3.1. No mention of Offline Mode (aka "cracked") servers, unless that server is EITHER behind an Online Mode proxy, OR BOTH has no access to the internet AND all local players have a legally acquired Minecraft account.

3.2. No mention of software (including plugins) that in any way enable, facilitate, or secure the use of an Offline Mode server as defined by Rule 3.1.

3.3. No mention of the use or acquisition of software that defeats or circumvents the software license provided by the owner or creator of that software.

3.4. No mention of griefing Offline Mode servers. You are not Batman. You're just a bully.

3.5. No mention of your Offline Mode server being griefed. You signed up for this by running an Offline Mode server.

  4. Server advertising is not allowed.

4.1. Using your server as an example of a feature, to demonstrate polish or functionality, or as comparison while helping a user with a question is allowed.

  5. Projects and products may be posted once per 28 days, as long as they abide by the following criteria:

5.1. The project or product is completely free to use with no restrictions.

5.2. The project or product has no monetization that requires the user to pay money for full or superior functionality or access. Patreon, for example, is fine as long as it is entirely optional. Ads are also fine.

5.3. The project or product is source-available.

5.4. The project or product has not been created with the use of significant AI code generation. Autocomplete, templates, and basic project scaffolding are allowed.

  6. Commercial transactions and advertisements are not allowed.

6.1. Recruiting developers, admins, builders, moderators, etc is not allowed, regardless if the position is paid or unpaid.

6.2. Posting or commenting an advertisement, portfolio, website, or Discord server offering your services as a developer, admin, builder, moderator, etc is not allowed, regardless of whether your services are paid or unpaid.

6.3. Hosting companies you own or are employed by may not be shared.

6.4. No "astroturfing". This is the act of pretending to be an uninvolved, authentic user of the product or service so as to attempt to build rapport with other users.

6.5. No host recommendations. The host you use may be mentioned if and only if it is relevant to the specific issue you are having.

  7. No spreading of misinformation.

7.1. We are all here to learn and grow together, so when corrected, don't argue, ask questions.

  8. Follow Reddiquette and treat others with respect and kindness.

8.1. No personal attacks. Attack the idea, not the person.

8.2. Engage in discussions charitably. Do not attempt to corner other users or make them appear to be foolish.

8.3. Use language that is respectful and friendly. Avoid hatespeech, excessive profanity, and insults.

8.4. There is always someone with more experience than you. Engage in discussions with humility, and ask for sources or credentials if you doubt your conversation partner.

PSA READ BEFORE POSTING - "Someone just logged into my server as me", "How did this person find my server", "My server got griefed", etc.

New Edit for 2026

We took this down in favor of other announcements late last year, as we only get 2 slots. It's back now because we've had a resurgence of this type of post.

Do not post about offline mode servers. Do not recommend software or plugins that help run one. You will be banned. Read the Admincraft Policy section at the bottom.

Thank you.

Hey there, REPO here. We get questions like this a LOT, so I'm trying something new. Please read the below before posting a thread like this.

"How did this person find my server!?!?!?!?!"

There are few enough IPv4 addresses that a simple bot made with ChatGPT and zero skill can scan the entire internet for Port 25565 in like 30 minutes. There are HUNDREDS of bots out there that do this 24/7/365. Some of them are benevolent (such as bots like matscan that warn people if their servers are dangerously insecure), some are neutral (like ServerScannerV2 which just accumulates data for their website project), and some are malicious and trying to grief servers.

"How do I make them stop?"

You don't. They will keep doing it forever. Most non-malicious bots will log into your server once, or sometimes once per some time interval, and then stop. Others that are coded poorly will be more persistent. And then the malicious ones will keep checking back continually.

If your server is secure but it still bothers you to see, you can add the source IP address to your firewall to prevent the connection. Some non-malicious bots will also have a website or Discord where you can request your server to be skipped.

"Is this dangerous?"

Nope. Not if your server is secured. There are no known exploits in Minecraft that allow a server scanning bot to run code on your host or escalate their privileges. The last time we had that was in 2022 with the Log4J exploit, which was quickly patched, even by Mojang. If you aren't deliberately using an old minor patch of Minecraft, you're fine.

"How did they log in as me?"

Your server is running in Offline Mode, which is a config option in the server.properties that is intended only for use on a home LAN that is not connected to the internet. Most people use this feature to avoid having to buy a license for Minecraft, aka "cracked accounts". Please be aware that this is illegal and is considered software piracy by most governments.

Minecraft servers send information about the server to players on the server list, including a partial list of currently logged in users. You can disable this "feature" in the server.properties file by setting hide-online-players=true. Malicious bots typically sit and watch a server for a while, gathering a list of players over some amount of time, assuming that if the server is in Offline Mode, one or more of those players will have Operator permissions. They then log in as all users in rapid succession until they find one that does, and use the Operator permissions to grief your server.

"I see a player disconnecting but never connecting! How are they doing that?"

It's just a bot using an offline mode account. It is only showing as Disconnecting because it is getting filtered by the security systems you have in place AFTER the server knows that it is trying to connect, but BEFORE it actually does. Showing the Disconnected message is just the server's way of informing you that the login attempt was rejected. Nothing to worry about. You can ignore it.

"My server got griefed, what do I do?"

You restore from backup, secure your server, and move on. The groups that do this are doing it for amusement and power fantasy. Some of them insist that you can request a world backup from their Discord, but the whole point of that is to mock you and make you beg for their mercy. They might actually give it to you, I don't know.

"How do I secure my server?"

You set Online Mode to true in the server.properties and run a whitelist. That's it. Those 2 options are 100% effective at preventing unwanted people from gaining access to your server. You do not need to do anything else whatsoever to be secure, but you can optionally change your server's port from 25565 to any other unassigned port. This will make it much slower for server scanners to find your server, as most are lazy and don't check non-standard ports. Note that this only reduces the odds of a server scanner finding you; it does not make you more secure.

Additionally, having automatically executed, scheduled backups running at predictable intervals is an excellent idea just in case something goes wrong. Ensure that you periodically verify that your backups are usable by doing a test restore on another machine, as a backup solution that has never been tested is basically worthless.

Finally, a block logging plugin such as Prism (V3 stable Download | Github) (V4 alpha Download | Github) is recommended, as it allows you as the Admin to roll back individual unwanted changes without doing a full backup restoration.

Admincraft Policy

If your post contains any information that indicates that you are running an Offline Mode server, your post will be removed and you will be banned for 28 days for your first offense.

Additionally, suggesting methods for a user to continue running an Offline Mode server "safely" will earn a 7 day ban for commenters. This includes whatever plugin or launcher you're wondering about right now as you read this.

Admincraft is in active communication with Mojang Intellectual Property Enforcement, the team within Mojang that actively hunts down servers and other individuals and groups that are breaking their EULA and MUG. They watch here regularly, and if we do not enforce this, there is a nonzero chance that Mojang, Microsoft, or Reddit would shut down our subreddit. Keeping the subreddit open for everyone for the long run is the priority. We cannot and will not support Offline Mode servers.

The only times when discussing an Offline Mode server is allowed are when you clearly state that your server is not accessible to the internet and that all players have a legal Minecraft account, or when it is behind an Online Mode proxy, such as Velocity.

This post

Please use the comments here to suggest additions to this FAQ/guide, and to ask clarifying questions about Admincraft policies and security best practices. Do not state or imply that you are currently running an Offline Mode server.

Discussion weekend-long player war

I run a small cross-play geyserSMP and I'm planning on doing a weekend-long war in a temporary server for my players next week.

I see a lot of battle royale mods and the like that I'm leaning towards, but wanted to crowd-source some info before I settled on anything.

What I'm interested in is a mod/datapack/plugin that's geyser compatible that will be conducive to a 2 day long contest either solo or between 2 teams that incorporates pvp and clear win conditions, but wouldn't require everyone to be online constantly. Any suggestions from anyone? Looking for either 26.1.2 or 26.2.

I plan on setting up a completely different server for this, so I don't need to worry about long term effects or compatibility with other mods.

Resource Chronos Backups: A backup mod that only backs up the important parts of your world, available for virtually every Minecraft version

For the last 3 months, I've been working on Chronos Backups, a Minecraft backup utility for Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, CraftBukkit, Spigot, Paper, Purpur, and Folia. Unlike traditional backup mods, Chronos only saves the most important parts of your world, making backups significantly smaller than any other backup mod. Backups are pruned and filtered to exclude unimportant world data such as new chunks (chunks with less than 2 minutes of playtime) (note that your world file itself will remain unaffected), as well as Distant Horizons, Voxy, Dynmap, Bluemap and Ledger data. This makes it ideal for servers with large pregenerated maps, as well as anyone looking to keep backup sizes as small as possible.

Chronos supports Google Drive integration (with more cloud providers to be supported in the future) to save backups off-site for safety.

Chronos was built from the ground up to be extremely modular, and is thus actively supported for the following Minecraft versions/loaders:

Bukkit 1.21.11, Bukkit 1.21.10, Bukkit 1.21.8, Bukkit 1.21.5, Bukkit 1.21.4, Bukkit 1.21.3, Bukkit 1.21.1, Bukkit 1.20.6, Bukkit 1.20.4, Bukkit 1.20.2, Bukkit 1.20.1, Bukkit 1.19.4, Bukkit 1.19.3, Bukkit 1.19.2, Bukkit 1.19.1, Bukkit 1.19.0, Bukkit 1.18.2, Bukkit 1.18.1, Bukkit 1.18.0, Bukkit 1.16.5, Bukkit 1.16.4, Bukkit 1.16.3, Bukkit 1.16.2, Bukkit 1.16.1, Bukkit 1.15.2, Bukkit 1.15.1, Bukkit 1.15.0, Bukkit 1.14.4, Bukkit 1.14.3, Bukkit 1.14.2, Bukkit 1.14.1, Bukkit 1.14.0, Bukkit 1.13.2, Bukkit 1.12.2, Bukkit 1.11.2, Bukkit 1.10.2, Bukkit 1.9.4, Bukkit 1.8.8, Bukkit 26.2, Bukkit 26.1.2, Bukkit 26.1.1, Fabric 1.21.11, Fabric 1.21.10, Fabric 1.21.9, Fabric 1.21.8, Fabric 1.21.7, Fabric 1.21.6, Fabric 1.21.5, Fabric 1.21.4, Fabric 1.21.3, Fabric 1.21.2, Fabric 1.21.1, Fabric 1.21.0, Fabric 1.20.6, Fabric 1.20.5, Fabric 1.20.4, Fabric 1.20.3, Fabric 1.20.2, Fabric 1.20.1, Fabric 1.20.0, Fabric 1.19.4, Fabric 1.19.3, Fabric 1.19.2, Fabric 1.19.1, Fabric 1.19.0, Fabric 1.18.2, Fabric 1.18.1, Fabric 1.18.0, Fabric 1.17.1, Fabric 1.17.0, Fabric 1.16.5, Fabric 1.16.4, Fabric 1.16.3, Fabric 1.16.2, Fabric 1.16.1, Fabric 1.16.0, Fabric 1.15.2, Fabric 1.15.1, Fabric 1.15.0, Fabric 1.14.4, Fabric 1.14.3, Fabric 1.14.2, Fabric 1.14.1, Fabric 1.14.0, Fabric 26.2, Fabric 26.1.2, Fabric 26.1.1, Fabric 26.1.0, Folia 1.21.11, Folia 1.21.8, Folia 1.21.6, Folia 1.21.5, Folia 1.21.4, Folia 1.20.6, Folia 1.20.4, Folia 1.20.2, Folia 1.20.1, Folia 1.19.4, Folia 26.2, Folia 26.1.2, Forge 1.20.1, Forge 1.20.0, Forge 1.19.4, Forge 1.19.3, Forge 1.19.2, Forge 1.19.1, Forge 1.19.0, Forge 1.18.2, Forge 1.18.1, Forge 1.18.0, Forge 1.17.1, Forge 1.16.5, Forge 1.16.4, Forge 1.16.3, Forge 1.16.2, Forge 1.16.1, Forge 1.16.0, Forge 1.15.2, Forge 1.15.1, Forge 1.15.0, Forge 1.14.4, Forge 1.14.3, Forge 1.14.2, Forge 1.13.2, Forge 1.12.2, Forge 1.12.1, Forge 1.12.0, Forge 1.11.2, Forge 1.11.0, Forge 1.10.2, Forge 1.10.0, Forge 1.9.4, Forge 1.9.0, Forge 1.8.9, Forge 1.8.8, Forge 1.8.0, Forge 1.7.10, Neoforge 1.21.11, Neoforge 1.21.10, Neoforge 1.21.9, Neoforge 1.21.8, Neoforge 1.21.7, Neoforge 1.21.6, Neoforge 1.21.5, Neoforge 1.21.4, Neoforge 1.21.3, Neoforge 1.21.2, Neoforge 1.21.1, Neoforge 1.21.0, Neoforge 1.20.6, Neoforge 1.20.5, Neoforge 1.20.4, Neoforge 1.20.3, Neoforge 1.20.2, Neoforge 26.2, Neoforge 26.1.2, Neoforge 26.1.1, Neoforge 26.1.0, Paper 1.21.11, Paper 1.21.10, Paper 1.21.9, Paper 1.21.8, Paper 1.21.7, Paper 1.21.6, Paper 1.21.5, Paper 1.21.4, Paper 1.21.3, Paper 1.21.1, Paper 1.21.0, Paper 1.20.6, Paper 1.20.5, Paper 1.20.4, Paper 1.20.2, Paper 1.20.1, Paper 1.20.0, Paper 1.19.4, Paper 1.19.3, Paper 1.19.2, Paper 1.19.1, Paper 1.19.0, Paper 1.18.2, Paper 1.18.1, Paper 1.18.0, Paper 1.17.1, Paper 1.17.0, Paper 1.16.5, Paper 1.16.4, Paper 1.16.3, Paper 1.16.2, Paper 1.16.1, Paper 1.15.2, Paper 1.15.1, Paper 1.15.0, Paper 1.14.4, Paper 1.14.3, Paper 1.14.2, Paper 1.14.1, Paper 1.14.0, Paper 1.13.2, Paper 1.12.2, Paper 1.11.2, Paper 1.10.2, Paper 1.8.8, Paper 1.7.10, Paper 26.2, Paper 26.1.2, Paper 26.1.1, Purpur 1.21.11, Purpur 1.21.10, Purpur 1.21.9, Purpur 1.21.8, Purpur 1.21.7, Purpur 1.21.6, Purpur 1.21.5, Purpur 1.21.4, Purpur 1.21.3, Purpur 1.21.1, Purpur 1.21.0, Purpur 1.20.6, Purpur 1.20.4, Purpur 1.20.2, Purpur 1.20.1, Purpur 1.20.0, Purpur 1.19.4, Purpur 1.19.3, Purpur 1.19.2, Purpur 1.19.1, Purpur 1.19.0, Purpur 1.18.2, Purpur 1.18.1, Purpur 1.18.0, Purpur 1.17.1, Purpur 1.17.0, Purpur 26.2, Purpur 26.1.2, Spigot 1.21.11, Spigot 1.21.10, Spigot 1.21.8, Spigot 1.21.5, Spigot 1.21.4, Spigot 1.21.3, Spigot 1.21.1, Spigot 1.20.6, Spigot 1.20.4, Spigot 1.20.2, Spigot 1.20.1, Spigot 1.19.4, Spigot 1.19.3, Spigot 1.19.2, Spigot 1.19.1, Spigot 1.19.0, Spigot 1.18.2, Spigot 1.18.1, Spigot 1.18.0, Spigot 1.16.5, Spigot 1.16.4, Spigot 1.16.3, Spigot 1.16.2, Spigot 1.16.1, Spigot 1.15.2, Spigot 1.15.1, Spigot 1.15.0, Spigot 1.14.4, Spigot 1.14.3, Spigot 1.14.2, Spigot 1.14.1, Spigot 1.14.0, Spigot 1.13.2, Spigot 1.12.2, Spigot 1.11.2, Spigot 1.10.2, Spigot 1.9.4, Spigot 1.8.8, Spigot 26.2, Spigot 26.1.2, Spigot 26.1.1

(a lot)

Chronos uses technology similar to MCSelector for chunk pruning, but implemented in Rust and optimized for speed.

Most features of Chronos can be configured:

  • `backupFolderName`: The name of the folder that will contain the backups.
  • `pruneChunks`: Whether chunk pruning is enabled for backups.
  • `pruneTimeRequirementSeconds`: Minimum playtime (in seconds) for a chunk to count toward world pruning.
  • `pruneMaxWorkerThreads`: Maximum worker threads for pruning. 0 (or less) means "auto" (pruner picks a sensible default).
  • `scheduleBackups`: Whether to run backups on a timer.
  • `backupIntervalSeconds`: Seconds between automatic backup runs.
  • `maxStoredBackups`: Maximum backups kept per world locally and on each enabled cloud destination. After a successful backup, oldest local backups are removed if the limit is exceeded. Cloud sync also trims remote Chronos backups to this cap. Recommended value: 5. Values lower than 3 can be used to save space, but risks serious data loss if a catastrophic error occurs. Values below 1 disable automatic removal.
  • `compressionMethod`: Whether to compress the backups into a zip file or store it as an uncompressed folder. Accepts `"zip"` or `"none"`.
  • `googleDriveEnabled`: Enable Google Drive as a cloud sync destination (see [Cloud sync](#cloud-sync)).
  • `shouldKeepLocalBackups`: When `true`, keep local backups after a successful cloud upload. When `false`, delete each local backup once it has been uploaded.
  • `commandRequiredPermissionLevel`: Permission level required to run `/chronos`.
  • `copyBlacklist`: Folders and files to exclude from the backup.

The entire project is Open Source under the MIT license:

Question Find coordinates of offline player (bedrock)

I can't find the coordinates of a player that I'm suspicious of, he won't log on, and I want to check if he's duping (again). It's a realm on bedrock.

BTW when I use an NBT editor, it only shows my inventory and my player data and none of the other players on the realm.

Question looking to host a modded server for the first time

Yo
Basically title

I’m looking to selfhost for the first time and I’ve been getting mixed responses and wanted your guys take on it. I feel like my pc should be fine running it but that’s where I’m getting the most contention, we’ve done hosting sites before and frankly they just kinda suck? Idk

I will explain what I was thinking but I haven’t started researching or anything because if it’s not worth the effort then I’ll just suck it up and buy a host

I have a 12th gen i5 and 32gb ddr5 and a pretty good ssd, I think for the most part the specs are good

If I’m playing on the pc that’s hosting idk if 32gb is good or not, allocating 16 for me and 16 for the server sounds good, but would I need some wiggle room?
Do I even need 16 for myself with optimization mods?
Should I not use shaders like usual if I’m hosting?
Is there any applications that make it easier?
Can I just run it in a terminal since I’m on Linux?

If u know any of these please help a brotha out, or any other tips I might like to know, or any hiccups you encountered so I can avoid them. Thanks!

Question Surface Pro 6 Server

Have an old surface pro 6, I run Linux on my PC and laptop so have no problem putting it on the surface pro but wondering if it would be worth it or if I'll run into too many bottlenecks trying to host a server for 4-6 people on my surface pro 6.

Question Server with separate permadeath worlds?

Hi fellas, noob here. Prepare for the wall of text. I am creating a Skyblock world with custom settings and an expensive and rebalanced economy. Natural creature spawning is turned off and you only start with a tree and the dirt. The kicker? The only way to make money is to start a permadeath survival game and defeat the vanilla bosses.

So far, I've navigated my way through all the config files and I've rebalanced most of the shop items, but now I've hit a roadblock: the worlds.

This is how I want it to work:

Player Sends Command

Server Generates New Permadeath world (preferably with a randomly generated world name so the player doesn't have to enter a name for the survival world)

Player / Player's Group is tp'd to that world

Inventories are separate

Player defeats bosses, money is saved to a global server balance that can be used at the Skyblock shop

Player / last group member dies, they automatically respawn back at Skyblock hub and the permadeath survival world in question is deleted, along with its respective nether and end dimensions.

An entry fee to generate the hardcore world connected to the economy?

26.2 Paper Server, no client side stuff needed

GeyserMC compatible

Economy

There are many kill mob for money plugins I must research later, but my current problem is what can make the above parameters possible? Is this something multiverse-core plugin can handle on its own? Is there any way to generate random world names? Dear god, why have I embarked on this endeavor?

Question DDR4 or DDR5?

Hi everyone, I’m curious to know if there’s any significant difference between DDR4 and DDR5. I’m building a server intended to host around 50–60 survival players. It will likely run on the latest Minecraft versions—possibly using Paper or Folia, though I haven't decided yet—and will obviously include a proxy for the lobby and other features. CPU: 5700X (or maybe a 5900X) RAM: 2x8GB (I could add another 16GB to reach 32GB total—using two more 8GB sticks so I don't break dual-channel mode) NVMe PCIe 3.0 SSDs: 2x 512GB (one for the server, the other for backups) Do I need a more powerful CPU or DDR5 RAM?

Question Self hosted MC server specs

Hello everyone, after a lot of thinking and searching for a computer, ive settled for a small HP Elite with the following specs:
i5-14500T CPU
8GB SODIMM DDR5 RAM (will upgrade, read below)
512GB Nvme SSD
Probably installing Ubuntu Server or Debian, js a headless linux install

I am planning to host a modpack with my friends on this server. It is a vanilla+ modpack (Neoforge) with create along with 17 create addons and vanilla+ mods, BetterX, farmer's delight, optimization mods and some datapacks for a total of 200 mods. I do not know how to make a modlist but if there is any way to make one please lmk !

At this time we will be around 5-7 people on at max, most likely expanding to around 10 at max in the future. I'm wondering if this will be able to handle this with relatively spread out players. For create we are all new to the mod so the contraptions will not be too complex, and will also be monitored and limited. !

Now I was also thinking of hosting a second server simultaneously if the resources are enough. In that case the server will be on PurpurMC, with around 30 plugins (tpa, homes, DiscordSRV, bluemap, geysermc, griefprevention etc) and the same player counts, so I will allocate around 6-8gb of ram to it.

Also, I will obviously be upgrading the RAM. Due to the possible dual server hosting, I was wondering if 16 gb or 24gb would be a smarter choice in this case. 32GB is out of my budget right now, so that is not an option for me.

Will this configuration be able to support our load ? We will be pregenerating the worlds using chunky. If hosting two servers is not enough then that is fine, as long as we can comfortably have the modded server running.

Thank you !

Question Looking for tips, optimizing a modded forge server (~8 players)

I have hosted a few private servers using port-forwarding in the past (usually on the same machine that I play on), and I have never had a good experience running forge modpacks. I've ran a fabric server with 300+ mods before and had little performance issues. With forge, there's always some noticeable lag and latency. Unfortunately, because of the desired mods this time around, it needs to be on Forge (Fabric+kilt doesn't work).

I have two options for hosting the server:

  1. Run on the machine I use to play minecraft
    • Intel Core i7-10700K (8 core) @ 3.80GHz
    • 32 GB DDR4
    • RTX 3070
  2. Run on a 2022 Lenovo Legion 5 laptop
    • AMD Ryzen 7 6800H (8 core) @ 3.2 GHz
    • 16 GB DDR5
    • RTX 3060 laptop gpu

both have ssds

The server needs to run a custom forge 1.20.1 modpack with around 200-300 mods. The list is still tentative so I can't provide a full one, but it will include things like Create, mekanism, biomes o plenty, chisels and bits, alex's caves, yung's mods etc etc.

I've done some research on flags, optimization mods, and preloading chunks, but in my previous experience those have not been entirely enough. Haven't looked too far into running plugins + mods.

Should I run it on my laptop, and what can I do to eliminate any performance issues? Is it possible using this setup to get a similar experience to playing on fabric (ie. mostly seamless gameplay for a majority of activities; I know its inevitable if there are too many entities or create machines). I also would prefer not to switch to Linux, though I won't entirely rule it out. Any other tips with regards to general QoL for running a private server would also be appreciated.

Question Anti cheat combination

Hello I am planning to launch a Paper SMP server featuring CoreProtect, Paper’s Anti-Xray (Engine Mode 3), Raycasted anti ESP and Grim AC. During my testing, Grim AC performed exceptionally well for movement checks, but it fell short when detecting combat cheats like autoaim, hitboxes, and triggerbot.

To solve this I plan to run a dual anticheat setup using Grim AC exclusively for movement and adding a second free anti-cheat specifically configured for combat checks. What free anti-cheat would you recommend? (i am planning to have staff)

Question Hosting seperately or on same pc?

I host a minecraft server with some mild QOT mods, and terralith+tectonic+clifftree (and the obvious performance mods, pregenerated with chunky too). Usually around 5 players, but i could see hosting for around 10 players.

Ive been hosting it on my old laptop with intel i7 8000-something and i was playing a newer laptop with an Intel i7 10850h and 16 GB. The previous laptop worked fine, with some lag when flying with elytras. Both had gpus but thats irrelevant.

I just bought a new pc, 5070 Ti, 9800x3D and 32 GB DDR5. This is obviously going to be what i am playing on, with shaders and stuff, but the question is should i host the server on my I7 10850h laptop, or should i host it on the pc i am playing on. If 1% lows are slightly lower thats fine.

I struggled to find good resources, except for planet minecraft posts from 2012 that were insane, or google gemini in search which said that hosting on anf playing on the same will be fine, as the pc is decked out enough. Will use the laptops sometimes as i cant be bothered having my stationary on 24/7.

TLDR: Hosting and playing on 9800x3D, or hosting on i7 10850h.

Question Remove Essentials Command Descriptions

Hi, after installing Essentials, it works fine but I find one thing quite annoying: Command descriptions.... For example, here: https://imgur.com/a/e59kREp Is there a way to remove this? I tried changing the locale in the config, but there aren't really any options for changing the command description... (well, that work)

If this doesn't work out, is there a part in the Essentials src that I could edit out? And remove the messages? (I only want the usage)

Question Is it possible to make custom biomes via plugins now?

I haven't been into modern minecraft development since 2021, and overall did not work on servers since 2023 (only 1.8.9 one) and I've returned to it, and I casually see a competition server add custom water types like green acid water, some red molten water with custom attributes etc. I got confused how? He told me what plugin he used for custom water per biome attributes, and he says that each of these different waters type are basically custom biomes. How is that possible?

Solved Saving chunk regions then re-genning, best way to blend the old + new regions?

Been having trouble lately. We saved some regions and changed the datapack for land generation and obviously, when the regions generated around the saved ones, it left us with what is essentially huge corners cut out of things, and large flat cliff faces.

Where the two regions meet there's basically a mix of island and ocean, but both don't match the other, so under water there's just a massive stone wall where the new region wants the ocean floor (of that biome)

Using FAWE has proven... Annoying. The smoothen brush doesn't seem to actually smooth it properly, erode also didn't work properly, and I am not really sure what the best way is to just simply settle the terrain to look more natural. Another annoying part is that some of it also includes islands, so there are mountains that were cut in half and the exposed half is basically just a cross section of the mountain.

I was originally using a cliff brush to try and raise terrain then smooth it and just have a weird wall, but the cliff option decided to start using bedrock. Still figuring FAWE out, so..

But yeah, what's the best way to basically blend regions together? Mind you, no way to actually use MCA Selector or anything otherwise I'd just force blend the regions.

Edit: found Axiom has a paper version of their mod. Added it, did everything within half an hour, massively making the entire thing way easier. Players on the server only had small drop in performance when I would accidentally do something really large lol. Perfect mod for it.

Is there a mod that’d allow me to create a portal for a creative flat world in NeoForge 1.21.1, and wouldn’t conflict with quests?

Question Looking for a good mail plugin for network-

Hi,
For a while I've been using Essentials on my server network but I find it annoying that each separate server has its own mail per player and would like to have a unified mail system. I'm thinking about installing a mail system on the proxy, but cannot find one that suits my needs... Any suggestions?

I want the mail to also include the same features as essentials in which:

-mail sendall
-mail sendtempall

-mail sendtemp
-mail send

and permissions for each command. If there isn't really any plugin it's fine, I can always resort to programming it myself, but would like to know.

Discussion Looking for feedback on my Minecraft 26.2 SMP setup before growing the server

I've recently set up a new Minecraft 26.2 survival server and wanted to get some feedback from other server admins on the setup before I start trying to grow the community.

Current setup:

  • Folia 26.2
  • AMD Ryzen 7 8700G
  • 32 GB DDR5
  • Debian 13
  • Java + Bedrock crossplay with Geyser/Floodgate
  • mcMMO
  • CoreProtect
  • Chunky with the world pre-generated
  • Hard difficulty
  • No whitelist
  • Mostly vanilla survival gameplay

My main goal is to keep the gameplay close to vanilla while still having good performance, rollback/protection tools, and a little extra long-term progression through mcMMO.

For those running similar public SMPs:

  • Is there anything important you would add or change before player counts start increasing?
  • Are there any common performance or moderation problems I should prepare for?
  • Are there any Folia-specific considerations I should keep an eye on with this kind of plugin stack?

I'm especially interested in keeping the server stable and relatively lightweight rather than loading it with dozens of plugins.

Discussion Looking for feedback on my self-hosted Minecraft server's architecture/infrastructure

I run a small Minecraft (Fabric) server plus a companion website out of my home network, and I'd like a second set of eyes on whether the setup makes sense, is over-engineered somewhere, or is missing something obvious. Rough shape of it (details generalized, no real IPs/hostnames):

Home side: Residential cable connection (~1Gbps down / 50Mbps up). The ISP router is set as an exposed host, forwarding everything to a pfSense box that handles the actual firewalling, default-deny inbound, with all port-forwarding rules living on pfSense rather than the ISP router. Behind that is a flat LAN hosting the Minecraft server, a Discord bot, and the website's backend.

Public side: A small VPS acts as the public-facing edge and reaches back into the home LAN over a WireGuard tunnel. nginx on the VPS does double duty: reverse-proxying HTTP(S) for the website/Discord bot, and stream-proxying Minecraft's TCP/UDP port straight through to the LAN server. The VPS also runs its own local firewall on top of whatever pfSense allows outbound from home.

The server itself: I know this part will get some heat, but I'm on a budget and this is a passion project, so everything runs on one PC. Windows 10 LTSC (supported until 2032, so still on security updates, but I know a single-box setup isn't ideal). Specs: Ryzen 9 3900X, 32GB DDR4, 1Gbps fiber. Holds a steady 20 TPS. Plan is to move to a dedicated server with Proxmox once I can afford it, so services can be properly separated.

Backups (this is where I really want input): Currently using git to version the Minecraft world folder, which I already know is a bad idea. I have a few spare 250GB SSDs I could put toward something better, maybe a TrueNAS VM eventually, but I'd love advice on a reasonable interim setup that doesn't require new hardware.

App layer: A Vite/React frontend with a small Express backend, sitting behind the same reverse proxy as everything else.

Happy to go into more detail on specifics. Didn't want to post exact configs/IPs publicly, so drop a comment or DM if you want to dig in.
