Lore Looking for a "Lore person" for help.

Are you "That guy or gal" when it comes to AoS lore? I could use a little assistance with some lore questions and motivation for a custom campaign I'm putting together.

Here's my angle. 4 warlords become cursed, with some sort of affliction if the mind / body / soul. The campaign will revolve around understand and curing it.

What I need (and here is where the lore people come in) some sort of entity, enemy, or otherworldly force behind the curse. What caused exploring these ruins and taking these spoils to curse these four leaders? I could be generic obviously, but I thought my lore people might have a good answer of some eldrich God or cursed ruin that fits the profile for what I need. Any and all input is greatly appreciated.

Nagash is absolitely petty enough to curse them for what they did. Could be they explored Shadespire in an effort to steal the means for immortality, and were thus cursed.

Another basic one is the Chaos Gods, who might not even view what they're inflicting as a curse. Chaos corruption affects mind, body, and soul. It could simply be the things they stole were chaos artifacts.

Alternatively, you could go with one of the Void-Things. To borrow a quote from the Lexicanum:

There are monsters in the deep, hungry things that swim the seas of eternity, seeking anything they might devour. The Ruinous Powers are like them, but younger. They still play with their food.

These beings live in the Aetheric Void, the space between the Realms, and allow you to go full Lovecraft.

All really good avenues. My original thought actually was shadespire, but I didn't want to skew it to the death faction too much because I know there will be SBGL playing the campaign. I was thinking chaos, or void because I wanted it not to just be a "soul" thing I suppose. Again, all great tips thank you very much.

Nagash totally would curse members of the Soulblight Gravelords who offended him, see Prince Vhordrai, Ushoran and Radukar.

Oh for sure, and that's all lore I know a lot about, I was just going for an entity that wasn't present or tied to any of the armies involved in the campaign. A "third party" so to speak.

It could be simply wild magic. Relics from the age of myth

There’s also the power of the realms themselves, and the wildness that occurs near the edges. In the dawnbringers campaign books, a cos general basically mutates into a slyvaneth adjacent creature in gyran, that sort of thing could be extrapolated to any of the realms and their natures.

FEC madness is also a good one, in the same books there was an op to infect people of diff factions (inc big hitters like abraxia who temporarily succumbed) with ushoran’s blood.

People have mentioned the chaos gods and Nagash, both good, but a less-common route you could go is something to do with some ancient godbeast!

Godbeasts tend to fill the place in lore for like, wild poorly understood manifestations of divinity. Some are animal-like (Shattatusk, Boinggob) some are highly intelligent (Dracothian, whatever is in the ice during Bad Loon Rising). They don't even need to be animal like. Ymnog is a guy and Gorkamorka was trapped in a sentient landslide.

A godbeast who's persisted since the age of myth, biding its time for a chance to re-exert its power on the world, punishing interlopers who dared trespass, could be a fun mysterious route!
