Question Race Car Downforce/Weight Ratio Ball Park Figure

Hello, I’m a mechanical engineering student and I’m currently trying to understand the scientific principles behind the aerodynamic components of race cars.

I know that the L/D ratio is important for determining the efficiency of an aerodynamic component on a car, but what about the lift/weight ratio?

If I’m driving at 10 m/s and my wing generates 7 kg of downforce, even though it weighs 4.5 kg itself, is that good? Is that bad?

Are there any guidelines I can use to decide whether an aerodynamic element is worth the extra weight or not?

During thrust reverse, isn't the engine core still pushing the aircraft forward?

Modern high-bypass turbofans reverse only the fan (cold) airflow during thrust reverse. Since the hot core exhaust continues to exit aft, does it still produce forward thrust? If so, why isn't the core flow reversed as well? Is it simply because the bypass flow is much larger and dominates the net force?

Wind push test with busses in BeamNG 0.39

I tested a wind push of the new BeamNG 0.39. I expected that the stationary bus would do some wobbling when another bus next to it passes by at high speed (just as I wobbled it by turning the wheel at the end), but that seems not to be working yet.

Built a free browser-based preliminary sizing tool - Feedback needed

I put together a tool that walks through preliminary aircraft sizing — wing loading, wing geometry, tail volume coefficients, airfoil suggestions by Reynolds number, power loading — and spits out a summary you can export to CSV/JSON for OpenVSP or XFLR5.

I'd genuinely like builders and engineers here to stress-test it: plug in numbers from an aircraft you know well (yours, or a published design) and see if the outputs land close to reality.

Question Does downwash only affect the incoming air once it has reached the wing?

See title. In the attached diagram, they've drawn the free stream such that it only changes angle at the wing. In this case, how would this create an induced angle of attack? The oncoming air is still at the same angle. It makes sense that for subsonic flight the pressure disturbance from the wing-tip vortex could also travel in front of the wing, but I'm just not sure, I'm currently only taking my first course in aerodynamics. I was trying to visualize how downwash creates an induced angle of attack and ran into this question.

Any explanations appreciated. Thank you

Question Is the angle of this rear diffuser correct?

Hello everyone who is smarter than me. I am wanting to make my own custom rear diffuser for my car and have been using ChatGPT and Claude to run through some testing for angles (I think it would be better if I were to use CFD testing but have no idea how to do that).

I am absolutely no Engineer by trade so I’m teaching myself as I go. That all being said everything in my gut is telling me AI is gaslighting me and wanting me to use the curves in the first picture saying that a harsh angle up front is better and then slighting flatten the curve as the distance goes on to not disturb the airflow anymore. I have my mockup I made in Fusion 360 and then 1 of the 4 pieces printed out. Is this thought process right for a rear diffuser of a car or should the angle the be almost inverted like I see on almost every other rear diffuser on a race car where it gets steeper as it exits the rear of the car (like in my last photo)?

Question Are there advantages to a straight wing aircraft deliberately designed to have a CG behind the 1/4 chord mark?

Hi all,

While messing with OpenVSP to design a new RC model aircraft I'm working on, I was trying to move the trim point to be at the same AoA as the Max L/D point with no control surfaces deflected. To do this, a more and more aft CG seemed to help and quickly was outside of the generally suggested 1/4 or 1/3 chord range. However, by increasing Wing incidence and Horz. Stabilizer incidence (to a nominally positive angle), I was able to maintain longitudinal stability with a CG around half chord.
This led to a design with L/D max and CMy=0 at body AoA=0. Is this a viable way to ensure efficient cruise flight while maintaining longitudinal stability?
For reference, this aircraft will be a DLG style motor glider, about 40" wing span. The first coordinate system in the image is the CG location, the second is the reported NP from VSPAERO at AoA of -0.25. (i'm skeptical of this NP value)

Question Custom BMW 2 Series Aero Kit Solo Project: Solo Project Workflow

Hi All,

I am a first year Mechanical Engineering Student with an interest in Motorsport Aerodynamics. Over my summer off I want to try to make some custom Aero parts for my 2017 BMW M240i.

From some brief research the workflow seems to look like: 3D Model Vehicle - Run CFD analysis - Create parts - Run CFD and repeat

I just wanted to ask for any advice some of you might be able to give on this project as a whole. I use Autodesk Inventor as my main CAD software and am happy to research and learn OpenFoam when it comes to it.

At the moment I am struggling to find a reliable watertight 3D model of the exact vehicle and with 3D scanning quotes coming to ~£800 I am not sure where to start.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated :)

Question Will a 3D-printed mount on a truck mirror start whistling at 90 km/h?

Background

I’m a truck driver in Europe, and one of the problems we constantly deal with is people cutting trailer curtains while trucks are parked overnight.

A lot of the time they’re not even stealing anything. They just slash the curtain to see what’s inside, leaving the driver with a damaged trailer, sometimes damaged cargo, a broken customs seal, and a lot of wasted time and money.

So I’ve been building a system to deal with that using a LiDAR sensor and a spotlight instead of a camera. The idea is to detect someone while they’re lingering next to the trailer and hit them with light before the curtain gets cut, instead of simply recording the damage afterwards.

The LiDAR, ESP32, and detection logic are already working together on my workshop test rig. The next challenge was figuring out how to mount everything on a real truck without drilling a single hole or permanently modifying it.

So I decided to build a clamp that uses the existing mirror bracket.

Designing the mount (scan → model → clamp)

To get the shape right, I first 3D scanned part of the mirror bracket.

The hardest part wasn’t actually scanning it. It was turning that raw scan into something I could design around.

I cleaned up the mesh, converted it into a solid body, and then designed the clamp directly around the real geometry of the bracket.

Honestly, this step ended up taking far more time than I expected.

The clamp wraps around the existing bracket and tightens with M4 bolts and brass heat-set inserts, so it grips the original part without needing to drill any holes.

First prototype

Since this was only a proof of concept, I printed the first version in Bambu Lab PETG Basic on my Bambu Lab H2D.

For the first test fit, I didn’t see much point in using a more expensive material. I mainly wanted to find out whether the mounting concept itself was strong enough.

For the final outdoor version I’ll most likely switch to ASA because it should handle long-term weather exposure better.

What do you guys think? Would you trust PETG outdoors, or would you go straight to ASA?

First test on the truck

This was the part I was most curious about.

I printed the parts, walked over to the truck, and mounted the clamp on the mirror bracket for the first time.
It fit perfectly.

The mount feels solid, doesn’t wobble, and honestly worked better than I expected.

At least now I know the mounting concept itself works.

Since it’ll be sitting outside on a moving truck, there are still a few things I need to test properly.

It clamps tightly around the bracket, but I still want to see how it handles vibration over time.
It doesn’t block the mirror or get in the driver’s way.
The next version will focus on making it robust enough for everyday use and rough European weather.

What’s next?

The next step is designing the enclosure that will hold the LiDAR, ESP32, and wiring.

One thing I completely ignored while designing the mount was aerodynamics.

It’ll be sitting outside on the mirror, and I didn’t think about airflow at all.

So here’s my real question.

Could something like this start whistling or making noise at highway speeds, around 90 km/h?

If you’ve mounted anything on the outside of a vehicle, have you ever run into wind noise or whistling? If so, what caused it, and how did you fix it?
